The Secret Life of Your Ears

In January of 2019 my right ear become completely blocked, to the point where I could no longer hear normally or carry out my professional duties as a sound engineer. This is the story of how that condition was resolved, as well as some lessons on ear health for all sound engineers.

    Remarkable how similar our ears function to a common speaker, cone/ear drum, driver solenoid/ear bones, box ports/eustachian tube, speaker cable/nerve endings. To be specific it's more similar to a microphone, but microphones are principally the same as speakers anyway. I had a eustachian tube blockage recently which encouraged me to learn about the ear, very fascinating stuff.

    Absolutely! Beyond that, our ears actually have EQ, compression and *physical* limiting built in to protect us from loud transients. It's quite amazing and well worth studying. Makes you even more aware of how important it is to protect your ears on a day to day basis.

    Well, that was absolutely fascinating Bruno - and very important information for all of us. Especially interesting was our ability to turn up the treble content of our hearing. As we know, as we age the top end of our hearing starts to diminish. But it would seem we might be able to turn up our treble to help compensate. Good news for people like me who are older now (I am 70 years of age). I'm very glad you got it all sorted. Best wishes.

  • @GLBProductions

    @GLBProductions

    Thanks for the comment Alan :) It IS very interesting how our brain can compensate for variations in our physical hearing! It was interesting that the 'treble boost' went away pretty rapidly - within a few hours, and my hearing was then back to normal on both sides. I'm not sure how this interacts with the effects of ageing, as that is a long term, permanent high frequency loss - I'm sure it would be a fascinating topic to research! Glad you're not letting age slow you down!

    I’ve always followed this advice: The only thing you should ever stick in your ear is your elbow. Fantastic video, very informative. I once had a buildup, but there was no pain at all. I just noticed the difference in my hearing. I then had my hearing checked and discovered that although I m in my forties, I have perfect hearing eleven though I played in a rock band for 7 years! Thanks to genetics, apparently. I now am careful to periodically clean my ears with a wash..

    Hi Bruno! Here's explained your missing for so long! Welcome back ;) I had similar issues but not so severe, because my ears were completely blocked by the earwax, but on the outer side so it was visible to the doctors...then they washed me with hot water and some kind of liquid into a giant syringe pump. They were surprised of how much earwax was coming out! During the condition I felt like I lived underwater... All sounded far away and weak even from close distance. But in my case the problem was the water...because water inflates earwax making it bigger time after time. Since I wash my hair every day that seemed a logical conclusion to me. Cheers :)

    Thanks Cris, I've also picked up some teaching at a local arts college from the beginning of this year so have even less time to do videos ;) There are apparently some people who are more prone to earwax blockage than others - if you have the sticky/greasy type of earwax then you should drop by the ENT every six months or so, or whenever a blockage occurs.

    A good video for a lot of people, not just sound engineers and rock musicians. Did your doctor say that any component of your ear problems were exacerbated by working in a loud environment?

  • @GLBProductions

    We did discuss the possibility that wearing earplugs a lot might have contributed to the compaction of the ear wax, however the compacted wax was very far inside the ear canal - much further than any earplug would ever reach. So in the end it was probably those cotton buds...

    Hey Bruno. i bought a used Peavey sound system about a year ago. It came from someone who's wife used to sing for our Lord. It is mounted i'n cabinet has 1 amp for the monitor speaker cabinet 1500 watts. 2nd for 3000 watts used for the mic's and stereo set up. 2 equilizers. 1 sound effects for mic's. set up for wireless mic's. 1 8 channel mixer. the person had it set up to show it works. the plan i had was to break it down for other purpose. None of the chords are hooked up. Is there any chance to somehow help me. the cost ?. either way. tell me how to get a hold of you. i know nothing regarding facebook. your google isn't set up. if there's a way for me to contact you please let me know. i'll seach for this in this video. i live in Sanford, NC. i might be able to travel?

    Ah yes they call that syringing or sluicing - that is the first step in cleaning your ears and can be done by a general practitioner. It generally works unless the ear wax has become compacted, like in my case!

  • @GLBProductions

    If you are daisy-chaining the amplifiers together, ie driverack -> amplifier 1 input -> amplifier 1 line level output -> amplifier 2 input, there is no practical limit to how many amps you can connect, as each connection is buffered by the input of the amplifier in question.
