I still think the US Navy made a terrible mistake by retiring the S-3 Viking; it was a beast in detecting hostile subs!

Years ago I used to work for the National Ocean Survey(NOS). We were constantly dropping XBTs (Expendable Bathythermographs) to measure the different thermal layers underwater. All this data was being transmitted to the Navy and other centers. I was told the Navy used the data to identify thermal layers where submarines can hide under. These layers inhibit sound from penetrating or help hide any sound the submarine may generate.

When I was in the Navy 50 years ago we had a buoy we could drop from a patrol aircraft to look for thermal layers.

I'm sure there are still hundreds of XBTs dropped each day by ASW vessels of most navies worldwide. One generally cannot do an active sonar range forecast of the day/evening without. Passives rely more on aggressive FFT system processing than anything else IIRC.

There is nothing too secret or exotic about it... the Chinese and Russians don't have the best equipment, and our sailors are tracking them in the Atlantic while still in training. I spent a lot of time in US Navy ASW, most of the mystery is related to IFF and that sort of thing. I feel like maybe the motivations behind your comment might be darker and more nefarious though... you want to feel like you know something other people don't.
