Remember to look at your map when you have any fraction of a second to do so, especially after you finish inking an area around you. This can help you spot enemies you don't have a line of sight to, and notice unclaimed areas you might not have seen. Also (maybe common knowledge, but) you can always super jump back to base using X, dpad-down, A. Great if you've pushed past mid and someone snuck by your team. Also, if you're cornered and outnumbered (but can spare 1 second to prep the jump), this at least avoids losing special charge and waiting to respawn.

Really great vid and I have a few notes 1. The reason people don’t paint every inch of the base at the start is because it can put you at a disadvantage securing mid. Usually I head to mid first and paint after I die the first time. If you never die, you probably are beating them so badly you don’t need to paint your base. 2. Like Hazmy says, don’t aim down. Most weapons paint your feet anyways. 3. If you don’t have middle coverage don’t sneak forward into their base. Take mid before you push. If you go behind them, you often are stuck away from your team between the entire enemy team, and they will paint it immediately, meaning you wasted valuable time. Also don’t push at the beginning. Push at the end. 4. In the last thirty seconds, your focus should shift almost completely to painting, unless you are not a good painting weapon. Also, don’t paint somewhere the other team is just painting over. Find somewhere they aren’t paying attention to and get some sneaky points. Hope that helps someone 😀

  • @Tanrotuk

Great tips, Thank you!! The only time I try to sneak into their base is when they are holding us at mid, or close to our base and splatting us over and over 😫...sometimes that's been the only way to salvage our game. They usually let go of mid to chase me down, or they dont see me and I paint the heck outa their side to their surprise in the end lol

I do really agree with you, I've lost many matches in which my team couldn't push back because there wasn't that much to paint left to charge specials, without getting in some dangerous spots. Just remember that if people stay behind to paint, you might lose mid from the start and gives them a chance to spawn camp. If you have no specials, this is very annoying to get through imo.

One of the reasons why everyone is always arguing over painting base vs leaving it for when you die is because of how situational everything in each game is. Maybe going over specific situations that are game changing decision making moments can help everyone gain a bigger picture of where they should position and when and why. Any strategy is a valid strategy as long as the case suits the strategy, the problem is when everyone sticks to their way and only their way. Also I love the video Hazmy! Turf war isn’t typically covered in this amount of depth so this type of content is refreshing and I’d love it if you were to make more :D

  • @HDHaZmY

I personally think the reason everyone's arguing about what to do in Turf War is because there is just no content for it at all. It's a game mode that's not respected and left behind in the western scene so instead it's just urban legends and hot takes that float around instead of proper analysis like Ranked Modes.

Thank you! I personally like conversations about Turf War and I think the mode NEEDS it - but usually the criticism is just trying to shut down what I say. It's sadi because the difference between Western and Japanese Turf War is so big, they love it there - and over there it would never be questioned that you actually have to paint your base precisely and then focus on the middle. Turf War deserves more open-ended discussions because right now there's too many dogmas that just must not be questioned over here.

Thank you for this video, it was really good to hear you vindicate and explain the impotrance of base inking and then lay out the good practices of next two stages! Your narrative tends to focus on more optimistic turn of events, though - it would be very nice to go through stages, making good impact on each one, but it seems that a lot of people in the community, myself included, tend to be frustrated with a different type of situation. In casual matches it happens that you and your team only get your collective wits, coherence and bearings from under the metaphorical ink blotter towards the middle of the match and have to try and fight back for the middle, already from disadvantage. Lacking voice comms, individual descisions and tactical awareness of each team member in a state of crisis becomes paramount. I often find that choosing an attainable combat objective and sticking to it has a chance to give you that little edge to turn the game. I would really appreciate an in-depth video on crisis manageamement in typical less than optimal situations. Thanks!

This was a great video! I think a better way to explain the idea for the last 30 seconds is in terms of numbers advantage. The reason it's so important to charge your special and take your opponents at the end of the game is because if you only spend those last seconds focused on painting and your opponents are still alive, any new paint you add is only being undone by your opponents. Instead, if you take a couple of them out first, it gives your team a chance to build a lead. This is true for the entire turf war, but more important at the end when the decision gets called.

I don’t think those places matter nearly as much as mid or the enemy’s ink. They don’t give you an important tactical position, they don’t take points away from the enemy, and they are so small that it doesn’t really make all that much of a difference. If you lose a turf war by .01% without one of those places painted, you probably still would lose as you would have to give up time you could’ve spent somewhere more important in order to paint an area that’s worth 10 points. And if you disagree and still think those spots take priority, you can always just paint them yourself.

