The Secret History of Theme Parks with Defunctland - Factually! - 225
Theme park rides stand as one of the few forms of popular entertainment that can vanish with no way to experience them once again. So, how can such a cherished art form be preserved? Kevin Perjurer, the creative mind behind Defunctland, has made it his business to document the fleeting nature of theme parks, both the good and the bad. In this episode, Adam and Kevin discuss how theme parks shape the cultures that give rise to them, the extent to which our own history is molded and packaged for our entertainment, and the pivotal role KZread historians play in dismantling the everyday myths we tell ourselves.

Two things: 1. Someone needs to animate the wiggles section of this video 2. Wiggles knowledge is directly indexed to age and whether or not you or your friends have children. I only know about the Wiggles because a friend has a child.
Hearing this convo, I realize that explaining The Wiggles to someone who has never heard of them sounds insane. “YOU DONT KNOW FRUIT SALAD YUMMY YUMMY?!?!”
1:03:53 the wiggles conversation begins, and adam reveals he doesn't know what the wiggles are. That conversation is almost exactly what happened to me with my partner as kevin and me as adam staring blankly as he says 'you don't know toot toot chugga chugga big red car?'

When I watched the Disney channel jingle video, I remember crying at the end reveal. I honestly think he should submit something to a film festival someday. He's such a wonderful storyteller.
The thing that made Perjurer's doc on the Disney theme so memorable for me, was another happy accident. His video came out within days or weeks of hbomberguy releasing his video on the Minecraft oof sound. Both ended up being stories that got away from these creators in their depth and scope, but landed on opposite ends of the creativity spectrum, While Kevin found and brought to light someone deserving of praise for their work, and so did Harry, Harry had no choice but to end up focusing on the man who went to fantastical efforts to claim credit for work that wasn't his, and hide the legacy of those that really did the work. Watching both stories in succession really brought them into amazing contrasting focus. One time the Youttube algorithm didn't fail me.

I was drawn to Defunctland because my grandfather was part of an engineering team that worked on a bunch of Epcot attractions back when they were first built, including Spaceship Earth and The Living Seas. The sad nostalgia I felt when Living Seas became Finding Nemo themed hit me weirdly hard, and I always wished there were more people who cared about the old rides. And Defunctland is clearly working from a similar mindset, putting down some of the best content on KZread.

Even if you didn't watch the Wiggles as a late 90s kid or were old enough to have children watching it, they were a pretty big phenomenon in the US (children's shows arena), as big as maybe Arthur, Blues Clues, Barney, or Dora the Explorer which I'd imagine Adam would know of. Adam is my exact age and until recent adulthood I had never heard of the Wiggles as a US phenomenon; only as a joke I heard in the UK about them when I lived there. He genuinely and easily simply missed it. We're too old for it, as well as too young (having been older teens in the late 90s). Same reason he has zero context for the Disney Channel theme--same as me, A Poor who did not grow up with cable. Plenty of pop culture is not universal, and it's actually MORE interesting to probe into *why* people of various ages/background don't know about something that seems super obvious to you.

I have been a fan of Kevin Perjurer when "Defunctland" was a project to build a virtual theme park filled with attractions that no longer exist. His video on the Snow White wrap party is probably the video I share the most on this platform. I was a casual Disney fan, but after I started watching Defunctland I branched out to other theme park vid creators, videos of people exploring parts of Disney that are closed to the public/abandoned, criticism of older Disney movies, etc. I will admit, however, that one thing I was excited about when I saw the interview was maybe seeing what Mr. Perjurer looks like. :(
Serious, excellent interviews with a person represented by a Mickey Mouse avatar. What a time to be alive.

Interesting fact regarding the point made about the walk-able nature of Buffalo, NY: Buffalo's park and parkway system was designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. His portfolio includes famous parks and zoos like Central Park in NYC, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Cadwalader Park in Trenton, NJ, and the Niagara Falls Reservation state park. The radial layout of the city itself was designed by Joseph Ellicott, based on the original 1791 design for Washington DC (itself loosely based on Paris). Unfortunately, a lot of the surrounding towns and suburbs fell prey to the other (in)famous civil architect, Robert Moses. Thankfully, Buffalo is slowly undoing a lot of the damage that Moses did and re-implementing a lot of the parkways and walk-able spaces that were replaced by express ways and highways in the 1940s and 50s.

