The Shining Loop Sudoku

Ойын-сауық

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
A debut on the channel (and what a debut!) for ElChiglia and their Shining Loop sudoku. This has SO many lovely logical ideas and yet can be solved relatively smoothly. Just wonderful.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Draw a single non-intersecting loop into the grid by connecting centres of orthogonally adjacent cells. The loop must fulfill the following rules: i) The loop enters every cage exactly once; ii) Within a cage, the loop only passes through cells of the same parity but, when the loop crosses cage borders, the parity of the loop switches; iii) Within each cage, the loop must pass through at least one moon or sun. Each symbol (Moon or Sun) stands for a different parity. Each cell containing that symbol must have the respective parity. Which symbol refers to which parity must be determined by the solver. Digits within cages cannot repeat and must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage (if given).

34:05 this conclusion could have been made using Box 7 at the very beginning; 5 digits are sunned, therefore sun = odd

Yeah. I think I had that after 2 minutes (colored all the moons and suns and started with the loop in that corner just like Simon, colored it, and then it was pretty obvious that the suns were odd). But I do not recommend forgetting the rule about the loop switches parity between boxes halfway through the solve :-D

The use of a second line color to indicate order of cage visits and not necessarily the exact path of the loop was an inspired and very clever notation choice I may need to borrow when solving region-visiting-loop type puzzles in the future!

I was shouting r3c3 = 5 in this solve for the longest time. Could have been the first digit on the grid. The 22 and 28 grids completely tile box 4, with r3c3 leftover. The secret that Simon and Mark only share with their closest friends says box 4 adds up to 45, so r3c3 = 22 + 28 - 45 = 5 Thank you for another great solve :-)

That has to be the most relatable thing for most of us. As soon as I saw that many cages I was like "alright time to look for 45s", shaded 2 regions to mean they sum up to 8, and got the 5. Instant. Then I proceeded to get COMPLETELY stuck. Made some guesses but eventually decided to check the video to see what I was missing. And of course Simon is doing the craziest logic while that five is still unaccounted for, for almost an hour. His mind is beautiful.

I found the 1\7 pair in box one through the secret. The 32 cage only left 13 and with the 5 in r3c3 and the parity being odd meant that 1\7 was the only option to total 13. This in turn led me to see the 9 in box 7, it was just a different path than Simon’s to get there.

It's interesting how the rules don't specifically state the core rule of the underlying pencil puzzle type; rather it arises (if pretty straightforwardly) by implication from the stated rules (if you're not familiar, in Sun and Moon rules the rule is just that the line must alternate which symbol it visits each region visit, which here arises from the combo of the line must alternate parity and symbols are linked to parities)

It's immediately apparent , because I saw a few comments, that @15:51 , there are 5 (five) cells on the loop through those "suns" in box7. Therfore; the "suns" are Odd. I think Simon's thinking too much about the "Country Roads" thing ( and whether a cage can be entered and exited more than two times) and missing that. Suns are Odd, though (I wonder if that would have changed Simon's solve ( he'd be able to employ the "bishop's move" on Even and Odd parts of the loop - I don't know how though ). Hmm..🤔 Gonna be fun, though. 😂☕️🎃🎃(

It also has to immediately exit the box I'm noticing. (No more "Odd" cells in "box7") I wonder if Simon sees that another way.? Hmm.. again. 😂

33:21, a crazy solve. I did make a mistake at one point, assuming ALL the unmarked cells in a cage had to be the opposite of the marked cells, but was able to solve from there after seeing where I was wrong. Even undoing all the odd and even pencil marks at the end was a bit of work.

It made determining the loop path a lot more straightforward too. Probably the single most significant reason why I, and many others, seem to have completed this one faster than Simon, which is rare for me.

Third puzzle in a row I solve in exactly the same time as Simon (within 2-3min of his solve time) 😊 enjoyed this one much more than yesterdays puzzle though, I really like when there’s something to draw or multiple rules/lines/restrictions. The knights move puzzle yesterday was a bit too one dimensional

Finished in 49:37. Thankfully I caught the parity in Box 7 pretty much right away. Unfortunately I somehow stuffed up somewhere between box 5 and box 8 and couldn't unpick it, so I had to start over about 15-20 minutes in (I kept the timer running, for a change!)

A fantastic puzzle - finished in 35 minutes, largely by not getting distracted and going down blind alleys, and realising quickly that the key was going to be finding a route path that alternates between sun cages and moon cages ... then noticing that there are 5 sun cells in box 7 which fixes the parity completely. An interesting point with this rule is that if the path hits two adjacent cells (and doesn't go to another cage in between), you can never prove that it doesn't go directly between them - there is nothing in the rules that could prevent it from closing there.

I started it myself and i just made moons blue and suns orange because although i didnt know what was odds or evens yet i had to start somewhere. I got as far as gia twenty minute market but with a few extra lines then he did because right side stuff . His using the cages values is what i suspected was next but i stopped and came back before i did anything else.

My time today was 29:05, solver number 902. Using the killer cage calculator built into Sven's software really helped to reduce the possibilities for those cages that had totals, rather than just trying to figure them out in my head.

28:39 for me. I used my head for the killer cages but I do have the "check pencilmarks" feature of the conflict checker turned on, which definitely gives me an unfair advantage against Simon, who does all that extra scanning (and explaining steps to viewers, or course).

How do you set a variant sudoku puzzle in sven's sudoku pad? I see them on the channel here but in the sudoku pad itself I can only enter in a classic style puzzle. I don't see a way to enter cages or little killers or anything like that. Is it even possible? or only for content creators?

This is one of those puzzles where it would be helpful to have a way to hide (but not delete) an input mode, once the grid is parity-shaded and the loop complete the loop is not needed for the Sudoku solve (any useful info it carries is retained in the parity shading) and would be nice to be able to turn pen tool off while solving the sudoku, then switch it back on to have the full solution...
