I don’t really blame the Qing completely; it was the Chinese dynasties in general never really modernizing or working upwards from their own inventions. Invent gunpowder? Let’s just use that for basic artillery, riffles and mainly for fireworks Early printing press? Use it solely to print out ancient Confucian texts An incredibly large navy? Use it mainly to secure the trade and never do much significant exploration The Chinese dynasties where mainly driven by tradition, not because intellectuals didn’t exist as rulers mind you, but because the state itself was driven purely by nostalgia

A quick fun fact is Maori who are the natives of New Zealand, used trench warfare against the British, as a Maori I remember playing in the old trenches as a child, we call them Pā. Another interesting fact the might make you interested is that during the war the Maori killed a Prussian officer.

Despite being a fairly unjust war waged on the chinese its just so hard to have any sympathy for them. It was blind luck that saved Parke and the other ambassadors from execution, not to mention their physical abuse beforehand. The chinese tortured those poor soldiers along with Parke to death. The chinese got exactly what they deserved. If anything they got off lightly And the chinese had the gall to call the westerners barbarians I really hope you continue this China series with the so called "Boxer Rebellion"

Interesting parallel between Alaric's sack of Rome and the burning of the Summer Palace, both were provoked by atrocities that the empire committed against those of the invaders in their power. Honorius ordered the massacre of the Goths' families living in Rome, and soon after the Gothic foederati rebels sacked Rome for the first time in centuries.

Cixi is poorly portrayed by Chinese historians because at that time women are seen to be completely unfit to rule even as a regent. They have little respect to Queen Victoria either, just because she is a woman. This may be caused by reactionary sentiment during Qing era, because Empress Lü Zhi (呂雉) was generally accepted at Han era.

Fun fact I learned not too long ago, the palace depicted at 16:02 and 16:32 was designed by a man named Giuseppe Castiglione. He was as Jesuit Missionary and court painter from Milan for the Qing in the mid 18th century. Like much of the rest of the summer palace it was destroyed. Very sad, but also poetic that a palace designed by a European in China, intended as a fusion of the two cultures, should meet its end in a war that drove them further apart.

As you saw in the video, the Chinese DID have guns. Otherwise they couldn't have lost 75 of them to the Brits in one battle. The problem is far more complex. We see often during this time period non-Westerners bringing guns against Westerners and STILL losing with utterly lop-sided casualty figures. I'm not sure why this is, but I have a few guesses. I think that 19th century tactics simply suit Western culture more, as since time immemorial we've always placed an emphasis on close-ordered ranks of infantry. Morale is another possible factor: the British were fighting for their country, which was ruled by a constitutional monarchy, while the Chinese were fighting for Manchu outsider overlords. Also, I think there's simply a factor of institutional experience with a weapons system: the British had well over a century's experience with using guns, cannons, etc. in warfare. The Chinese were johnny-come-lately, and even if they HAD the tools they didn't necessarily know how to use them effectively.
