Bayern Munich are having a tough time again, just as they did last season. Or at least, that’s what 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles would condition you to believe. In reality, are they really struggling as much as their fans and some pundits would have you believe? And does the shadow of yet another Uli Hoeneß managerial dismissal deserve to be haunting Thomas Tuchel.

@@taliamason7986True but I think they should have stuck to that plan and then properly planned for the next stages. Them rushing for Tuchel always felt rushed, like a panic appointment. Coz he's still a fantastic manager, but just doesn't seem like the right fit and right time for where Bayern are in their project. Will be interesting to see how all this plays out in the end. Coz I reckon Bayern will eventually win with Tuchel but I think it will come at a cost, kinda like what we see with Conte and Mourinho teams where they win but then everything ends in chaos after the winning lol

@@taliamason7986 How? Sacking Nagelsmann is what got them knocked out of the Pokal and with him in charge they would've definitely performed better against City and would've most likely advanced. They went for Tuchel out of panic of another club would get him, look how that turned out.

@@kuromori6200It doesn't matter if they would have won the treble. The hierarchy at that club had always planned to remove Nagelsmann at the end of the last season not because of results but primarily because of the way he was conducting himself that to them wasn't seen befitting to manage such a club. Basically they expect their Managers to behave and conduct themselves in a certain way that aligns with their traditions which you could rightly and fairly point out is a little bit outdated nowadays especially with most young promising upcoming Managers in Europe.

Honestly for all the criticism that Bayern gets for being second to Leverkusen, look at the insane run of games Leverkusen has put up. They're the only undefeated team in the top 5 leagues, and that's with just 3 draws out of 18 games, giving them an 83% win rate. Even the Arsenal Invincible season only had a 68% win rate. Even PSG with zero competition in the farmer's league don't have a win rate as good as Leverkusen (72%). Bayern isn't doing that badly, Leverkusen is just playing so well that it makes them look worse by comparison. Sure Bayern might not be playing the most attractive and convincing football in the world, but you can't really say they're "bottling" the league either when their opponent is quite literally invincible.

Mate, you’ve won 14 of 18 league matches, are on pace to pick up 21 more points this year than you did last. Didn’t lose a champions league group stage match, again, and would be runaway title winners if this team simply didn’t have to deal with a still undefeated Leverkusen. Many fans have stuck with their clubs through much worse. I woke up at 9 AM every Saturday last year to watch Leicester get relegated, and despite my time difference, I didn’t miss a game. If you think scoring 2.4 points per game in the Bundesliga is something that’s deserving of losing your fandom, you really should check at see why you even watch this sport.

Hey Adrian, Bayern member here living outside of Munich here. Great take on the Tuchel situation. We have definitely been spoiled the last 11 years, which is why our demands are so high. I believe Tuchel is a great coach and should receive more trust from the board (wants a holding 6 and gets Dier…DIER). It’ll be interesting to see how they play tonight and in the coming weeks. The board ask for continuity but can’t help but pull the trigger on managers quickly these past couple of years. Of course I want to win the Bundesliga again this season but if we’re being honest, Leverkusen has played the best football and look like they could definitely win the league this season. It's probably just the end of an era. They've been so dominant for the last fifteen years but there will always be a moment where you just can't keep that up anymore. This is because indeed players get complacent, the wrong manager might take over, a change in leadership within the club, another club raising the bar, etc. For Bayern, after eleven title wins in a row and a treble, it's just time.

People say this every year when any club in Germany finally competes with Bayern München. They said it when Wolfsbug won, they said it when Schalke had an impressive run, they said it when Dortmuns was the big number 2 and now they say it again with Bayer Leverkusen. In my opinion the Bundesliga will always be dominated by Bayern München hence this league will never be on a level with other top European leagues. Its not the lack of quality or money, ot the 50+ rule, its the fact that you know before the start of the season who will win it. In Italy and Spain you have a much more competitive field of title contenders.

Tuchel was very good with Chelsea even in the 2nd season. Chelsea finished 3rd with Lukaku as the striker and James, Chilwell and Kante were out for most of the season. Not to mention the chaos around the club at that time due to the Russia-Ukraine war. I genuinely believe had Tuchel been given more time at Chelsea, they would have become title-challengers. Also, personally i prefer result-based football over style-based which aint winning anything. Not everyone can be Pep. Even Zidane's RM played result-based football which led them to the greatest achievement in club sports' history: 3 consecutive Champions League titles.

Another thing, and this is just my guess, it seems to me that Tuchel isn't as interested in the Bayern job. He kinda seems like he's going with the flow because it his job. At Chelsea, he seemed like he wanted to be there and enjoyed. I think this could be more to do with Bayern going through a rough period and I guess it could be football's boredness with German football being a one team for 11 years. Just my 2 cents.

Bayern fan as well… the Tuchel style lacks the ruthless verticality that Bayern fans appreciate and the football is boring to watch mostly. Also, Tuchel publicly knocks talented players and can’t seem to get a system where Kane actually gets passes. It’s frustrating; the individual talent on the team is immense but Tuchel needs to go. I actually don’t mind losing the table to Leverkusen because they more than deserve to be there. What will bother me is getting our asses handed to us by City or Real in the UCL. Hoping for Xabi this summer 🇩🇪 Hey and your videos are insightful, well researched and very entertaining so thank you!

