The SECRET To CRUSHING Calling Stations

Ойын-сауық

So many people complain that their opponents never fold like it’s the worst thing in the world.
But here’s a secret for you:
These are the players you should be winning tons of $$$ off of at the table!
You just have to make a few key exploits that I teach you in this poker strategy video.
Remember that it is OK to lose small pots to calling stations because you will win much larger pots when you start to make stronger hands.
Find spots where you can get thin value and remember to go for maximum value against players that do not like to fold.
These two poker secrets will help you to start crushing calling stations the next time you sit at the poker tables, good luck!

    Ok 76hh, when playing balanced with no reads, I am continuing to bet 70% pot 100% of the time with my combo draw. But against a total station-seems to me we can exploit by checking back the turn and giving up if we miss the river saving $$, and when we hit-bomb it big for >pot size.

    So I played against a calling station over the weekend and lost a huge pot against them going for thin value. Playing 1/3 at MGM National Harbor. This calling station was running hot (at this point, the table figured him out and got all his money), he hit 2 high hands when someone else flipped a full house. He was at 1200 at a 500 max table. I was at 580. Calling station is UTG and I’m in the CO CO limps and 2 limp behind by local regs hoping to stack him. I have AJs and raise to 30 (my normal open is 15 plus the callers) station calls regs fold. Flop comes Jh7s5c. Station checks, I bet 45 and he calls. Turn. Is 8s. Station checks, and i bet 80. He calls . River is a 3c. I bet 200 and he calls. He turns over 53o for a rivered 2 pair. He gets triumphant and brags about how he “got me” I didn’t get frustrated and logged this play in my head. I stuck around 3 hours later then I wanted and chipped away at him. I ended up stacking him when he flipped 2 pair with J8o when I had KJs. The turn and river were both 10s and his 2 pair got counterfeit. He pushed all in and I called (it was a tough spot but I knew he could easily be over valuing a marginal hand and he kept saying he wanted all my chips). Perseverance and recognizing a leak and then exploiting it, turned a night that started stuck into a big winning night.

    @@joshjohnson1082 oh man, I know it can feel that way. I had a 6 week run bad where j couldn’t win a hand, every 2 of the river was the exact card the CS needed. I’m sure you know this, but what helps me is thinking about variance over the long term. If they had 6 outs, 88% of the time I will win that hand. I just have to keep playing well and Variance will come around my way. Also, I found that when that happens to me, it’s also sometimes my fault. Maybe I wan playing to wide, or I over played a hand, or I am playing to passive - or what ever. So I usually hit the books at Pokercoaching and go back to the preflop MasterClass and refresh lol. @@RB-jf5ww yeah running bad has its effect on you boy oh boy lol I folded the best hand the other day because I over thought things because I've been running soo bad. I had AA villain 1 raises to 25 guy to my right villian 2 calls I raise to 75. Call call. Flop is 762 with 2 clubs. Checks to me and I bet 85 villain 1 shoves for 280 villain 2 flats. I dont know what villain one has but he's been super tight so I figure he may have 2 pair a flush draw or trips to reraise so I anticipate a high chance that im beat by him so I go for the reraise to build a side pot because I put villain 2 on a big pocket pair 10s-QQs. I figured he would have reraised with KKs +. I make it 580 he has about 900 left and he snap calls. Turn is a Qd. He checks and I check because I put that in his range and we get a J on the river. Now I'm really concerned he's made a set. My luck has been soo bad lately that my mind is locked in to this guy having the nuts here. He bets around 300 for half his stack and I tank for a while and end up laying it down. I was so scared he made his hand that I literally discounted pot odds discounted my gut to just call. I couldn't get past yhe fact that he bet half his stack into me knowing he has to beat the other player who's all in and knowing I've been the aggressor the whole way. Like how could he be bluffing there. So I fold and he shows 54 suited for a missed open ender and villain one shows 99 for middle pair. I just couldn't believe I folded there but when I say I've been running sooooooo bad and getting out drawn on the turn and rivers lately its insane so it really influenced my decision making. Plus the runout just hit his range so well and he made a great ballsy bet and got me off the best hand. I've been dreaming of this hand for the past 5days lol

    I bet the turn for a normal 60% size. Most calling stations will only fold about 30% of their range here, but we have 14 outs to a nut hand and when we get there we want to get maximum value from a player who cannot fold top pair. We then check behind on the river when we miss.

    Hi Jonathan in the first hand, if we were up against a strong player this is an obligatory double barrel. We need to keep telling the story that we have AA, KK, AQ or 99. All of these hands will want to bet big here in the face of two flush draws. I actually like even a slight overbet to fold out some ace and king high fds that we are losing to. Against a calling station tho.... mayb it is best to take the free card. Our hand has zero showdown value so if we check back and they lead out river its not the worst thing in the world to just fold, at least we got to see all 5 cards.

