The Science of Stereotypes?: Keith Jason at TEDxEMU
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
This talk will utilize personal experience to examine the potential roles that math and science play in the development of stereotypes, challenge the audience to examine if/what stereotypes they might hold, and provide suggestions for addressing stereotypes.
Keith P. Jason is a two time graduate of EMU. He completed his BS in Marketing in 2003 and his MA in Student Affairs in 2005. He currently works for EMU as the Coordinator of Student Services in the College of Technology and serves as a co-chair for EMU's MLK Celebration. Keith was also elected as a Park Commissioner for Ypsilanti Township in 2012, but says his favorite job is being JaVon's husband and Jozef and Joziah's dad.

Very well done Keith... love how you worked in the shout-out to Freeport!!
Great insights and a fantastic message that can be acted upon by anyone that wishes to change their pattern and consider what rule they may want to challenge within their life. Thanks. Bob
Great TEDx Talk. Wish the closed captioning would be closer to his actual words. I would love to use this in my class, but I have a student with hearing challenges and needs the CC.
I swear he sounds and acts like a preacher. Wait! Was that a stereotype? 😳😄

Stereotyping is not making a rule from a pattern, but a recognition of a pattern and people are pretty good at it. Most stereotypes are accurate.
Stereotypes are an efficient mechanism designed through biological evolution. The brain needs to keep you alive, and thus survival is the precipitator of this mechanism. In simple form, natural selection retained those who were able to stereotype their environment over those who weren't. Animals use this same mechanism. Stereotyping is not a human contrivance. I did not see the science in this lecture.
Nastya, I watched it P.S: you're beautiful
Lol this is hilarious, stereotypes are not a pattern of behaviour formed out of ignorance. Stereotypes are formed because enough people of a certain race, creed or culture behave in a certain way so consistently that it becomes a general opinion. When are people going to stop pointing the finger of blame on those who believe these stereotypes, and instead accept responsibility for creating them in first place
