Excellent podcast. I enjoyed it very much. I mostly go for clearance in STGs but recently only going for score in Espgaluda II, mainly because of the insane visual reward when scoring high. Those massive numbers are so satisfying to see. Looking forward to the podcast on which I think is the absolute most important aspect of STGs.....the musical score!

Always appreciate having you here Sally and that's a fantastic idea! My buddy Jeff (and I think one other person) expressed interest in me doing a solo top-5 list of my fav STG tracks (this was some months back) and I think this holds a lot of room for facets not everyone will think about or even experience when it comes to OSTs and the potency they can hold. Stoked to hear you're digging into Espgaluda II, that's one I want to get back to eventually! Thanks for sharing and have a stellar week!

Indeed! Some of us won't even play certain games if the music doesnt work! Progear comes to mind haha as the pinata for "not good enough music". Stg music is actually something that will take some time for me personally to digest even though I've played probably hundreds of these games, the music spans from so many different styles and types and it's kind of all about the vibe that the dev is going for. of course I'd have to then talk about ZUN and haven't played it listened to enough Touhou music (not a big fan of the games here) - but it would be necessary to talk about STG music. My first Shmup that got me into the genre, Zero Ranger has a soundtrack I literally play in my car on trips and stuff, it's so good and I think it elevates the game significantly. It's a deep and fascinating topic, and being a musician since I was young, id have to throw some theory in there as well to do it justice!

I finally found some time to watch this Shmupcast, I really enjoy it! I had no idea you were so much into Ghost Blade before Dace, that's impressive ^^. Listening to your scoring experience on many Shmups is very interesting guys. I didn't know about milking in Musha as well 😁. Super Nano Blaster also split the scoring into different stages, I found this idea very cool so you can try hard on levels you like the most.

Hey Vinu! Glad you could check this out even though it's a long episode! I still really like Ghost Blade HD, I think it looks amazing (especially stage 3). I didn't notice that in Super Nano Blaster but I wasn't paying attention to my score at all haha. Trust you're ready for a stellar weekend and thanks again for stopping by - always appreciate you!

The ufo scoring system on space invader is; "A popular method of abusing this to gain 300 points from every saucer is to shoot 22 times, then shoot the saucer for the 23rd shot, and then shooting the saucer every 15th shot afterward (as that is the length of the loop)."

Hey SPM, glad you enjoyed it and no worries, it was on the longer side and it took over a month to get this out after recording (things have been swamped lately!) and certainly don't expect anyone to tackle the whole thing at once.

Cool video, really need to catch up on ur content!I really enjoy scoring most shmups but my favourites have to be yagawa shmups, batrider, garrega, ibara the medal chaining seems so simple but can be hard as hell also all the destructable scenery and scoring secrets and the rng also makes for a intresting play and keeps me going back time after time.i was playing ibara low rank trying for the 1cc but started scoring more and more for the extends,It just become more enjoyable playing for score!👊

Thanks for checking this out and no worries, I release quite a few videos so I never expect anyone to rip through them all! Batrider and Garrega are definitely ones I'd like to see on Switch but until then, I think Mame might be the only available option since I don't have anything else they'd be on.

Yagawa Shmups have craaaazy intense scoring! But also any Shmup they has tick points (shooting something rapidly not to kill it but to get score) will also have you milking and optimizing ad infinitum. Have you played NMK Shmups? Some of the weirdest scoring systems in those! Like bouncing your plane off of things in P46 Aces, shooting at the terrain in Zed Blade, or the aforementioned Gunnail where you suicide for points!

Hey Stacey! Thanks for asking! I’m not too sure at this point. Things trailed off a while ago due to severe internet connectivity issues on my end and our schedules not aligning. These days I’m exploring some solo, on-camera chats (the Coffee & Shmups episodes) which, while quite different, are probably the closest thing to the Shmupcast episodes. If you haven’t checked them out, feel free and let me know what you think. Thanks for expressing your interest and I trust you have a fantastic weekend!