    In the first hand you can actually bluff river for a small sizing. A station will never fold a pair but he'll fold all his missed draws which have better high card value than your hand. You don't want to check back 7 high and lose to J8 for J high :)

    Only better players are capable of this. The calling station is very loose but also a passive player. They just call down to get to showdown, rarely taking aggressive action. You also need to actually think on next level to realise your opponent's range and understand your hand isn't probably good. And based on that have the guts to turn some marginal made hand into a x/r bluff.

    I don’t agree with checking turn on that first hand. If he’s a station why not bet 1/3 pot with the implied odds of the double up if we hit our hand. Obv. Give up on river if we miss but he’s snapping off if we hit river and overbet pot.

  • @iamamish

    @iamamish

    I came around to this same way of thinking. Given that we're going to hit a straight or flush about 34% of the time, the river overbet is going to compensate for when we bet turn, but have to give up on the river, due to missing our draw.

  • @qazzaqstan

    @qazzaqstan

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@iamamish My issue with this is that even calling stations won't necessarily call an over pot sized bet when the most obvious draw gets there. This can be especially true when the pot gets larger. However, if your specific opponent will always call at least a pot sized bet on the river given they call the turn then sure it is weirdly still +EV here since you have 27% equity and are getting 3+x your turn bet every time you make your hand. You also need to account for a small percentage of the time they are on a higher flush draw so you need to be even more sure that you can make up huge amounts of value on the river against 95% of their range . I still find it important not to over-correct against bad players though because them having the tendency to make really bad plays does not mean they will always do so.

    @@qazzaqstan very well said. I agree across the board. The real question is, “what do we mean by ‘calling station’?”

  • @qazzaqstan

    @qazzaqstan

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@iamamish Definitely because there is a huge range in that. For some it just means their calling range is extremely inelastic they might always defend top pair or better no matter what the board looks like and basically always fold bad second pair- regardless of the board or your story making a lick of sense. There you should often bluff exploitatively small on boards they probably missed (like 2 or 3 streets at 25%-30% pot) but bet huge for value if you think they hit. They are also the perfect players to use your suggestion against because they will both pay you off way too much on the river while still over folding. Whereas thin value bets might just torch money against them. It is rare to find players quite this bad though (at least in my limited experience). Honestly though across the board my number 1 exploit no matter which type of calling station would be try to play as many hands with them as possible, mainly limited by what the rest of the table will let you get away with pre-flop. You don't need to be heads up, just need to be willing to get out of the way if one of the players probably has you beat. If you take it 4 ways, win a small-medium pot 10% of the time win a huge pot 10% of the time, and bleed 80% of the time you almost definitely end up way ahead.

    I play against a calling station regularly. The guy's vpip is 80plus. So I find myself with AQ, and I raise fairly large. Flop: AQ7 rainbow. I continuation bet a full pot, and station calls. A 9 peels on the turn, and as this card neither makes or completes any (board) draws - I figure it's time to shove. In other words, I'm going for max value per your advice. He calls, and I'm stacked because he turned a set of 9's. Now maybe you'll say I shouldn't have shoved...but if I just bet pot, I know he's raising. You tell me you'd fold here Jonathan? Just wondering.

  • @FCarraro1

    @FCarraro1

    2 жыл бұрын

    no way I would have folded. If you have a strong but not nutted hand and the board is scary and you fear that opponent can bet or raise but you know you are going to call anyway, a good rule of thumb in my opinion is to put it in ourselves. For instance, a couple days ago I had 2nd best set in a 3-flush board (last club got there at the river) and I had the feeling he was chasing a flush, and the SPR was low, something like 0.7. I checked river oop, hoping that he checked back, but he went all in and I called, and he showed 6 high flush. Maybe I am wrong but I think that if I had shoved myself, he may have thought that I had rivered a better flush and folded the 6 high. Unlikely but possible. Plus, and more importantly, I missed value on a lot of calling ange like bottom set and 2P. so, I think your play was correct and you were unlucky ;)

  • @iamamish
    @iamamish2 жыл бұрын

    My take - we do NOT want to bloat the pot as we have less than 50% equity here, and we have 0 fold equity. We wouldn't want to bloat the pot in a case where we have less than 50% pot equity, as long as we assume our opponent is NEVER folding. We can get to showdown cheaply - if we do not improve our hand, it is an easy check fold. Wait for the river - if we get there (a heart, or an 8) then we can punish our opponent with a very large bet. How large? It depends on the extent to which our opponent is a calling station. It also depends on whether our opponent ever slow plays a good hand (like A/K of hearts).

  • @iamamish

    @iamamish

    2 жыл бұрын

    Actually bloating the pot might be OK here, depending on our implied odds when we make our hand. If our opponent will truly call down any bet amount, on any board texture, then you want to drive the pot size larger, setting up a big river shove. Most of the time you won't get there, but the shove will more than compensate us for our losses when we do get there.
