A young woman is desperate for fame and a way out. A young man is pining after the woman of his dreams. A successful writer longs for a sense of achievement. An actress wants to fight the changing of the times. In an isolated home in the countryside, dreams lie in tatters, hopes are dashed, and hearts broken. With nowhere left to turn, the only option is to turn on each other.
Following his critically acclaimed five-star production of Cyrano de Bergerac, Jamie Lloyd brings Anya Reiss’ adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic play to stage. Filmed live in London’s West End.

Brilliant. Chekhov's characters come to life in this story of love and loss. A gem. 🙂

@@markharris1125 I see what you meant. I did think that Jamie Lloyd’s style wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I really loved it because I thought they really managed to get to the heart of the play through relying on the text, the characters and the acting without any distractions from the design elements.

@@samosullivan1744 I know, clearly a lot of people enjoyed it, standing ovation and all that. I just found myself unable to concentrate. There was nothing to attract the eye - it was like that wonderful lake they kept talking about had frozen, the snows had covered the landscape and all there was, was blankness. At one point I'm sure. Emilia Clarke sat with a fixed smile on her face (probably smiling at Trigorin) for a full ten minutes while two characters on green chairs, one of which might have been Robert Glenister, talked about her. Sorry, didn't work for me. Funny side note: if you spell check 'Glennister' You Tube suggests 'Lannister'. How GOT has invaded our lives!

I get they need to have the name for the marketing, and she was wonderful. But you are right Indira Varma was spectacular! However, there were parts of the show I didn’t enjoy. I’m an actor so I am there to watch the performances, but I do love a nice set and the blank staging didn’t do it for me. I get what they were going for, but a more glamorous set would have entertained me more.

It's supposed to take place at a luxurious house on a lake during La Belle Epoque, so you want to see that setting. That's what the Annette Bening movie did right even though it was meh otherwise.

Okay, I saw this and was disappointed. I knew what I was in for because I'd seen Cyrano de Bergerac and knew what this director does. But: a bare chipboard stage. Green plastic chairs. No costume, no staging, no special lighting. Emilia's beautiful of course but the character has virtually nothing to do. Indira Varma is the standout performer, with Tom Rhys Harries (in this clip) as the creepy Trigorin a good second. At least they drive the plot. (Look at any interview with her - she's funny, a bit crazy, full of laughter. We hardly ever saw this in Daenerys and we certainly don't see it in Nina.) Maybe I'm a philistine of some kind but in the last few weeks I've seen The Tempest at the Globe, South Pacific at Sadlers Wells, Jack Absolute and Much Ado at the National, and Mad House at the Ambassador's. All mesmerising shows because of the acting - and the sets. The imaginative sets that employ designers and craftspeople, that allow us to imagine we're taking a peek into these people's lives. In the spring I saw Kit Harrington at the Donmar - minimal staging there due to the nature of the place, but clever use of lights, sound, props and space brought the story to life. It looks like this recording is going to focus tight on people's faces - maybe that will make it work. But I'm afraid, just like Cyrano, watching this was like watching the first rehearsal in a studio in Hampstead. I was bored out of my mind. I resented the fact I'd paid quite a lot for a front row seat. "What's in the bag?" he says. And there's not even a bag! Sorry, Jamie Lloyd, you won't fool me a third time. And sorry, Seagull.

@@laurae1 I'm glad I seem to have opened up a channel for people to say they were disappointed by this production! Honestly, it was the same with Cyrano, went there all excited to see James McAvoy, came away feeling really let down. I think it's a bit of an insult, really. If you left at half-time, you missed Emilia's triumphant return, when the other characters talked about her for twenty minutes before they noticed she was at the back of the stage. Let's see her in a great comedy, like Present Laughter at the Old Vic a couple of years ago, great set, great costumes, witty meaningful dialogue, Oliviers all round!