I usually take the role of home base turf painter but my strategy is a little bit of a mix of the two at the start. I like to focus on painting homebase until my special is charged then go straight to backing up the team at mid. After my first death I'll make sure the rest of home base is painted.

  • @SuspiciousTemmie
    @SuspiciousTemmie Жыл бұрын

Edit: What this comment says has flaws as well, it's really best to do a mix of these strategies. I went too far with most of these points, I apologize for that. Everybody, please stop just painting _all_ your home turf at the beginning of the game, it just lets the other team get control of mid... You should paint all of it eventually, yes, but if you actually look at most competitive turf war tournaments, the base gets painted *_AFTER THE TEAM GETS CONTROL OF MID._* And if you can break away and paint the enemy base in the last 30 seconds, that is actually the best time to do it. They will either not have time to go back and paint it, *letting your team get more points,* or they will actually go back and paint it, which lets your team get control of mid. *Letting your team get more points.* This works especially well if you have a weapon that already wants to get behind the enemy team and annoy them anyway, like an Inkbrush or a Sploosh. So, like Hazmy said, try out different strategies to see which ones actually work instead of just taking to heart anything a popular Splatoon player says. Especially when they're more familiar with PvP or Salmon Run and not what the video is actually talking about.

  • @HDHaZmY

@@HDHaZmY Yeah, you're probably right about that part. I'm much more Ranked-focused. I will admit I went too far with most of these points (especially that last part, I apologize if I offended you with that), it's really best to do a mix of what we're suggesting. The extremes we're both suggesting won't always be the best strategy. They both have valid points, but it would really be best to do each one at different times or a mix of the two depending on a lot of other variables that come up in solo queue. So don't always take what a popular Splatoon player says to heart, but don't take what a random KZread commenter says to heart either.

In my opinion having one person to stay back is a disadvantage. Say the other team is doing the same. You're in a 3v3 in the middle. That's about 50/50 if the other team is coordinated enough, and you're bound to make a mistake in solo and lose momentum, adding another to fight with you will help aid gaining map control, then when your fighters die, as mentioned, they should paint back up and return to the fight during downtime.

It depends entirely on how the team plays, painting your base first is standard competitive Turf War tactics. You obviously have to play more defensively and hold your side of the base until the team re-groups. With that said solo q is random and a single player can do a wipeout or vice versa - so it's almost impossible to predict an early middle engagement. Good teams should have their base painted in first minute anyway, you don't lose out on multiple specials at all.

I am much more of a fan of charging the middle. Then paint the base after getting splatted. This puts more pressure on the middle to help secure it. It helps you build up special to re-pressure the middle when you return even if you don't do the whole base on the way. In the worst case scenario where your team is wiped out you can now all bring specials back more likely than not to help capture mid.

I'm the base-painter person. 🥺🤚✨ Depending on the map layout I paint it completely at the beginning or one half first and the other half after I died. When I don't die I often look at the map to see if some places missing paint or not. Also I sometimes go back for the not painted spots but that depends on how difficult the other team is and if I'm needed to defend the middle and beyond. Also: when everyone from the team is painting the base directly at the beginning you're all so much faster in the middle again as a full team and not just 3 vs 4. And it often just took just some seconds to paint the base, if everyone is doing it.

The problem with Turf War is that there is no communication, the game sucks when you are playing with n00bs and are often carrying the team. Like you are taking on an entire team and winning at the enemy base while the rest of your team isn't contributing to anything.

Yea, I'll change the way I think about this. I'll go do them right now. I do think it should be said but... keep an eye on your map. Open it with X, see where your opponents are inking, what abilities they have so you aren't caught off guard from someone ninja squidding in your face. Moreover, keep an eye on both your allies and your enemies, as you could be without support and just get splatted because you had to fight a 4v1. Why? Eh, sometimes, you just get a bunch of base painters. And that's no good.

The vertical flingza flings have some of the best painting in the game, and rolling to paint with a roller is some of the worst painting in the game. I don’t think you should ever focus on painting every inch of an area that already has a sufficient amount of ink, because it’s always better to paint a large amount with every shit, especially with a slow weapon like flingza. For close range, vertical flicks could still work, as they can one shot, but horizontal flicks are better if you’re in the open and the enemy is shooting at you. Pro tip: do not roll unless you are already on top of them.

If I can’t provide that tentamissle support early while inking base we will lose because tentamissles makes the battle in mid more like at 3.5 v 3 and without that reeflux isn’t strong enough to beat most shooters in a 1v1 making it more like a 3.5 v 4 later

Inking base is important, but never do it on last minutes. Cuz the last 30sec u should be helping ur teammates controlling/retake the mid. Losing 1 teammates makes ur team into 3v4 situation and it easier for ur teammates get splatted and losing control over mid. Only the teammate with good painting weapon are encouraged to ink base, Reeflux, Splash, Jr and etc, Charger are also viable since it paints neatly. But if your weapon SP are beneficial for assisting frontline (Wavebreaker, Crabtank, Bubbler etc), u should stop painting base midway and assist the front cuz u dont wanna waste ur SP.