As a Bayern fan, this feels like all the issues from last season coming home to roost. All things considered, Bayern should not have won last year. Dortmund had it and choked. But this year the squad just feels lackidasical and the lineups Tuchel is putting out are uninspired. I dont see Leverkusen dropping any games from here on out, and it seems like a foregone conclusion theyre going to win the league from where I'm standing. I just hope we can regroup and take back the crown next season. If we keep this up its dark days ahead.

  • @TheNouriani

Hey Adrian, great video as always! Bayern fan here that feels like giving his perspective as well, lol. So first, I want to go to the Nagelsmann sacking and how I personally think that was a big catalyst for everything going on at Bayern. Brazzo and Oliver Kahn clearly had a plan in mind, and Julian Nagelsmann did not fit that plan. Whether they did not like his style of football, whether it was the alleged strained relationships JN had with some of the senior players in the squad (among them allegedly Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski). To go after Thomas Tuchel simply because they were worried about losing the treble was insanity, and Kahn and Brazzo paid for it with their jobs of course, as they should have. I always believed that JN could have been a Wenger like figure for Bayern, or a Pep at Man City, always adjusting and changing his style to fit new trends in football, and making his own. I would definitely agree that Tuchel's style has not been the attractive style of football that Bayern fans have come to expect over the last 10, almost 20 years since Louis Van Gaal became manager. In general, I think the quote by Honigstein does fit the mentality at Bayern currently. Let's be honest, Dortmund have kind of choked away any challenge to Bayern recently, and clubs like RB Leipzig have played their best when Bayern had their strongest squads. I would also argue that certain players have also become complacent, and for some of them I don't even really blame them. When you have won a treble like Goretzka, Kimmich, Davies, Muller, Neuer, Coman, etc. how do you keep that competitive spirit up when you already climbed the mountain? I can certainly understand that. Especially for players like Neuer and Muller who have won TWO trebles!! I also think the general craziness and obsession with winning has cost Bayern and has effected the players. After JN was sacked, player like Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka were allegedly very shocked to learn JN had been let go. Add that to Brazzo and Kahn leaving at the end of the season and the retired Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rumenigge returning to the club, other front office guys like Christopher Freund coming in as sporting director, Max Eberl likely soon coming to the club, Bayern have been a club in flux. KHR and Hoeness had one style, Brazzo and Kahn had another. Now Uli and KHR are back and have their style in again and seem to be hoping people like Eberl and Freund can take over the club. I have to imagine this turnover and change in philosophy effects the players. I think an underrated factor effecting Bayern's play is also just how frequently they have changed managers. Take a look at Joshua Kimmich for example. This is his 9th season at Bayern. His first was 2015-16. If you count the one game Willy Sagnol was caretaker of the club after Carlo Ancelotti was fired, he has had 8 managers. So realistically, one game can't do too much, so we'll call it 7. How exactly as a player are you supposed to feel comfortable in a system, know the ins-and-outs of it, etc. if every other season you have a new coach? That is why I was so optimistic about JN, because I felt he was the long-term solution for Bayern. Ultimately, I think as I said earlier and as you brilliantly used it as an example Adrian, the Honigstein quote is so perfect. I obviously hope Bayern with the Bundesliga every year and every other competition, but to be honest I wouldn't mind if they lost it, especially if it forced them to look in the mirror and ask what they are doing, and hopefully they realize they need to bring someone in that can be a long-term solution for Bayern (Praying it would be Xabi Alonso)!! and to stick to that managers plan, while also continuing to build up the youth program because Bayern cannot financially compete with the English clubs, PSG, etc. (which, for additional detail, is also one of the specialties Christopher Freund was supposed to be brought in for). Thanks for the great videos Adrian, and Mia San Mia!

We change way to many styles because we have no other choice. And I bet its a pain in the ass for Touchel and everyone else. But pointing fingers on the coach wont make it better because the reality is different. Will be a rough patch, but we will get trough of it. And also its not like we lack of possession or chances. But its enough to give away one ball, and it can go all against us. And way to many individual mistakes are made by the top players. Way to many wrong balls, wrong passes, wrong touches. The pressure is just builds on them.

I really enjoyed your well-pondered ideas! In football, we tend to blame the manager for everything. I think the board is clearly putting Tuchel as a scapegoat when they are not backing Tuchel to bring his players (Kane, Guerreiro and Kim in; Mane, Pavard, Hernandez, Cancelo, Stanisic out, let alone de Ligt and Gnabry's injuries). They're not spending for a coach who's leaving in the end of the season. I don't think you can play in a high-press marking, rolling over your opponent when you have less than 8 players in the bench in half of the season. I also find hard to believe that Flick, Nagelsmann and Tuchel are to blame in Bayern and Germany, but the players are spared. Who's the next manager to deal with Sané's inconsistency or a spoiled Kimmich?

