The screenwriters of Chappaquiddick had never heard about the scandal before writing the movie

Ойын-сауық

Written by Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan, Chappaquiddick is a recount of the scandal surrounding the 1969 car accident involving Ted Kennedy in which campaign strategist Mary Jo Kopechne was killed. We sat down with the Allen and Logan to talk about their knowledge of the scandal, their research before writing the movie, and how the scandal changed the way politicians were perceived.

I don't think the public ever held politicians as being on a pedestal!

The movie was well done. I was afraid that it would stick only to facts provable beyond reasonable doubt, but they did interpolate using probable inference, and did a good job with just that in showing what a scoundrel this man was, and what political prostitutes the Massachusettes law enforcement, judicial, and prosecutorial community were.

Our brains these days are really like Homer Simpson's: too much going on today alone for our brain cells to absorb the blizzard of information which we are told we need to know or be aware of so we have to be selective to such a degree about what we absorb such that what an older generation was very aware of is not known at all by a successive one. These two young men I think said that they "hopped onto the Google machine". Fair enough. But the guy on the right mentions Chappaquiddick as being something his mother's generation was aware of. I wonder if parents and grand-parents today, in the presence of their children, are fearful to refer to a particular event when they were young that they were aware of because they don't want to give the impression that they are urging their kids to learn much more about recent social history and popular culture that their parents lived through as these kids are already under time pressure today as it is, in our constantly time-stamped lives of the internet age. Or maybe parents are fearful of giving 'useless' information to their kids because they don't want to cloud their already clouded brains, send them off on the wrong track and have them become embarrassing to their teenage friends lest they make their kids the party bores by turning them into conversationalists who constantly refer to the past ("Joe, tomorrow we're hanging out in ... for a few hours. Wanna come?" "Wow, Jack. Did you know that the Hindenburg airship disaster occurred in a field just outside there, in 1937?" -cue blank faces all round). As it is, the past is not cool. We only see the present. But if we look to the future, we must also equally look at the past. Don't google first. Ask grandad for words of wisdom, advice and ... useless information clarified.

Yeah, I remember this as a 12-year old kid. It made the front page several times for the newspapers I delivered. Let's not be too naive. Justice was never served for this simple case of involuntary manslaughter. If anything, the specter of cognitive dissonance allowed this guy freedom by our own citizens....especially those of you who continued to vote this guy into office. If you or I did this to one of his family, we'd be dead and gone while doing time in prison. It appears by some of the comments, that we are still willing to give this a pass...with all sorts of rationale that murders that poor woman all over again.

Irrelevant. Your statement should raise much bigger questions. How was he able to escape the vehicle and not Mary Jo? Why didn't he ensure that she made it to safety in the same route he exited the car? According to reports, after he left the scene, he had to pass by homes that could have called for help to save this young woman (if she was still alive). He chose not to do that. Why? According to other reports, she may have been alive for some time since there was air in the car. He waited for over nine hours to even report it. If this was my daughter....if this was your daughter, we would expect more from our justice system. Had I been the driver, the full extent of the law would have been levied against me and I would have ended up in prison. He got off with a suspended sentence for "leaving the scene of an accident". I don't expect blood, just equal application of the laws that are supposed to protect us. Instead, everyone looked the other way.

Good movie but the drowning was too overwhelming. The team that Teddy's father put together to help was good.

No. ‘72? No. Bobby wasn’t winning in ‘68, even though the media teaches you that he was. McCarthy was doing very well as he was for the end of the war. But no matter what Humphrey was going to be the nominee. That’s politics. As for Teddy, he wouldn’t have run against Nixon. Nixon had all the dirt on the Kennedys. And Teddy was the dirtiest! Teddy may have run in the mid 70s. Instead of Carter being the nominee it may have been Teddy. But he wouldn’t of had the whole party behind him. Ford was a weak presidential stand in.