I hate having the base painted first thing, because it puts you at a HUGE disadvantage if your team gets wiped or even just loses 2 players. If the base is already inked, you have no way to charge your specials as you head back into mid or wherever the fight is happening. Basically you have to swim right back into mid and try to charge your special while also trying to keep the opposing team at bay. Not to mention that you leave your team at a disadvantage if one person stays behind while the others try to take mid. I’ll usually try to get to mid first and loosely paint around me on my way there in the beginning. If you get the opposing team locked out, somebody can always go back, or you can just paint more and more if you have to respawn at some point.

Thank you. I thought I was the only one who could see the problem with what he was talking about. Having your base painted doesn’t mean anything if the opposing team has now locked down mid. Even in the example he provided (3:36) the team that didn’t paint their base as effectively still covered the majority of the map. In other words they still won where the other team had a neatly painted base but lost. I found it a little odd that the percentages weren’t shown in that example.

The classic base-painting debate! What you said here is critical on one end, but it's also important to recognize that you could be putting your team at a disadvantage if they go to mid 3 vs 4 without you. It's completely situational, though. Some kinds of weapons in the right players' hands can pick off opponents quick from afar and can hold their own without you. If you're with randos, watch their weapon makeup and behavior. If your team is coordinated, just communicate expectations (ie. "Please hit 'This Way!' if you need me to join the mid fight.").

I have to disagree on your first point. Yes, each point of inking corners will help your team. But painting in the middle will help your team *wwaaaayyyy* more. One attack that fills in a corner for an additional 3 points is a waste of time compared to a shot in a more open space that can get maybe 15 points and at the same time take away 15 points from the enemy team for a total 30 point change in your teams favor. It’s simply a much better use of time.

It's a common misconception but as I said at the beginning of the video - Turf War is not about who painted for more points, but about who has more turf in the final second. You can always paint the middle after 30 seconds of securing your base - but your base points will never be painted over.

Painting every corner of base at start (even if it’s one person) wastes so much time. If all team members are at mid and taking control, you have a much better chance.

On the recent splatfest, I found myself a part of a dominant team in the open solo turf war and we picked up some really long win streaks - the unspoken tactic each time was for all four players to quickly paint as much as possible of all home/mid areas while working towards the final third (the opponents turf) and then unleashing a guarded war on their base and not let them get past. This obviously involves quick teleportation back there if you get taken out. On a weak team, this tactic absolutely obliterates them with some big wins.

I'm sorry, but the primary advice in this video is not really correct on several points. There is no universal best strategy for solo queue turf war, but having someone paint the entire base leaves your team without turf to paint in the middle of the game, which means your team has no resources to control mid in the midgame. It increases the chance of being locked out and spawn camped, since it removes the ability to charge special before going out. You also shouldn't shoot slightly up for every weapon. You need to strafe in a fan pattern while aiming up and down. Some weapons also don't paint more this way.

  • @HDHaZmY

@@HDHaZmY well I was trying to be polite rather than just call your strategy bad advice. It is true that this is just an opinion, but this is shared opinion by many analysts and people with competitive experience actually playing in tournaments. Even in a solo environment it is much more important to have as many players as possible sticking to the 'paint as you go out to charge special' because controlling mid is much more important than any minor points you miss along the way painting thoroughly. At any level, special economy is the most important aspect of the game, and painting the base at the start ruins your special economy. You can watch Squid School's video on this subject for a much more detailed view on this metagame analysis.

Keeping an open mind to alternate strategies is pretty important too to keep the scene healthy.

@@HDHaZmY I'm not going to belabor the point, you're free to your own opinion and it's your channel. The reason it works in top level play is simply because they are good enough to have preplanned that strategy, and are good enough to stall out enemy teams in a disadvantage state because they have specifically organized their team to function in this way. It is not representative of an environment where you cannot choose your partners and have no way to communicate intentions If I may make a salmon run comparison, your strategy is similar to rushing the shore to kill bosses that can be lured. There certainly can be situations in which rushing is necessary and better, but by and large you want to lure things to the basket, yes? So if squid school or someone else who doesn't play salmon run made a video that said that the best way to win salmon run is to kill scrappers at the shore, you would say that is generally bad advice, even if they watched a video of japanese salmon run players shore rushing. Again, not looking to get into it any further, but just hoping you'll reconsider your point.
