    I think that her aegyo persona really disarms a lot of people. Sunny's tough as nails. Don't forget, prior to coming to Korea, she was a war refugee. She had some awful experiences as a child and it does come through at times - not just during fireworks and other explosions which she finds traumatising and other members have to cover her ears, but she is very quick to stand up for herself and others and pull the sleeves up and get hard and unpleasant tasks done without complaint.

    I feel like that guy who tried to take an idol off stage should have gotten a harsher punishment. If you are old enough to be in university, than you are old enough to know not to try and kidnap someone off a stage. I feel like they should have at least reached out to his university and had him kicked out of school for that kind of behavior. I'm glad they didn't publicize who it was or press charges, because I feel like that wouldn't help him become a better person (and would probably permanently ruin his life). But I do think he deserved far more than a slap on the wrist. I do question how security let him get that close to the stage, though. All these stories remind me of what happened not too long ago to Wang Yibo (Chinese Idol). Fans stalked him to his hotel, so he started sleeping in a car with his bodyguard nearby instead. Unfortunately, they found him anyway and attacked him in the car while he was trying to sleep.

    Wang Yibo had to sleep in a car because of those people?! My God! He can't even get a proper sleep! I also remember that one time his car is getting chased by those people, and he had to roll down his window and shout at them to stop chasing him. This has nothing to do with sasaengs. I was immediately reminded of what Xiao Zhan had to go through. Especially after the AO3 incident😣. He can't even go out without people hating on him and his fans, saying it's his fault for not lecturing his fans. And now AO3 has been shut down in China.

    it's, I think, one of the uglier sides of a culture. every culture is different which is fine but with East Asian, especially Korean culture, it's currently less progressive in its treatment of women. and if you're an idol, you're not taken very seriously or treated with much respect outside of the entertainer bubble, and even then.. before people come for me for being racist, I'm Asian myself. I don't have all the knowledge and I don't want to make blanket statements but for the context of this video: schooling and therefore securing a good job is extremely valued (highly competitive in Korea and Japan) so it's unfortunately not surprising that at the time this happened, they let a grown man off because he "deserves a future," meanwhile Taeyeon for all we know was highly affected. the debacle showed that little to no repercussions will come of acts like this. they downplayed it by saying he's just a regular guy. the interviewee said he "showed his love in a different way" and hopes he'll put his fanaticism in a brighter direction, which tells me the obvious: companies don't care about their employees as long as they keep clients happy, even if the "clients" are terrible. here, that means compliance and allowing and sometimes even encouraging this type of behaviour. if it's punished or stricter laws are put in place, that's less money, bad press, and loss of potential fans down the grapevine. intense fan culture is the root basis for K-pop and these companies know this and want it, but that comes at a cost that's collateral in their eyes or a hazard of the job to be swept under the rug. the only reason some are finally publicly standing up for the groups they manage is because it looks good in a socially-conscious time and it being such a rarity for charges or boundaries to be put forth by companies. security is still pretty crap across the board, too, so it's clearly performative in many cases. K-pop was partially created as a form of soft power for Korea and its GDP. and it worked. it's a good formula until it's not. idols are meant to be just that - idolized, and so you won't see the 'real them' or much of it which creates a big problem not only with fans blindly defending them and creating impossible standards for the idols and fans, but with people thinking they know them in a parasocial manner or wanting to know them personally at whatever cost. since they're idols, they can't really show their human side and express complexities, defend themselves, tell people to f off, establish clear boundaries, or be rude when necessary because of expectations and reputation. the times they've spoken up, it brings a mountain of shame from defensive fans feeling betrayed and non-fans telling them to suck it up; idols' statements/requests are also always worded so carefully and nicely because they predict backlash that it doesn't deliver the impact needed. fansites have cameras on them at all times so even when they're off the job, they're still on it. that not only means they're filmed much of their day but that some fansites (not all) consort with sasaengs and gossip/word spreads fast if you piss any of them off. this obviously brings a multitude of problems. similarly, some groups make most of their money by ginormous bulk-buys and gifts/donations which means they're at the mercy of these "fans" in order to keep their group and/or company going. these fans then feel entitled to their idols or think that they should feel no shame in wanting them on strings because of this. it's all so messy and unfortunate tbh. there's small improvements happening but things need to change. sorry for the essay lol

    I had the chance to interview an ex sasaeng. I don’t remember much because I deactivated my Twitter(which had everything), but I still have this quote written down in my google docs. “I know there are a lot of people that hate me for who I was but trust me there’s nobody that hates me for it as much as myself” I’m gonna be honest, I started crying halfway through the interview because it’s sad. I remember her saying that before she became a sasaeng, she thought of sasaengs as bad people. When she was a sasaeng, she saw them as potential friends. Now, after she quit, she views them as lost souls. She had said that most of the sasaengs she met had mental health problems and used being a sasaeng as a way to escape from their problems. I think sasaengs are bad people, yes, but I also think that they just need some help. She also advised to not expose sasaengs to large amounts of people as it will just create more sasaengs. This can also be said with sh/ed accounts as well. I wish everyone were to be happy and healthy.