Tuchel is doing fine, he's a great manager and would win anywhere he goes. Same is true for Nagelsmann, who's sacking was ridiculous. Sometimes teams have an amazing season that makes you look a bit worse, and thats all this season is. This story, from last season, is just another example of rich clubs (thats owners and fans) panicking over the smallest thing and burning their house down accidentally in the process. With Chelsea being the exception, any period of success coincides with longevity. Klopp failed to win anything at Liverpool in hilarious fashion for years until the spending hit peak madness. Ferguson, we know that story already. And Cruijff had two seasons of nothing (no the cup winners' cup doesn't count) before winning anything. Van Gaal had the greatest Ajax tenure (imo) of all time, but it took him 3 years to win the league. Rich clubs are losing their minds, with owners panicking over temporary stock prices and fans worrying about people laughing at their club on the internet. Everybody needs to relax and actually enjoy football.

Guys fc bayern didn't score at allianz arena in buli since 4 years before werder. 4 YEARS More then 48 months. And everyone acts like its armageddon. So now you have an idea of the status and the expectations, which fcb has in germany and europe. If you ask the fans and the criticans, they are not allowed to lose. Never. Ever.

I’ve said it’s not necessary Bayern overly underperforming, just Lever going red hot at an unrealistic pace. And still, with Lever drawing last week, Bayern controls their own fate. Beat them and they’re first again.

Let's face it: the only thing making sense for Bayern is to sign Alonso, before any other club can and also accept that Leverkusen has the better tactics and the better squad. The other option is Alonso sign with another club, so Bayern has to sign Leverkusen players instead.

Bayern last year ar the same time had 7 points less. They are obviously better than last season. Only Leverkusen is just really having an insane season. Before Florian Wirtz had his ACL injury, leverkusen was top of the league. Now it's the same again. If Wirtz goes to bayern or leaves the Bundesliga in the summer, bayern will be in top again. I think, thats all it is

Is Wirtz the only reason Leverkusen are good? As a Liverpool fan, we're about to try to hire a new manager and Xabi Alonso seems to be the prime candidate. Did he just luck into a job where he had a team capable of winning the league but was just underperforming for a bit? You know, Xabi comes in with his smile and impeccable dress sense, knocks a few 50 yard passes on the training pitch, and the squad is transformed..

@@paulie-g He is not the only reason, but I think the Main reason. Two seasons ago Leverkusen was also on top and title candidate. Then Wirtz Tore His ACL and Leverkusen lost track. Next season without Wirtz, Leverkusen was even 18th in the League. Yes, Alonso was hired, but the big turnaround came when Wirtz made His Comeback. Not saying, that Leverkusen would be a Bad Team without him, but I definitely believe, they wouldn't be on top.

@@tobiass3540 What's your view on how much Xabi Alonso has to do with Leverkusen's performance? I'm a Liverpool fan and we, as you probably know, are about to have a managerial vacancy and, once we stop crying, will need to appoint someone

@@paulie-g xabi Alonso does a great Job and definitely contributes. He reaches the Players, and they are defensively rock solid. So I'd say He is a good Coach, as far as I can Tell. The reason I think Leverkusen wouldn't be on top without Wirtz ( they would still be candidates to qualify for the CL), is what I mentioned before. Wirtz as their number 10 obviously has a huge Impact on the Game, which you also See, when he doesnt Play. There definitely isna difference. Alonso is a good Coach. If He becomes the next Pep, remains to be Seen. Leverkusen Had the 3rd Most valuable Team in the Bundesliga when he took them over and they were in the title race and finsihed 3rd in the League after having a bad second half of the season, so it's not like he just transformed a mediocre team. Leverkusen is expected to be top 4 of the league more or less every season. I think Alonso is doing a good Job and I don't See a reason, why He shouldnt be successful at any other Club. But I also do believe that Wirtz is the real Game changer this season and perhaps the best number 10 in world Football rn

@@tobiass3540 Thank you very much for your input. The interesting thing about this is that the #10 is widely perceived to be 'dead' as a position in modern football. Clearly Alonso is taking advantage of the outstanding player at his disposal. I wonder how much of that is adaptation vs the way he genuinely wants to play. Because an orthodox #10 is going to get demolished in England. Yes, I've found the "he took over at Leverkusen when they were 17th and now they're top of the league" a bit.. misleading. It's true inasmuch as those are the facts, but it sort of elides the fact Leverkusen were an individually talented side, but were being managed badly (probably just a poor fit) and didn't have a proper achievement culture.

I see it this way: the team was not perfect under Nagelsmann but there was a promise of a "long term project" that I was bought into. Results did not need to be perfect if we were building for what was the 2025 CL in Munich. But Tuchel is not that long term project and had not made the team better, if anything it feels worse both in terms of the eye test and the feeling around the club, granted his results have not been terrible if you think about it. But the big thing is I think Tuchel is not a fit at Bayern and is slowly sinking and taking players out with him ie his fights with De Ligt, Kimmich, Davies, Goretzka, Muller, etc etc. I do think it would of been best if Nagelsmann never left but that is in the past atm Tuchel must be sacked just to salvage not the season but the atmosphere and the players for the next season. Would love to see Hansi till the end of the season just to ride the ship and see where we are
