We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

    Hey Duca, most van or RV owners put aircon unit on top of the roof, instead of a window hatch, in order to keep the inside of the van cool ing while you guys or sleeping. And while you have the doors closed and secure. Or you might put a window unit towards the rear of the roof over the bed to keep y'all cool during sleeping time.

    Words of encouragement: Chaucer said "Nothing ventured, nothing gained". A 14th century French proverb: "Qui onques rien n'enprist riens n'achieva (“He who never undertook anything never achieved anything”). And Duca: "Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!"! Roberta, my sense is that your "work in progress' is a lot more important than anything Duca is doing. So, kudos (praise for achievement) to you. :¬) Webhead USA

    Make a pannel to put on the dashboard with toggle switches. Draw on that a checklist. Before driving toggle the switches for every item on the list one switch. One of them is to check the lock on the roof hatch. Driving with an open hatch can give strange damaging effects.

    If ever you drill a hole or install a screw in wood and need to move it slightly you can put tooth picks in the incorrect hole and then put your new screw right beside it without it heading into the previous hole.. With larger screws you may need to cut and shave a small piece of scrap wood to fit.

    When you do the dry fit, try putting masking tape around the the outside of the frame. Then the cleanup is easier.

    One trick that has worked for me is to take a few minutes and write a quick order of operations list for each medium task. Then I seem to stay more focused and don’t forget as many things. Maybe that trick would have helped catch the door window dry fit.

    Hi Duca, you may have done this but I thought I'd let you know that if you have just put sealer around your hatch without prep priming the plastic first, your hatch will leak. It is a major problem in campervans where the plastic will not adhere to the sealer and it won't be noticed for a couple of years, before the plastic releases from the sealer joint. There are a few plastic primers out there. We use a Wurth product. Hope this helps

    Hi. Thanks for the reminder. This Sika butyl is actually made for this kind of application with no primer necessary usa.sika.com/en/industry/automotive-commercialvehicleaftermarket/commercial-vehicleaftermarket/general-sealing-bonding/sikalastomer-714.html#documents If you see the manual for the window installation that's the one they say to use and also they don't suggest any primer application. I would agree if it was Sikaflex sealant, than they would need some primer, for sure

    Curious: In all the van builds I have watched on KZread channels, I have never seen wood frames for the windows. It appears the wood frames are required by the installation instructions. Were windows that do not require a wood frame not available in France? Or were there reasons to select windows needing wood frames over windows with no added frames of any type?

  • @OddLifeCrafting

    @OddLifeCrafting

    Hi, Wendy. All the ones we saw use a wooden frame, like these ones: kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6lq0Lt9fLK3adY.html / kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIaKwcFulNvdo9I.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYV3tLujadHdnrw.html and many others. There is even companies that sell the frame for specific cars, not just in Europe. The manual says to have a frame.

    Mmm more over engineering by the looks of it, maybe go to a van conversion company and see how they frame up probably 25x10 batton and a fillet corner if needed but it's only a spacer it has no value, otherwise the ceiling liner would have served the purpose . The roof lite seals from the outside . Hence the precision was not important. Happy camping Also a roof fan will become important maybe it can be added.

    This is specifically for vans. The one specific from renault is a looot more expensive and it is either fixed glazing (doesn't open) or is a tiny sliding one that will ventilate a lot less and if raining you can't open. This one in my opinion is way better. The curvature of the dor is something that every one that installs window on the side of a cargo van more or less need to deal with it.
