Pixar's Up (2008) is notorious for having one of THE BEST Pixar sequences in their entire history. The opening of this movie is a masterpiece. A short in it's own right. Silent, endearing, and absolutely heartbreaking. So of course that is the scene we'll be dissecting today to see how every shot comes together to tell this beautiful story that is just the foundation of this wonderful Pixar entry. This is The Scene That CHANGED Pixar's Up...

I feel like this deserves a "The Scene That Also Changed Pixar's Up" because the scene of him at the top of paradise falls with the book again until he gets rid of all his stuff to get the house to fly again is just as important as this scene because it brings his character here to it's emotional climax. Acceptance and letting go.

Yeah, but you can’t include that scene without also including the final few seconds of the film where we see the house had at last come to rest at the falls right after we saw his newfound friendship with Russell and Dug-representing Carl’s realization that he had long ago fulfilled his promise of giving Ellie an adventure worthwhile and therefore, could move on to another adventure. One without the emotional baggage and guilt that had tied him down after Ellie passed away

I think the saddest part of the movie was when he was in his house ontop of the falls and decided to go into the adventure book and he saw all the memories that Ellie put into it and followed by “thanks for the adventure, go have another one”

As a kid, this scene always touched me. My grandparents, who had been married for 40 years, had bought the DVD, so I always watched this film in their home. I could not help but cry every time. I never would have imagined how personal this would become to me as an adult. Watching my grandmother lose my grandfather, seeing him lose his momentum, understanding that the dreams she had of traveling with him again would never come true. I always felt so similar to Ellie, and after 2 miscarriages, being in that room hearing that devastated news after already preparing a room at home to recieve a little one, I only now truly understand the scene where she sat outside, just staring out into the distance. But as my grandpa used to say, "life goes on". Thank you Dazz for reviewing this scene that I'm sure holds a special place in many hearts, especially as we have all gotten older and have had a chance to experience a slice of life.

Ah yes, the film that dared to take the opening of _Finding Nemo,_ and amp it up to 1000. This scene perfectly introduces the main protagonist, and instantly lets us know why he's the way he is and makes us root for him and his daring plan. That's some very powerful stuff.

I’m really not trying to be specieist or anything, because I love Finding Nemo and that scene still hits me to this day, but for most people, seeing a human (or a common domestic animal like a dog) die will always hit harder

Another scene that is severely overlooked in Up is when Carl is looking through the Adventure Book after placing the house on paradise falls. The soundtrack, slower. The notes, longer. No dialogue either. The emotional chin quivers on Carl. The end message on the book “Thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one!”. Tears Every Time 😭

I love how in the beginning of that scene, everything is pale and desaturated, displaying how Carl feels no satisfaction or contentment. But by the end of the scene, when he realizes what a happy life he's had all this time, the room is filled with bright colors, showing his newfound sense of energy.

13:59 I have not think it before but during tie scenes where we can see Carl's face, we can see that he has brown greyish hair and Ellie hair lost its red color and is more Greyish than Carl. Even in Hospital scene when they are much older Carl's hair is just dark grayish with a bit light greyish, mean while Ellie is full light greyish. Does it mean that Ellie could been older than Carl maybe 2-3 year older, or is that some people hair turn grey much earlier than others? Another thing I belive when Carl kissed Ellie on the forehead, I believe she has alrady passed away and it was his farwell kiss, because it look like she had no reaction to that kiss. And the last thing I think the movies main plot takes some few years after Ellie's funeral, because Carl's hair look light greyish to white.

Love Up is my preferred Disney film. I have a deep affection for the romantic narrative it presents, and it has the remarkable ability to evoke a range of emotions within me, regardless of how my day has been. The movie resonates with me on a profound level and fills me with optimism, despite the ups and downs it portrays. Being from Venezuela, seeing the familiar sights depicted in the film adds an extra layer of sentimental attachment and stirs my heartstrings even further.

This scene hits really hard because carl looks exactly like my grandpa who passed away around a year ago. He also outlived his wife, Elzbieta, but they weren't on great terms... This is one of my favorite kids movies ever made. Reminded me of my grandparents in the montage, while also striking one of my biggest fears, not being able to have kids. I want them so bad but I need to pick the right lady. I've been really close twice, but things didn't work out. The writers really knew how to hit emotions.

I think that due to how impactful the first half of the movie was, people kinda ignore how convoluted and out of place the second half is. In the second half we're introduced to a made-up bird who coincidentally end up being not only real but also placed exactly where Carl and Russel are, which could be fine if it was for comedy puropse but she ended up being the main part of the plot. We also see Carl's childhood hero who he randomly bumped into and should be more than a 100 years old at this point, who also have an army of talking frickin' dogs. Idk about you but it really drops the quality of the movie for me, and no one ever talks about it.

I think this is the best movie Pixar has made from this one scene alone. The rest of the movie is definitely wonderful in itself, but this montage, but it's not often I see a montage taking place over the course of several years setting the theme for the rest of the movie right at the beginning. And it all comes back towards the end, Carl seeing that Ellie may not have made it to Paradise Falls with him, but she still loved him in the end, having appreciated the adventure with him all the same. And to see him let go of the past to help someone who's become like family to him. And like Carl, Russel initially teamed up with the old man for personal gain, but ended up risking his life to do something that really mattered when Kevin got involved. Even Doug stuck his fluffy neck out and stood against his team to protect his new friends. The villain was great too; nothing symbolizes letting go of the past like a fallen hero falling prey to his own obsession. That's why this is my favorite; there are a lot of movies in this catalogue with a great message, but everything in this movie works to enhance it. The characters feel real, the animation is stellar, the casting was perfect for them all, and the music sets the mood really amazingly, all kicked off with this creative intro. And of course, huge shout out to the late Ed Asner. Rest in peace, old timer.

I think it the best "The scene that changed" scene I have ever sawn. Ony all other Movies I wasn't sure what sen it could have been. But here, it is obvious the first time you see it, because it throws away all you thought you know. Ah oOK Carl and Ellie are our Main Characters and we will watch her Journey to Paradise Falls. This scene shows you Carl yes, but Ellie no, and Carl will be way older than you expected. It also shows pretty good, how cruel life can be sometimes.

I do feel emotional during the opening, but it's such a manipulative cliche I can't understand how so many people fall for i? "Oh no, you had am amazing and happy life, excepf for not having biological children, how aaaawful" gimmie a break. It's relying on such heavy-handed symbolism it is slapping you in the face with it.
