The scandalous confrontation of Riddick Bowe and Andrew Golota

Спорт

By the end of 1993, Riddick Bowe, nicknamed "Big Daddy," was doing poorly. There were no complaints about the boxing qualities of Bow. Eddie Futch worked on them, and Riddick himself was a talented fighter. The career of the famous heavyweight was brought down by the same man who brought him to the top - Rock Newman...

Man, that brings back a lot of memories. I was a kid in Poland rooting for Andrew. The whole country was staying awake deep into the night to watch his fights. It was such a disappointment when he DQ'd himself both those times with Bowe, and then to watch his losses against Lewis and Tyson (that one eventually declared NC). Andrew became deeply ingrained into the culture at the time and still remains something of an icon, of course a flawed one.

As a Brit I found myself at first bemused then laughing constantly at the antics of Cocknocker Golota, he had Bowe on toast in both fights then thought to himself "it's not enough to just destroy the man" and decided to start bowling for middle wicket. As for Bowe, he was always always over rated, what these commentators never mention is that little Herbie Hide knocked him down in that fight, a small dancing heavyweight knocked him down. What Lennox did to Andrew is about the same as what he would have done to Bowe, the clues were already there in the Olympic final which I also watched live, Bowe was genuinely terrified of Lennox.

Golota up to this fight was used to winning by a knockout in the first few rounds. He was outfighting Bowe, but Bowe could take punches without going down fast or throwing much back. So Golota grew frustrated because he wanted to finish it fast and go home. He was not used to a fight going full 12 rounds. It was simply an uncharted territory for him. He could have burned out. He may have felt the need to go to a bathroom. His wife may have called where he's been so late. Cops may have towed his car away at the expired parking meter. Golota anxieties and priorities.

Before the Klitchkos...Golota was the original "Beast from the East" - he had a legit badass reputation early in his career (before about 10 injuries reduced him to ordinary) - his excellent amateur career and his solid pro start with 25-0 record and beating the shit outta Doc Nicholson (who was supposed to be an Ali-style prodigy of Manny Steward) - he had huge strength - not the explosive style KO puncher but a heavy-handed, punisher-type. Lou Duva would punish his Heavyweights if they got lazy in the gym by making them spar with Golota. I read a story that Duva and David Tua got into a fight cause Duva was angry he was getting lazy and put a young Tua in with Golota to spar to teach him a lesson and Golota was kicking the shit outta him in front of everyone and Tua got mad (and maybe even walked out) His injuries by the age of 28 (back, knees, elbow, neck) reduced his physical attributes and he contended mostly on skill and experience for many years. But like Manny Steward said "Golota...is a loser" - he doesn't have that mentality to be a winner or a champion. He has severe anxiety and social problems - I know several people that knew Andrew and his circle (Golota even hit on my girlfriend at a Chicago club..nice!) and they all say the same thing - "He's actually shy, quiet and nice...but he's nuts and weird as hell...especially if he has a drink - he's gets drunk/strange after two drinks which is weird cause he is massive" Very enigmatic fighter with great flaws and great skills...a great edition to the 90s heavyweight scene. It's surprises so many young fight fans that Golota was favored over Lennox but the brutal beatings that he dished Bowe (who was considered the #1) was enough. I was at the same Polish buffet as Andrew (Bobaks in south Chicago) and he is one of the most physically intimidating guys I ever saw..I got the fuck out of his way (didn't ask for autograph.lol) - you'd swear he's 350lbs by his build and presence...just so menacing and intimidating.

He escaped to States to avoid jail sentence for assualt but years later received something called Iron Letter issued by President of Poland which cleared him from all the charges. In America he never meant to box, he wanted to be truck driver but couldnt find the job so he started boxing again....rest is a history.

I agree. Golota was a very talented boxer and during the Bowe fight, he was outboxing, outworking and brawling him. Unfortunately, for Golota, he could never control his temperament when things were going against him or he was hurt by a decent punch. He would fall apart mentally. He wasn't the fastest or most intelligent fighter, but he was always value for money, entertaining and was good enough to at least win a world title.

When Andrew Golota was not able to go low to the nuts, Lennox quickly nocked the daylight out of him in the first round and the game was over. To me, Golota kept going with hitting the nuts when fighting Bowe because he was afraid sooner or later Bowe was going to knock him down and wanted to weaken him. I wonder how many of the matches he won in his career were because he was using such illegal and mean punches to weaken his opponents. I have never seen anyone do that repeatedley in the history of boxing. What a coward he was.

Golota is explaining this saying he was nearly unconscious because of tiredness and fight rush, which I do not believe. Boxing is dirty in the ring and most of all out of the ring and we will never know the truth. BTW do you think Tyson has no heart and character? He bit people's ears, using headbutts, doing brawls in the ring as routine. Not mentioning he is a rapist.

The Polish Army used to feed Walnuts to the troops, and Golota became expert at nut smashing. Golota also learned to Box in the Army and it was allowed to punch low to the nuts to disable the enemy. Even as a Pro Boxer Golota's primary instinct and endless training took over and he used his combination punches to smash the nuts until obliterated.

I always had high regard for Lewis and that first round knockout of Golota was pretty cool. He knew that Golota was going to go low, so he probably trained to take him out early. After the fight, you can see how much emotion Lewis had. Bowe had words with Lewis, as shown in the clip, but you don't make a mockery of boxing with that low blow stuff. Just wondering why Bowe didn't go low too. I guess that's why there has to be some sort of control over whether a guy like Golota can fight professionally, with this nasty way of fighting. That was a 3 combination punch to the Bowe's genitals in the 2nd fight. Really messed up.

Agree if it had taken place when it should have done it would have been a tough one to call

Was this originally in another language and translated into English? It usually sounds OK but there are a few terms and phrases that seem out of place.

I was speaking of Golotta and I totally with you about Bowe. He was one of the most talented heavyweights you will ever see but after he got rich he got lazy as hell. With that being said at his best Bowe would get his ass whooped by Lennox Lewis.

when i was younger i lived in this place that was literally explained to me as ziggy world. the place was apparently owned by golota's manager, jersey city, near a gym and some baseball fields. I asked if i could install a deadbolt and he introduced me to golota and said i didn't need any security, cause that was my security. To be fair, i never got broken into. giant dude.