46:37 I think Adam's point about the reappraisal of George Lucas and the prequels applies to Michael Eisner as well. As Disney's CEO, Eisner was a powerful guy with a lot of weird ideas, some of which were fantastic and others not so much. But even his blunders have been reevaluated in a positive manner because that sort of unleashed risktaking is arguably a better creative strategy than what we have seen for nearly 20 years under Bob Iger, that being a more corporate approach with several colossal acquisitions and a heavy focus on franchises and existing intellectual property.
The "somebody wanted to make this" immediately made me think of the TV show community, and how much the early years of that show felt like Dan Harmon's will manifest, even though it was made by a writer's room. Most tv shows I see have a plurality of voices, but this one stands out in my mind of a 21st century example of the one man doing his thing.
I'm with Adam on the Disney Channel Theme episode. A topic that I had no nostalgic connection to, but that I found unbelievably fascinating thanks to Kevin.
Sehnsucht Is the German word that most closely relates to what we call nostalgia in English. In Old High German it translates to "sickness of the painful craving". Nostalgia Greek origin; Nostos (return, home), and Algos (pain) roughly means to feel acute homesickness in the moment. There is a melancholic longing to Defunctland documentaries that sits with you but the occasional well-timed joke helps to break it up and make it bearable. Thanks for the content guys.

I didn't know who the Wiggles are either, thank you so much for this interaction lmao
I’m glad Kevin noted that our concept of the 50s is based on the 80s. I’ve been thinking about that a lot since Paul Reubens’s passing. I have a deep love of the 80s but not the usual love people have. It’s not He-Man and Madonna, it’s the B-52s and Pee-Wee Herman. The 80s that were an over saturated funhouse mirror of the 50s and early 60s. Half of goth rock is straight up just surf rock.
This whole thing is an absolute goddamn delight, top to bottom. The ultimate crossover I never expected. Thank you, thank you, thank you both.
Kevin’s videos got me through the pandemic. His fastpass video remains one of my favourite pieces of media ever (including movies, TV shows, music, etc), and the Disney channel theme song video made me weep. Defunctland is filed under “this shouldn’t be free” in my recommendations of video essays.
Kevin is amazing. Defunctland makes some of the best video essays out there and I lose my mind every time I rewatch the Fastpass video.
We used to be obsessed with ghost towns and they have been rendered cheesy by modern standards because if they still exist, they are extremely remote or commodified into tourist attractions. Defunctland's interesting because it reverses the stream and examines what happens when it goes the other way. What ghost towns can we explore that started as tourist attractions, but are now ghost towns in the middle of dense urban sprawl. (Jenny Nicholson has done videos where she goes to abandoned theme parks and is fun, too.)

(And Adam, if it helps at all, the ONLY reason I know about the Wiggles is because my adult friend who trucked in obscure music scenes was obsessed with them for psychedelic reasons.)

Yeah the closest thing that exists to modern ghost towns are ones on the verge of dying but still have stragglers. Look at Centralia for the most well known example.
On the next episode of Adam Ruins the Wiggles... I'm so glad you actually asked about the wiggles because though I've heard of them I didn't actually know what they were -- aside from this weird notion that I had but someone once told me they were more palatable than the Teletubbies
This person (and two others) are the reason I wantto make video essays. So I really love this interview. I think this is the first time I havent just played a podcast in the background. I was actively hanging on each topic.
Great episode, It was insightful and funny also. As somebody who was forcibly subjected to hours upon hours of the wiggles , that portion of the podcast was absolutely hysterical.
I have enjoyed Defunctland for quite a while now and it is great to hear the creator interviewed. Great respect!
This is the crossover event I never knew I needed. Adam learning about the Wiggles was one of the best things. Adam Learns New Things is a show I would 100% watch.
THE CROSSOVER I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED Loved these two for at least a decade. Even just the first 2 min with Adam talking about Kevin had me so happy and hype lol
This is so cool, so proud of you Kevin!!!! Been watching Defunctland for the longest time and im so happy to see him blowing up more 😊
I also loved it when Kevin tried to explain the Wiggles to Adam. Now I hope Adam will go to Defunctland and listen to the Wiggles episode.
Defunctland as a channel more than anything makes me really feel time. Time feels so abstract until confronted with this feeling of past joy and not being able to ever go back. I just cried so much after I finished his Jim Henson series, I could feel how Jim felt time slip away until it all was gone and in that moment I felt my own time slipping in seconds away from me. It’s an indescribable pain to feel life slipping away in time and still see the beauty of the individual moments.
51:30 THANK YOU, KEVIN! in the grand scheme of things, the US has not been around as a country for very long. The implications of that fact have been keeping me awake for years.
The collab of the year!! I love both of their channels this is a dream come true!
2 of my favorites combined!! Adam and Defunctland!!!! Great show!
Thank you for giving this channel more exposure. I had never heard of this channel before. Now I can’t get enough of it.
