We hand file our chains square and HEXA, I couldn’t imagine hand filing all the chains you guys go through. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that brand before. I knew a guy who had a few Oregon automatic grinders in his garage. Those worked well but weren’t nearly as compact as the one you have. WCS has a raker gauge that you might be able to use with the chain still on the machine. Just a thought, not sure if you have tried it or not or know about it. 👍🏻 Or 500i usually has a 36” .404 full skip full chisel on it with an 8 pin. It’s the perfect setup for the conditions we’re in. The saw is incredible for the weight and size. We bought it two years ago and I might have a full tank run through it, I don’t know how many barrels my son has through it 😆. That thing is thirsty and it’s about the only one he uses, especially with .404 chain.

I volunteer with a group that goes around the US cleaning up tree debris after weather events, and also the shmuck they convinced to sharpen the chains. 😂 Just using 2 of the oregon bench grinders...I may try to convince them to get one of these. Not happening, but a guy can dream.

The concern from the short is how much material this appears to take off, but it looks like it was set to take some extra for dramatic effect and is a bit more subtle here. The question is, how many cycles of sharpening will a chain last using this device?

Thx from Sweden! For a good demonstration of automatic chain sharpening and its value in terms of costs (time, money) but above all that each chain is of the very best quality, not because I "distrust" that you and your workmates (pro's) cannot by hand get very best quality. Also good at the end of the clip a simple demo. of the result. A thumbs up for you; a good presenter results in 100% participation as a listener and "waiting out the commercials" is not even disturbing.. Well conveyed by pro. info. as a pro. to us listeners!

I am just a hand sharpening bottom feeder. My saws must know that because they like to find metal just so i can work harder.

  • @daemn42

So by my rough math with a median hourly arborist rate of $30/hr and sharpening 30 chains per week. Done by hand that's one every 10 minutes or 6 an hour, for 5 hours.. thus $150 worth of your time.. or about 33 weeks to pay for itself. Not counting the time this machine takes, because you can be doing something else most of that time. The X factor is whether this eats chains faster than you would sharpening by hand.

Have used a regular Oregon grinder for a couple of years now. You can set up a grinder to barely take material off same as filing. But then again in those cases you can touch up a chain with one or two swipes on the job. So I'd say a grinder eats a chain about 10% faster. Worth it when you consider the time saved.

the difference is tho your chain will always be top notch edged where hand filing sometimes throws your edges off unevenly

Shit how busy do you have to be to just be swapping out a dull chain. I used to run my saw 10 hours a day and only use 35 to 40min maintaining it throughout the day which was normally a good time for a break. Your reason sounds pretty flimsy i used to smoke the the fools who sharpened with these things when it came to productivity cos my saw cut so much faster.
