The Scofflaw! | the original rebel cocktail
With roots in prohibition, both the cocktail and the word itself defied each other. Originally referring to those who drank illegally, the word "scofflaw" has come to represent those who disregard small regulations that are difficult to enforce (particularly traffic laws). The cocktail, on the other hand, has remained unchanged for the most part. So I'd say the drink won!
This is a bright and tasty cocktail with flavors of spicy rye whiskey and sharp lemon, but presented in a delicate way. In this video I'll show you the recipe I use for the scofflaw. We'll talk about why I choose the ratios I do, the history of the word "scofflaw", and petty acts of defying the law from parking tickets to stealing pumpkins. Cheers!

The more of these videos I watch, the more I enjoy the personality of both the on-camera talent, and the behind-the-scenes frequent taster. Watch it to the end - worth the time!
I am picturing two bar patrons bumping into each other. "You got whiskey sour in my Dry Manhattan!" "You got Dry Manhattan in my Whiskey Sour!" Two great tastes that taste great together.
Found this video after following your homemade grenadine recipe. I have some special 126 proof rye whiskey that I used to make the cocktail, and it came out pretty good!
Perhaps I am late to the game; but your videos are fantastic! Thank you for all of the education, and for you, being you. Thank you kindly.
Love a quick and easy sip! Thanks for a new recipe Anders!
Love your content from everything I’ve seen to date. Also this cocktail is super refreshing and tasty! I’m definitely adding it to the rotation.
I’m glad that you randomly stumbled into my recommendations
So heeere’s where the catchy intro begins. You two have one of the cleanest intros of any channel in my opinion.
Watched many many cocktail videos but Anders you make them look so good! Every creation looks so good on camera. Keep going mate!
A year after he published this vid, I finally vimr across it and get totally thrown for a loop at the "sexy shake" cutaway...made my day Anders! 😆
OUTSTANDING cocktail Sir. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Just made this with homemade grenadine that I made this afternoon from your recipe and a good local rye (Hard Truth). Served it in Nick and Nora glasses that have been in the china cabinet for as long as I can remember (I'm 54). The counterpoint between the rye and the vermouth is delightful. Thanks for sharing this terrific cocktail. My new favorite! I say that every time I try a new cocktail from one of your videos!
Simply the best communicator
Keep up the good work man this was a cocktail whos spec I often scoffed at until I made one for fun for the staff at my restaurant. Blew me away how unique it was. Great content!
Your Wisconsin sense of humor shows, bud 🤣. From north of the Cheddar Curtain myself. Best channel I have found during the pandemic-mostly because I took up mixing drinks but I definitely stayed for the laughs. Excellent content…like making drinks with my bartender buddy I’ve known for years.

Thank you so much! Glad you're liking the channel. it's always nice to meet someone from Wisconsin - appreciate the comment!
Nice music, again. Evocative of the era you are talking about. Nice touch. Love the recipes with grenadine, too.
I've actually never gotten a parking ticket. Or any ticket, for that matter. Never even thought about that until this episode.
You and Az are so fun! Cheers!
I finally got around to making the Scofflaw cocktail along with your homemade Grenadine recipe. It was a big hit! Thanks
Great cocktail, always a winner.
Somehow, the "slo-mo special effects" when shaking the cocktails were very cool, congrats to both of you! I guess I'll go to actually try building and tasting this cocktail too!
Another great video! I love the antics!! 😂🤣😂😂 🥃🍹🥂🍷
Made this last night and loved it!
This drink was fantastic! I ran out of rye so I subbed in MB Roland Bourbon 111 proof. That drink was amazing as well. The amount of grenadine is perfect. Thanks for the wonderful content!
The “magic” actually tricked my drunk self for a minute… happy New Years I guess lol have a great 2022 y’all!
Made it, drank it, loved it. I Scoff at you NOT! Nicely done. Yet another cocktail added to the regular rotation at my home bar.
loved this one! so yummy
Guess who’s having scofflaws tonight?! Meeeee! Another great video from the dynamic duo!

Yay!! Cheers to you and your scofflaw. Thanks, Lindsay!
The dry vermouth def gets that sour flavor after some time but the sweet vermouth taste great for a pretty long time. I buy the big bottles of that and it never seems to taste bad. Might be the sugar acting as a preservative... not sure really but it is something I have noticed with both Cocchi and Gallo (a really great alternative to Cocchi and half the price).
Also great choice in background music for the drink you are making. Just noticed that :-D
The slo mo edits 😂. But for real great music and cuts
One of my favourites. But I do like grenadine, highly tart with less sugar made just before the cocktail
I love your videos! I just wish that Oz had her own mic so the audio would be consistent for both of you.
Oooo. Different time on the clock.
Who knew about the Vermouth!?!? Great drink, has all my favs and get to use the homemade grenadine! Cheers!

Before you go any further... 3:38
for a little twist, angostura orange bitters instead and less grenadine and a little honey syrup... super yum :)
Love this one! Tried a bit of a riff that turned out really nicely! Solely because of the ingredients I had on hand and it just happened to work out. I had some cherry juice we bought for mimosas for new years day that we weren't really drinking. So I made a cherry syrup! 1 cup cherry juice (the good stuff, not that abomination that is Welch's) : 3/4 cup turbinado sugar (the cherry juice is already REALLY sweet) 2 oz bourbon (due to lack of rye on hand) 1 oz dry vermouth 1/2 oz lemon juice 1/2 oz cherry syrup (I wanted a bit more so I could see how it turned out. But really I should probably stick with 1/4 oz, it was maybe a tad sweet. Call it 3/8 oz!) Really nice! If it doesn't exist already, I'll call it the "Walfox".
You should make a video about dry vermouth cocktails besides this, Old Pal, and Martini.
They don't sell any small vermouth bottles in my country so instead of facing having to throw it out or having to devote way too much fridge space to awkward 750ml bottles, I crack open the bottle and drink 250ml (great with tonic water honestly) and transfer the rest into a stubby 500ml glass container that fits away nicely in the back of my fridge.
What about the infamous Canada Trip? You're both scofflaws. Thank you for being tart but not harsh. And the best magic is the magic that you have to explain. Thank you both again for the Happy Friday.

