The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary Speedrun B. Ginner in

Ойындар

What the ....? ; )
Well, I finally managed to hack back at the game that kinda scared me when I was younger. Supposedly a puzzle game for ages 8+. Ha! Really?
This whole mischevious Dr. Quandary and the very spooky B&W carnival (entrance), the doll that would open its eyes, eerily smile and then swallow you, all the mind games that Q would trick us into (especially his taunts), the cave maze that sometimes had unnerving sounds in it, the strange pterodactyl and the hall of lasers... that game had enough menagerie to scare some late teenagers, perhaps even grown-ups, not to mention smaller kids.
Also, some of the puzzles aren't that easy or intuitive.
Well, no more of this shit : D I got back at it and with a pretty good style, too. I had some results as of now and slowly am getting better at it, so could follow this with a better time perhaps, especially the so-called ideal time (at least, the projected one) is sitting just above 5 minutes (and fearless prediction that's even less, about 21 seconds). My sum of best segments (counted from all the runs) is 5:42,5 now, but I know it can be done better.
Tho this time is nothing bad : ) So why not post it.
One big error on my side is the bridgekeeper's puzzle, I had to repeat it and as such, lost about 17+ seconds. Three puzzles (namely the monkey/ape, lasers/fire&acid and prisoner) take away quite some time compared to their best segments, the rest is not that bad (maybe apart from constructing the door, which could be better), tho catapult is awful as ever, I hate this fragment. On the other hand, there are also some best fragments I made so far, namely constructing the ship, the tower(s) of Hanoi and notes jumping (slight difference, still the best time) and taking care of the pot ; )
This game is quite RNG-heavy at many moments, so I'll debate if to follow or not ; ), but I think it's more than doable to upgrade eventually, so.. why not?

Definitely grind it a bit, maybe do O D Nary as well. Also, damn you beat me by a lot.

Transitions are easy to skip, for the intro holding Escape does the trick (and spacebar/left click for shooting and skipping dialogues). Unfortunately haven't been able to do the same with the 'outro' (that could effectively skip the walking to the pot, so some few seconds). The other keys of interest to try are also enter and right click. It also helps to rebind left click to mousewheel. As for ending some puzzles early (just important not to do it too early, timing is crucial here), Alt+R for "Run away!!" : P is all-good. And of course, using perhaps the lowest mouse sensitivity (not dpi, mind you) for outline puzzles is kinda helpful, too. If there's anything else, shoot. As for O. D. Nary, that would be the next logical step after optimizing this further (I'll be debating on it tho), alas the CD puzzle HAS to be done there.. and that's not the most inviting fact : P So in that regard D. Feecult is somehow easier, lol. Funny fact. Just decided to brush off two further difficulties. Won the CD challenge on first try on... BOTH of them. Especially D. Feecult was a stunner, since I hardly managed to do it once before. Also, had a really, really friendly maze on D. F. Now what the .... :D

As for the time difference - its a matter of used methods and well, yeah, some grinding too. I wouldn't worry that much, tho ; can believe that it's possible to go below 6 minutes in RTA.

Also, forgot to add. It's helpful to set DOSBox to a bit higher cycles. In my case about 35k do the trick ; this way the loading times between the stages are slightly lower.

PLANET23K Alright cool. It's good that someone else is running the game now. I'd really like to see you stick with it for a bit. Also, I've mapped out a winning sequence for all Tax Factor games (the bridge guardian) on B Ginner and O D Nary. I'll put it on the resource section of Speedrun.com

Well, I've beaten my 'nightmare' of sorts so I don't know how I'll go at it, but since it's possible to noticeably better, there's some motivation of sorts : ) You mean the guides section? OK, I also made 6-12 schematics when preparing, it's good to be prepared : P (and not make an error later ; )