    Having seen several people turn into sasaengs, it is sad to watch them. The ones I knew weren't to the super creepy weird stage but they did do things like: make major life decisions based around the idol, decide what neighborhood to live based off of where the idol lived at the time (I guess hoping they could run into them at the convenience store??? Idk), stalking on personal days, getting a stuffed animal doll that looked like the idol and taking it around Seoul on "dates", endangering their personal health to wait outside in negative temps for hours just to be first in line to meet the idol, stalking (in person and online) other fans to make sure they weren't "higher" than themselves...I still think the sasaengs are bad people in a manner of speaking but they are also incredibly lost and its just sad how far they've gone with the delusions in their minds.

All these stories are scary and the fact that these people are risking their life to make and produce music for their fans is absolutely insane. Being a kpop idol or just an idol for instance it's scary

  • @lovenala1987
    @lovenala19873 жыл бұрын

    Disclaimer: I am not talking about every fan. I am well aware that every fan is different and there are many sane fans who know their boundaries/limitations when it comes to respecting their idols. However, I just wanted to roughly summarise how the general kpop fan culture looks like, when it comes to the sasaengs and delusion fans, in general and how every fan acts a certain way when they first enter kpop. Please don't take this personally. It is not meant to offend anyone except for the sasaengs maybe because I could care less about those people. Okay now here goes- The sad thing is the kpop industry thrives on the whole "idols are products for fans" analogy, with the way they are trained, produced (musically), on how they have to act. Of course, I am aware that the idols are not at fault and how they behave is also what they sincerely feel at times. However, as rookies, they have to first garner attention and how that attention gets garnered is when the members or soloists show themselves to be available for the fans, if you know what I mean. It could be through words or through actions but the more they act a certain way as rookies, the more support they get. It's not just the idols that are taught and conditioned to act a certain way while singing, during variety, with fans but even the fans are conditioned to consider these idols as their own, even though that shouldn't be the case. Hence we have dating bans in the first place and how many fansites shut down when their favourite idols get married or start dating. There are types of fans that just talk about their fantasies with their idols through comments, fanfics, etc and that is mostly minor. It is mostly done in every pop culture fandom and not just in kpop. However, people keep it to their private spaces unless some of them go out of control and it reaches their idols/celebrities themselves (for example, how 1D got to know their members being shipped, fanfics being written and what not). Now that isn't a kpop idol group but that case is actually quite relatable to the kpop idols. One cannot say none of the kpop idols know about their own fanfics. It is usually harmless to the idols and with age, fans grow and get out of that zone or explore wider and rich topics. The other types are those that end up stalking and hurting the idols, for their love. And I think every kpop fan must have heard about the numerous sasaeng cases happening from 1st generation idol days. In this comment, I think I have simplified and summarised stuff a lot but of course, the kpop industry and fan culture isn't limited to what I have said. Yes, bad apples would exist in every entertainment/media/etc fandoms and it isn't just limited to kpop. However, the extreme lengths that some of these bad apples go to, isn't something you always hear for various other industries slot and that's because, the kpop industry works much more differently than others. I think for a fan to realise that "this oppa/unnie/noona/hyung - is not mine" is tough because of the blinding glimmer of the kpop content. Only with time and mistakes, people can see where their boundaries are but sadly, that ain't gonna happen quickly. There is more to this then what I have just written but I hope, I managed to make some people ponder on this topic.

    With Sasaseng sometimes there is an underlying Mental Illness like Anxiety or Depression and this obsessive devotion is a way to keep those feelings at bay. Other times it's not so much that the person is a Sasaeng becuese of some kind of obsessive devotion it becomes a way to make money. As some Sasaeng become what amounts to Information Brokers for other Sasaeng selling Idol's personal information for money online. The scarier ones more than the ones who attempt kidnapping are the ones who have been able to get into the Entertainment Industry in some capacity.

    I was so confused watching the first ep of American Hustle life. I get that they wanted the boys to be in a serious mindset but scaring the shit out of them by 'kidnapping' them was really not the way to go. You could see just how scared the boys were and, even though they actually handled the situation pretty well, they shouldn't of had to go through that (and no one should). even though I really loved the show and really loved watching one of the moments that really set the boys up for stardom, there was so much little things that were just wrong but were dismissed- The fake kidnapping being one of them (and let's not get started on the discrimination of certain members by certain people because we'd be here all day). Just because it's supposed to be a show where the boys were supposed to learn about how to deal with the harsher world and how to go about being successful (in a nutshell), doesn't mean they should of let the boys go through what could of been a scarring and mortifying experience. Thank you for listening to my tedtalk.

    I feel like most sassengs have some illnesses which they want to escape from. They resort to methods like these so that they could distract themselves from the pain. They are lost without a direction. Although I'm not saying that being a sasseng is not wrong, it definitely is. When they love the idols, they used the wrong way to show it. Loving someone is right but stalking them, even going to the extent of kidnapping them is just wrong. I hope that they seek proper help and when they quit, they would not hate themselves for the problem s they have caused

    Those kidnapping pranks are so fucking cruel. I feel like it would almost be more traumatizing to find out it was fake, like knowing people you work with and trust are willing to cause you major distress just so people can laugh at it on some TV show. So humiliating.
