Harem is a place that has been very curious for centuries. It has not been possible to obtain much information about the harem because it smells very strongly. Therefore, a lot of information circulating among locals and foreigners has been produced. Unfortunately, most of this information is false. Let's explore the Harem together objectively and impartially.
I tried to capture as much detail as possible. That's why I recorded some places from more than one angle.
With a plan of Harem you can make your visit easier. Here is the plan of Harem for download:

@@IstanbulTheQueenofCities Yes most of the scenes were in other buildings but the room of the mother of the sultan in the series is an exact copy of the ceremony hall in this video, such as the Sultan's room, and many hallways in the Harem too. So I suppose they did acted in some of the real places

Visited the Palace its fantastic. The display of jewellery and gifts is absolutely amazing an absolute must visit if you go to Istanbul. A city full of amazing sites, the mosques are so beautiful. We visited the Blue Mosque its breathtaking. The Hagia Sofia unfortunately which was beautiful inside before the artwork was ruined when it got defaced as it was built as a Christian Cathedral when it was Constantinople so it obviously had biblical scenes on the walls. We had to purchase 2 tickets one for the Harem and one for the rest.

This is a good video. The harem is a really beautiful place. But only very few had a great life here. Those few lucky who managed to became valide sultanas. The others ..... As the sultans changed so changed the concubines. Read somewhere that in most of the cases the concubines were moved to make place for the concubines of the new sultan. But was cases when the concubines were throw in Bosporus. Also cases when only the pregnant ones ended in Bosporus. Very many tragic stories around this place.

For this reason, it is not possible to talk about separate bedrooms used today.

  • @IstanbulTheQueenofCities

Thank you very much. The first sultans stayed in the special room next to the Sacred Relics. Sultan Murad III let built a new privy room for hisself. Then the other sultans had their own rooms built. Cushions and mattresses were lined up during the day. At night, the cushions were lifted and the bed was laid. The Ottomans did not have a fixed bed like today. They were occasionally together with their spouses. * * * The eunuchs were serving in the Harem and Enderum in Topkapi Palace. Black eunuchs in Harem, white eunuchs in enderun. My guess: Men were not allowed in the Harem. Only black eunuchs could enter. In this way, it was also prevented for a man to enter by hiding in women's clothing.

I heard when they castrate men, they get really afraid and their testies shrunk in a very small size. Castration was done by 2 ways, one was crushing the testies. Because the testicles have shrunken into very small size during castration, sometimes they get healed over time. There were many incidents that concubines and eunuchs were having relationships with each other in the past, having black eunuchs would make it obvious that the baby would be half black. So that’s why they started having black eunuchs i think.

Well they didn't really apply the Islamic rules to sultans and princes unless they wanted to. They had their own portraits, did zinah with slaves, became monarchs (monarchy is not Islamic system), also practised fratricide law for about one and a half century. So they weren't really strict about Islam but more strict about traditions and cultural practices.
