They have tenure and seniority. They have produced work that matters (there or with other companies). They are charismatic and good communicators and can make difficult topics seem easy. They are personable and can strike up (and maintain) a conversation with anyone and often let others lead the conversation. They have show initiative and aren't afraid to promote change and innovation etc rather than using the same old approach as before. They see the good in others (often before others see it in themselves) and have a reputation that took a long time to cultivate. They are fair and firm. Just my thoughts opinions and experience. Have a good day reader

This example is a great reinforcement that engaging positively at work builds immunity from attack (no one is going after this person successfully).

@@JenniferBrick personally I want to be around successful positive upbeat optimistic people. I pay little attention to those lifers who have shown little to no advancement in the company. But it takes all sorts to make the world go round. Have a good day

Sometimes being the outlier can cause envy

100%. Most people want to be the outlier, even if they aren't ambitious the outlier is recognized, rewarded, and most importantly validated. 95% of people rely on external validation.

I think it's jealousy from the others. Also you need to be different and the outlier (often) to succeed.

I think looks matter A LOT. If you are not thin and "normal" looking, you will be ignored no matter how much "confidence" you have.

I agree, plus personality, unless you have high-level seniority then it doesn't matter.

I second this. This is helpful, especially when you work from home. On the occasion when I need to be at the office and see other teams within the department, I now focus on presentation. I’ve always made myself presentable but it was very subdued. I experimented and really enhanced more physically and I received more attention and people were more receptive to me and my requests. It’s an added bonus with networking and established rapport. I’ve seen this on as chair on the board for a non profit. Even the experienced ladies who were well dressed with great bodies were well respected. I think to men, it represents confidence, power and control for a woman.

This is unbearably true. My first ever job was an apprenticeship at a solicitor’s firm where I was bullied, I was in the paralegal section and we were all the youngest in the company (two apprentices, me who was 18, and the other apprentice I think was 17 or 18), and my colleagues were around 19-25, except from our line manager who was in her late forties. The hunky straight guy around 22-23 years old was adored by the younger women in my team, but I was just mercilessly bullied because I didn’t fit into their neat little box. It’s quite unfair how looks often means power, and the less attractive or fortunate people have to work 100x harder in life to be seen it feels. I don’t consider myself to be unattractive, but I’m very vulnerable and I have learning disabilities which makes life very hard and stressful for me. I quickly learnt after being fired from that placement, that fast-paced working environments are not good for me. The working world has been extremely difficult as most jobs I’ve ever seen have been advertised as “this candidate must be able to enjoy and excel in fast-paced, demanding environments and enjoy working to deadlines”. I’ve tried so hard over the years to get medical receptionist jobs as that seems to be the most relaxing job I can think of, but I’ve been denied every single time. It’s absolutely hopeless. I’m currently in a charity fundraising job with extremely stressful weekly targets but at least it’s work from home.. my only small mercy from the heavens above… I’ve done so many jobs and most of them have been customer service roles. If I could be in a quiet room alone or somewhere I don’t have to work with anyone else I’d be so happy. I’ve contemplated working for myself for a long time now, I’ve heard about those Amazon jobs where you find a product to sell but I don’t know if it’s really for me. I just hate working with other people, most people are fake and obnoxious and I’m so done with everyone.

One of the biggest career risks is changes in direct managers; they're a wild card and can be awesome or awful or in between. Do you have contact with your boss's boss? Being in their radar will make your new boss irrelevant (just know that doing this can cause them to lash out because that the precise opposite of what they want, so proceed with caution!).

@@JenniferBrickThis is exactly what happened to me. My new boss didn’t like that I had a good relationship with their boss and made my work environment incredibly toxic. They called a meeting with their boss and said that I was disobeying (exactly her word) her and I shouldn’t be having conversations with other staff without her. I called HR into the meeting because I felt so uncomfortable. I truly believe that my boss was trying to get me fired because she didn’t like that I had a positive reputation at work and she started picking on every single thing she didn’t like about me. I ended up quitting a few days later. It was traumatic.

@@brandonhealy7158 It’s sad that this seems to be so common. I hope that it gets better for you and that you’re able to leave this situation soon. It really was painful. This just happened in September to me, so it still feels fresh. I’m feeling better now and I’m so glad that I left. The whole organization was a mess, but the situation with my boss made it 10x worse. I recently found a new job that pays a little bit less, but I already know that this is going to be a much better experience. I also know how to properly navigate a toxic work situation and I’m no longer afraid to speak up and/or quit, if needed. This experience taught me that I will be ok (if not better) and I don’t need to stay in a toxic work environment just for the money. Always put money in your emergency fund every month. Financially, that’s what made feel like I was going to be ok for at least a few months while I looked for a new job.
