'The Season' S5 E01 | New Zealand Rugby - Hamilton Boys | Sports Documentary | RugbyPass

Спорт

In a country where rugby is king, high schools are breeding grounds for future rugby talent that the sporting world acknowledges to be the most plentiful on the planet. As a result, competition between the school First XVs is passionate, tribal and highly scrutinised. Young NZers dream of representing their school, pulling on their high school First XV jersey to do battle with local and regional rivals. The most successful First XV in the country over the last ten years is undoubtedly Hamilton Boys High School, based in the North Island’s Waikato region. Multiple winners of the Top 4 National Championships and Super 8 Rugby titles, the school allows cameras into their revered rugby program to witness key parts of their 2019 season including their 100 year anniversary game against powerhouse Auckland Grammar, Super 8 opener against New Plymouth Boys, a rain-soaked clash against Tauranga Boys and the Super 8 decider against fellow over-achievers Hastings Boys. But most critically, the coaching and playing staff reveal themselves to the audience in a personal, intimate portrayal of sport as a way of life, a career choice and a catalyst for growth, development and life experience. Produced by Onion TV in partnership with Rugbypass and in association with Hamilton Boys High School, The Season brings you five episodes of award-winning documentary making inside one of the world’s leading rugby nurseries.

That is just the words of the envious people mate. The true followers of rugby are usually pleased to give credit where credit is due. Well done to NZ school boy rugby, and well done to the school boy rugby players of all nations and creeds. Without you, there would be no future ABs, Boks, Pumas, Les Blues, Brave Blossoms .........

"we tell them we love them" Great words from the Principal/Headmaster. Boys try to be tough, but they all need love. We all do. I was really impressed by Steve Hansen, Richie Mo'unga and other All Blacks staff and players who talked openly about mental health and showing their emotions. Rugby is a tough game. But it's also a loving game.

Is this a real quote from Tana? But honestly, I'm from Auckland and I've partied in AKL, Rotorua, Hamilton and Wellington. I have to say that Hamilton has the best vibe. The people just seem to be so down to earth and welcoming. People shared food with me on the street, we had a laugh in a club, people make more eye-contact and smile. Yeah, there were some dodgy people, but they seemed harmless.

Yes the ABs didn’t get to the final of the RWC this time around but there are some people in the comments that are missing the point of this documentary. NZ and the ABs have consistently been good at Rugby, there was an expectation that they would do very well at the RWC and so when they failed it looked like a long way to fall. It’s happened before and to every team that has won the RWC or any champion team at the top of their game. You don’t always remain at the top. But to maintain the quality teams that have been fielded over the years since Rugby went pro, these stars have to come from somewhere and that’s what the documentary is covering. I think if you were to make a similar documentary in South Africa or even in Australia, you’d probably find many things similar. That is, to build legendary teams and players you start that thirst and passion young.

A few elite rugby schools aren't enough to sustain the ABs. Banning full-contact rugby in schools is killing our player base. The schools I went to back in the 90s, most boys played rugby cause we got use to having games every lunchtime + bullrush. My local which has produced professional players didn't even have a 1st XV this year. Everyone just wants to play basketball cause that's what they do every lunch break. The few elites who are still keen end up going to super 8 schools cause that's the only way to get recognized. Also a lot of Mums are scared of their boys getting hurt and are putting them in soccer. You see it in the current ABs. A lack of mongrel and strength and weakness in key positions. We never had a huge player base to choose from. 50 years from now it will likely be even smaller.

Good school Hamilton Boys High, would love to see them take on SA's best. They have beaten another SA powerhouse school Paarl Boys in the World Sanix Youth Festival final a few years ago, so definitely no pushovers. That being said Grey College, or Grey Bloem as they are more affectionately known, has a habit of completely blanking rival schools on the rugby field with all their teams from u/14F right up to the 1st team winning their matches.

NZ problem when it comes to the World XV comps and this might be SA problem as well is that because of the timing of the world comps often the team that is reppin nz is no longer the best in the country somtimes not even top 5 or 10, for example last years nz winners - St Peters - only finished 5th in the Auckland competition this year bt they repped nz at the worlds early this year because they won it last year, this year Hastings won but by next year they probably arent the best team.

I gotta give a special mention to Hastings BHS in the last 3-4 years they have been very strong too but the stats don't lie Hamilton Boys has be the most CONSISTENT team in NZ. I've been keeping a close eye on the SA schools and they look bigger than our NZ schools and are VERY strong too, but it is way too hard to compare the two systems saying which one is better. The Sanix World invitational tournament for NZ teams is very inconsistent because our winners from this year goes next year due to the schedules. Most schools that win national titles end up losing most of there squad the next year cause they have graduated. I don't know if its the same for SA, but could someone comment and tell me, i'd like to know. But there is no way anyone can say NZ schools is better than SA schools and SA schools is better than NZ schools. All I do know is that they are both a cut above the rest of the world.
