The dumbest part of the H.O.T/Sechskies fan feud is that the groups themselves didn’t start it. It was started by the media and their companies, then spread to the fans. When Sechskies debuted, H.O.T was super excited because they thought they were going to have friends who would understand what it’s like to be an idol. The only actual negative interaction between the two groups was a misunderstanding between Heejun and Jiwon. But the members have been close since disbandment with Heejun/Jiwon supporting each other and Jaeduk/Tony living together and scheming to combine both groups. Even though Sechskies knew they were supposed to be H.O.T’s rivals, H.O.T considered NRG and Taesaja to be bigger threats. Also, Woohyuk and Jaeduk were friends pre-debut. Also tbh, Reply 1997 is full of inaccuracies of both groups. It features music, images, and events that didn’t happen until after the 90s timeline in the show. So, take it with a grain of salt.

  • @emmakirton

I still think it's crazy H.O.T considered NRG to be their actual rivals. Fans today don't really remember NRG but it's cool that arguably the number 1 boy group at the time saw them as a threat.

  • @ruiqiumai323

@@emmakirton NRG were no joke at debut. Jaewon and Woohyuk went to get extra training (I believe it was some kind of martial arts training because Jaewon was familiar with it) before their 3rd album because they felt like they would have struggled to compete with NRG otherwise. NRG were also good friends with a lot of major groups at the time, including H.O.T and Shinhwa.

I always hate when people say fanwars have gotten worse. People have just always been terrible. Same with the internet in general, before there were dms people would send hate mail old school style. Like there is just a certain type of human that exists to be toxic and they are in every fandom/interest/hobby etc, kpop and non-kpop. It's easy online because people can make fake accounts and be anonymous. Just ignore it truly, report it and dont interact. Follow accounts that aren't sitting there arguing all day. Fire feeds fire, only by depriving it of oxygen can you kill it. Same goes for internet hate. I feel like so many people in the younger generation have never heard 'dont feed the troll'. Dont give attention and make sure you have a non-tolerance on your end. Call out your co-fandom, friends, etc. Giving into fan wars and becoming toxic yourself isn't winning.

I would visit Korea from time to time with my older brother who works in Korea and go to the concerts . During SNSD's Black Ocean , I heard many horrible curse words , calling them with ugly names . They are actually people who secretly brings stones ( putting in plastic cups , painting small rocks like sugar rock candy ) and throw to stage , but other people got hit. If someone else says something about it then it’s their problem for making assumptions about the fandom based off a couple loud assholes. Buuut that being said it’s sad that we do have the ignore it. Unfortunately I find that there’s only a couple people in most communities I’m part of that I actually connect to, while the rest are very gate-keeping or toxic (this isn’t just for k-pop). I wish people realized that it’s literally just music. For some reason music fans of all genres tend to be the most toxic fans :/

It's kind of fascinating how different pop culture fandoms are in South Korea versus US. Even during the height of the boy band craze in the US we didn't have this type of extreme behavior; you could like who you wanted, however many you wanted. I think part of it is because people who feel little control over their lives will cling to something they can control. In the case of South Korea, these fans would largely be students and pretty much everyone knows by know how different the education system is there. Add in inflammatory media articles, and you get this craziness.

Tbh, if Dalshabet and B1A4 (especially B1A4’s fans. They should’ve been respectful grrr) fans just get on with their lives and didn’t act petty abt their Collab stage, Dalshabet would’ve won tons of awards, music show wins and have been one of 2nd Gen’s Well-known GGs.

These fanwars are one of the factors why I left the K-Pop fandom in July 2021, after being a fan of 9 years. And the fact that fans go after fans outside these fanwars too (certain comments about someone's opinion et cetera), I'm done. The toxicity within the fanwar has increased over the years and even the second gen fandoms are getting even more toxic over the years. An example. In 2020, I recieved death threats from Shawols who later said I deserved them. They were leaving horror comments about Hongbin, a former VIXX member, and I tried to warn this fandom about their comments. I told them that if they wouldn't stop, I was going to be terrified that Hongbin would take his own life like Jonghyun did. I would never use his situation for my own benefit and it was them that I recieved serious death threats, which still haunt me until this day.

I have never understood about Fan wars and Anti fans. I mean what is the point of this? Fan Wars between different groups is childish. If you like a group then support and love the group, Why do you have to bring other groups down? If you don't like a certain group then all you have to do is not listen or just wait until your Idols group comes on. It just that simple. Also, What the point of being Anti Fan? If you don't like a certain group then that fine because we all have different taste in music. Everyone opinion about good music is different, we are all not going to like the same thing. There is no point in spreading hate. Instead of being Anti Fans of a group, Why don't they put that time and energy into a group they like so that it can grow and share the love? I can't understand why we can't just share the love for each group rather the fight over who is better.

While I'd argue that a Kpop Fandom acting like a street gang would be worse. The thing with modern Fan Wars, it's that "The Internet is forever" so a group or a member of a group can be accused of something and even if its veracity is shown to be false. You have bad-faith actors who will latch on to accusations to shame groups or poison the minds of others against groups. With no real way to fight against it. I mean I can remember some Goldeness I interacted with on SNS talking about how despite the fact that they were a small peaceful fandom people would come after Golden Child for no apparent reason. Or there can be controversies that have been resolved and either because certain people won't let the issue drop or it becomes something that can get dredged up to attack the group. After a point, I think one has to think how important is this really and does my investing time or thought into fighting online about this. does that really benefit the group I support? Although the internet does have its positives when Nancy from Momoland was the subject of someone grossly violating her privacy. Other fandoms went out of their way to protect and defend her this is one of the reasons even though I'm not a Once I'll always stick up for Twice. As Onces had Nancy's back when something horrible happened. So The Internet is a mixed bag while it connects us in ways once thought impossible it can also give rise to the worst and most priggish and censorious parts of people's personalities as well. I'm a little sad to hear there was a "fan war" between Cassies and Pinkies as Fin.K.L. is my Ult Group and fighting over a color is so trivial if one reflects upon it for more than a second.

Fan wars really do go back so damn far and people think it’s just now bad, within the last 4 years or so?? I disagree.. but also, fan wars aren’t “handled” by cancel culture as that does absolutely nothing good. Cancel culture is completely toxic as heck. Fan wars and the like have done more in making idols disappear or retire early, cancel culture literally doesn’t cancel anyone, or make them disappear honestly. Tho you could say it’s the same thing but with some differences and both are unnecessary and unacceptable. What info I did learn was the balloons, that I did not actually know about. And now it’s difficult for groups to have a dedicated color cuz there are only so many colors for the amount of groups that keep coming out! It’s insane, fan wars are just horrible. Makes zero sense and fans of these groups just keep it going by acknowledging it the way they do.. it’s not helpful and can lead it to making your fave groups look bad. Kpop has been wild for so many years and I just had no idea! As far back as the 90’s, it’s just truly insane.

Every kpop fandom is like a bee hive. The groups are like the trees honey bees build their hives upon and as fandoms grow, their hives and the population in said hives get bigger and more advanced. When different fandoms interact with each other normally, they recognize each other as bees. But if a fandom keeps attacking another fandom they are essentially wasps attempting to destroy a hive.
