The semi-nomadic life of the Mokens | SLICE

Marc invites us on his special journey to Thailand, to discover the life of the Mokens, who freely explain their lifestyle.
The Mokens have lived along the coasts of Thailand and Myanmar for centuries. They spent their lives on their boat-homes, called kabang, sailing from island to island, subsisting on the fruits of the land, and those of the sea. The Mokens only lead a semi-nomadic life now, but whenever they can, they set off as a family on their boats, journeying for days or even weeks, perpetuating a traditional maritime way of life that has characterized their identity and culture.
Extract from the documentary: “People of the sea - Thailand, The Mokens, last of the nomads”
Direction: Nicos Argillet
Production: DÉCOUPAGES & ARTE France

I live in a big city, with a mortgage, car payments, and countless other debts. I sit in an office 8 hours a day and in traffic for another 3, sometimes 4. I know for a fact these people are living better lives than the one I have. They really seem to appreciate what they have as well. I'm happy for them.

That is because we adopted a capitalistic economic system that placed every human needs and necessity on the hands of profiteering motive or profits driven society.. and yeah, you need to exist for that purpose.. hmmmm .. but your dreams of freedom are happening.. With artificial intelligence, repetitive machines and robotic technologies are being free from capitalistic economic systems and capitalist personnel ambitions.. Our communism economic system is now being conducted gradually .. hmmmm.. when the means of production are no longer on the hands of control for profits but on the hands of the population of the world 🌎 itself .

"There's no land, no boat, you live in another world" The grandma statements left a profound impact on me, I can totally recall those exact emotions back when I lived at the South coast of Spain and swam at virgin beaches as a child. I would dive into the water, a marvellous, mysterious and peaceful world where time seemed to stop and deep tranquility would make you wish you would live forever in that state.

I am from Thailand...and appreciate that the Western reporter is actually trying to learn + experience first hand the local wisdom....actually different parts of Thailand have their local customs and wisdom about how to live sustainably...but when I was growing up...we Thais were bombarded by Westernization campaign...that often eclipsed ancient wisdom passed down from older generation....farmers who used buffaloes were pressured+lured to switch to tractors run by oil, herbal medicine pushed out by chemical drugs...etc. Now I realize that a country like mine, which for a long time referred to as backward or at best as Developing Nation...does indeed has many hidden gems... even our tradition of respect to elderly and gentle way we greet+treat+relate to one another...should be shared to the world...otherwise unchecked capitalism and globalist agenda could/might end up destroying the world while trying to control+exploit+colonize it !