Recently discovered your channel. Great videos. Classic cocktails without the pretentiousness. I’m visiting Chicago, where I lived for 7 years in the late 80’s - early 90’s, in September. Would love to stop by your bar and say hello. Where do you work?
Tackar!!👍
Yay, a cocktail I haven't made, that lets me use some of my current homemade grenadine! I sure love Rittenhouse as a powerful and delicious rye! There was a time, when all I liked was a fine wine (nothing wrong with lovely red and white wines) but in the last 6 months, the world of cocktails has blossomed in a lovely way! I am looking forward to a Scofflaw tonight!! I love the term! Cheers Anders!

If you are trying to use up your grenadine, can I recommend the Shrunken Skull? It has been putting a good dent in my grenadine (not that I mind).
This was awesome! Flavorful but not syrupy sweet, and I’m totally team orange peel here
Also, Anders- was wondering if you saw my Renault recipe in response to the Ford vs Rolls Royce. If not, no worries, I'm sure you have a lot of random (and drunken) responses.
I'm trying this at work tomorrow/ later today technically speaking. Might become a special for next week. Have everything, except Fee's orange bitters and make our own grenadine from POM brand juice. (Been a scofflaw too, in my younger years)
Good advice on vermouth-I can’t get small enough bottles-vermouth once open turns quickly even if refrigerated

Lmao that slow mo
Either the clock is broken, or you're very fast and noon is a great time for cocktails :D. Either way, thanks for all the great vids. Perfectly put together. Liquor cabinet is getting out of control because of you. Just have to find the Maison Rouge vsop here in the Netherlands. Would Courvoisier be a decent sub?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but would shaking bruise the vermouth? Why not stir?
Wait a minute . . . the clock is NOT at 5:00! So, you are either drinking at midnight or noon.😆
Ja, my vermouth goes bad because I don’t use any in my Martinis. I think about it, but then I only add vodka, maybe Lillet, never vermouth. Of course, now I will buy a small bottle. Thanks f the Friday Happy 9 minutes & 30 seconds! 😎

Absolutely! Pick up a small bottle of vermouth if you can. The Dolin Dry is nice and light, so it won’t overpower your cocktail. See why you think!
Hey Anders. What is your absolute hands down favorite cocktail? The one your stuck with on a deserted island with an unlimited supply of only those ingredients for that cocktail? Same question for Az.
They sell canisters of gas you can spray into vermouth that keep the oxygen out. Extends the life in the fridge a ton.

That's a great tip! What's the gas called?
In Denmark, parking tickets are nothing to scoff at. I don't know how much they are in the US, but over here, a parking ticket is like 90US$.

In my 15 years of living/driving in CA, I've only ever payed one and it was for around $70, but I know they get to be $100 or more if you park in a red or forget to move your car on street-sweeping day.
Can I make it with bourbon whiskey instead of rye?
My favorite KZreadr. Such great recipes. Love the scofflaw.
will you do a cocktail from Sri Lanka Arrack attack please

When I first started out it took quite a few times to get it right, but over the years it’s gotten quicker.
Can we get Anders a cross reinforcement of his mixing table so that it stops wiggling when he leans on it?
I`ve done a couple of this... a little bit more on grenadine (3/4 oz) and with lime juice - my wife loved it, smells like candy! Thanks Anders, cheers
Time has stopped!

Hahaha Yeah, I should probably get that fixed 😂 Good eye!
If you don’t pay traffic camera tickets in Texas (and you shouldn’t), they put SCOFFLAW on your registration and you can’t do it online. But if you walk in, it’s no issue and it goes away the following year.
Why double strain? It doesn't seem to contain particulates?
@jprunsfunny

I think it's 50% to gather up all the tiny ice shavings, and 50% to create more "froth" or air in the drink.
“I aided in the theft of a pumpkin”. My only thought was…was this on November 1st?
The finished cocktail you show has a lot of foam, as if there was eggwhite in it. When I mix this with the listed ingredients, there is no foam on top. Why is that?
The slow-mo shake was so unnecessarily necessary
Do two drinks and a tasting on camera with Az. You were both a little sparring on your flavor descriptors this episode, compared to others, but I love the drink idea, I haven’t heard of it before. Thanks for new ideas.
Tried this with Bourbon (given Rye economics), but it was really swamped under the other flavors. Store bought grenadine, so maybe I'll tone that down, and bump the bourbon, next time around.
@padraicbrady
2 жыл бұрын
This really is so much better with homemade grenadine. The candy raspberry notes of the store bought vanish entirely, though the bourbon is still lacking punch. Definitely a cocktail that needs a good rye. Well, I have the grenadine recipe down for small 5oz bottles, so no excuse going forward!

When the word became popular the "dries" started using it thinking it was a real burn. The "wets" thought it was cool and claimed it. This annoyed the "dries" Ever get a ticket for an expired city sticker? It's like $250. Which is sad because it cuts into my Scofflaw fund. Which is sad because I love anything with rye...except bread

That's like playground bully tactics. Claim it as your own and you can't be teased with it and it annoys whoever's trying to get under your skin😋
Here's a pro tip. Use sweet vermouth, not dry. The sweet stuff doesn't blend or overpower the dry vermouth as well as a sweet vermouth. It's still pretty smooth & not too sweet. It's just right.
