What Is Victimhood? (The Scapegoat Mechanism)

What is blame? What happens when you assign responsibility to someone else, or to a group of people, and use that to inform how you treat them? What does scapegoating accomplish, and what is the root cause of tribalism?
Kevin examines philosopher René Girard’s Mimetic Desire and Scapegoat Mechanism concepts to unearth the very core of human behavior and how we function as a society. It all starts with babies imitating adults immediately out of the womb, and it ends with burning disco albums at a baseball game. Somehow that bizarre human journey all makes sense -- and you’ll know more about yourself and the world around you.

    I'm calling bullcrap on this video. If you take the time to watch this and accept it as if it is certainly true then you are admitting that nothing you do and say and think is anything but just an imitation of what you hear and have learned from only the people that you've been subjected to having met or heard your entire life and that it is inevitable that we will always encounter struggles amongst our peers only to have a primitive desire to want to take our pains out on them or even potentially harmless beings or individuals. Sure it all makes sense but how does that take in to account being actively critical of everything anyone says with the assumption that none of us have the means to knowing everything about what is "objectively" right and that discussion and thought can lead to new waves of cultures and new means of solving issues? It is in my opinion that this video could be potentially harmful for an audience member that has no desire of learning why people have any negative views on potentially dangerous or selfish people, groups, or ideologies and instead of wanting to try and help solve issues to make things better for everyone will merely shrug it off as nonsense and will ultimately leave themselves out from being able to grow and communicate for a productive cause for all.

    He never claimed we couldn't have original ideas, and said that the scapegoat mechanism could be quelled by learning about it and using reason. Our thoughts are certainly shaped by what we absorb, but as conscious beings, we hold control over our minds. Also, one comment was enough

    You may or may not have noticed, but the camera angle changed the entire feel of this video. The psychology behind putting yourself lower than someone else in physical space, adds a notion of empowerment to the person you are doing it to, because of this, I personally felt, kinda reassured or comforted by the conclusion rather than feeling small.

    Just a small point on Meltzoff's hypothesis; young children don't have a sense of 'object permanence' so when a mother closes her eyes, to a child (under 2 or so) the eyes just aren't there from the child's point of view. At that age, a child has no theory of mind, and cannot place any kind of association between what happens when they close their eyes and when the someone else does so. They do react differently when the mothers eyes are open, but this is due to an instinct to pay attention to a mothers eyes when they are there from the child point of view, not some understanding of a mothers intentions or experience. This is why young children can play peekaboo for what seems like forever. They are consistently surprised when you reappear out of what to them seems like nowhere. Also, the idea of desire not being innate, but an external force that can cause conflict was perfectly extolled in the 1984 movie The Gods must be Crazy.

    I am 100% a scapegoat. i learned that i was a scapegoat while isolated in a rehab facility for months with nothing else to do but read the same two books over and over. i read a book that stated something about scapegoats and it really spoke to me in a way i cant even describe. (i would have definitely lost my mind if i didn't have books to read while in rehab while isolated for so long from the rest of the world). i don't know how i did it, but i turned myself into a scapegoat by my own bad choices, and my family started blaming me for everything, friends stopped talking to me completely. kicked out of my house several times, even kicked myself out several times. and then one day i just decided to leave my family and friends and live the street life for a bit. banished myself in a way i guess. and i seen that my leaving, well, it united them. they seem so happy without me now, so i'm happy for them now. but, now i'm ALONE. x'D i am a disappointment to my family, and myself. now i just sit kinda .. sit here, mind and body wasting away, watching the sun burn and the clouds pass. i'm 19 years old and i feel like i'm 90 because of the path i took in life. tho, i'm still alive so i cant complain. anyway nobody is gonna read this. just decided to leave a bit of myself here. bye~ keep on keeping on internet people. ~

    Not sure where you get your definition from but in memetics a meme is usually described as a self replicating idea/ unit of culture whereas mimetics refer to the philosophical concept of imitation. If you want you can read up on memetics and where the term comes from on wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memetics If you are interested in the difference to Mimetics you can read the wikipedia article on mimesis as well: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimesis And I realize that memetics and mimetics are closely related as memes rely on imitation, but they are definetely not the same.

    This explains so much in my life... I have always always always been the scapegoat in every social system I've ever been in... and I've been banned from so many schools, online game guilds, online forums, and groups of people all my life. But I always knew it was them who had the problem rather than anything wrong with me. I finally have a name for it! Scapegoating.

    I've seen this many times in different social environments but never really understood it. My hypothesis was individuals with 'weaker' personalities mimicking the traits of more popular, dominant and charismatic members of the group to compensate for their lower position, and try to enhance their position in their social group. I've witnessed it in pairs of newly acquainted friends also, where one seems to slowly transform into the other. I find it fascinating but equally disturbing, and I'm convinced there is a correlation between this transformation of the self and having weak personality or little independence, as well as a desire for acceptance in a wider societal theatre, suggesting possible issues regarding anxiety/depression. This video makes so much sense, great watch.

    Gods a meme. Culture is a meme. Cultures change, theres always an earlier religion. Humans were sacrificed, then goats in the bible. You know because it opens saying not to sacrifice humans anymore. Stories are memes, they change over time like chinese whispers or the telephone game. Before the flood was the epic of gilgamesh's flood, contradictory yet nearly copied word for word for a significant portion of it. And even the epic of gilgamesh was not unique, and neither the one before that. Humanity started sacrifice after farming and sedentary lifestyle, which is when they developed dogma. Religion's core is violence.

    I love thinking about this concept of mimetic existence whenever I have to acknowledge sources of information. I always would wonder about writing a bibliography for a paper, or even something as unofficial as starting a sentence by disclaiming that you're about to relay information that you didn't experience first-hand. So much of how we learn and even the core of our ability to communicate comes from mimicking that we reach a point where we must walk a line between mimic and copy-paste, and I've always been interested in the gray area surrounding that line.

    I think there is one major flaw in Rene Girard's theory.. Yes, it is true that we gain almost all of our desires by seeing and imitating others. But we see many more people than we imitate. What determines who we decide to subconsciously imitate?

  • @MinecraftTestSquad

    @MinecraftTestSquad

    7 жыл бұрын

    4xdblack I would say those we understand better and deal with more personally. Parents, close friends, spouse. Then your average friend, coworker, and boss. It could explain how over time close friends will develop a similar laugh pattern when together, but with another friend you may have a different laugh, or another laugh when in public. I know when I'm laughing I sometimes realize as I'm laughing that it's not the same as with other people.

  • @4xdblack

    @4xdblack

    7 жыл бұрын

    MinecraftTestSquad that's a reasonable answer. Though that isn't necessarily always the case. Think of celebrities, such as Nicola Tesla, George R.R. Martin, or Adele. How many people have they inspired without ever directly affecting the lives of those people. Also, on the point of how friends develop similar laugh patterns.. I think that has less to do with a model/desire formula, and more along the lines of social conformity and acceptance. A subconscious effort to be more accepted by others by mirroring their actions.

    That was one of the best videos I've ever seen. I've been trying to figure out this human sacrifice problem for a long time and this totally sums it all up. We would all be wise to look deeply into the implications of the subjects that were brought up in this video.
