Fascinating. Finding courage when you have no choice is one thing, but choosing to put yourself in this awful position when you're safe and don't have to, is something else altogether. These were extraordinary people. In 1993, I had the honour of meeting an old French hunter in a Pyrenees village on the border of Spain. As we ate an amazing stew his wife had made for us from a wild boar he'd killed, he told us stories about smuggling Jews and downed airmen across the Pyrenees into Spain in World War 2. I'd never heard any more about it until now. Thank you.

My great uncle was an American pilot. He bailed out over France. He was kept safe at a farmers home. With help he was able to make his way back to England. On the 20 th anniversary of his escape he and his wife meet the the French couple in NY city to celebrate.

It humbles me and inspires me to see documentaries like this. To see what the everyday people in hellish situations did to save the life of 1 jew, 1 American, 1 RAF or BEF soldier is astounding. That these very young girls and women were creating and maintaining the freedom lines is a feat in and of itself but to do it in the face of instant death if caught is extraordinary. Then you people like Corrie Ten Boom and others that risked everything to save humanity and dont get the attention they deserve for doing what they did. When you save one life, you save the world and these women and girls did exactly that. They saved the world and they deserve every single flower they get for doing so. Thank you for showing these incredibly brave women and girls and highlighting what they did to save humanity.

Great story and what great people. It's good to hear their stories. So many more people played a big part in the war, and we rarely hear about them.

I just finished reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, about a woman who worked for the Comete line & her sister in occupied France. Great book. Thank you for sharing these stories, they really do embody humanity at it's best.

For family reasons I've chased after evaders & helpers through correspondence, meetings, archives, etc, for over 40 years. Know them all well including the good folks celebrated here. The most fascinating stories are the captured 'also rans', their helpers, betrayers and the German security forces hunting for them. No where else can you find the level of drama than the ones who saw the war from all sides as tourists in occupied Europe. It was a privilege to be able to follow this avocation. Urge others to do the same and discover what human nature of all sides is truly like under real stress

If these are Light Times, how to teach people good value as these Brave folks practiced ? Rest with Jesus on Sunday, face tyranny locally or far, and don't be afraid to speak for rights of your neighbor if she/he is financially threatened through high taxation

Too many people demean these stories saying "I'd definitely help people escape!". No you wouldn't have. Chances are you would have gone along with a lot of it too. Even if just out of fear.

I'd like to add in quote from Tolkien, “It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.” It explains how I feel about these heros and it explains something about them too, "Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.”

Breaks my heart hearing Stanley Hope's words at the end, I can't imagine the guilt he must feel. Though it puts me in mind of a passage from the Quran, Surah 5 verse 32: 'If anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all mankind.'
