The Sandown Clown

In 1973, two young children vacationing at Lake Common would encounter a strange being. A strange being that hasn’t been seen since. This is the story of the Sandown Clown.

I was lucky enough to visit the Isle of Wight during Cowes week in 1976 as a sixteen year-old army recruit taking part in an off-shore sailing expedition. It's a beautiful place with friendly locals and nice pubs (I was under-age but a military ID works wonders when challenged), unfortunately I didn't meet any aliens. This is a wonderful story though and like you I was a little concerned when the children took Sam up on his offer to go inside his hut. I think Sam was probably an eccentric but harmless person just living off the grid, children love magic tricks and he's just entertained them for a short time with the berry trick. My own children loved being amused by my own clumsy attempts at the same. Thank you for telling this story, it's brought back some very happy memories.

If you wrote this down exactly as is and told me it was a story by the Greek-French Surrealist poet, Gisele Prassinos, an outtake from her book, The Arthritic Grasshopper, for instance, I would absolutely believe it. It is eerie, sinister, surreal, Gothic, absurdist, Fortean and fey (as in, of the faery folk) and very "British" or Anglo-Celtic. I love it.

One thing that always intrigued me about this story is why the children even asked “Sam” if he was a ghost? That would be my main question if I had the chance to interview the now adult individuals. They saw him during the day, and he obviously had solid form. What they described doesn’t even remotely correspond with the archetype of a ghost as children would imagine it. What they encountered, presuming the story is correct, was much more a description of a clown seen through children’s eyes. Yet, they were convinced that “Sam” was a ghost. So where did that idea emerge from? Children do have vivid imagination- yes. However, their story and description is so intricate and complex that I find it difficult to believe that they concocted the entire meeting and synchronizing it to match each other’s statements.

@@NoMeGusta2526 I somehow doubt that. When retelling the story to her dad Fay used the word “clown” to describe “Sam”. The way both children described him was far more a description of a clown than the stereotypical ghost. The only thing I can imagine may have had an influence was the sound, but then again the children described it as a siren, as from an ambulance.

I watched this story elsewhere but, as with other happenings, your versions always reveal new details. You are most thorough with researching and explaining. I’m not sure if other sources either don’t pick up or they don’t think the details are important. But I feel it’s best to be as faithful as possible to all the known facts and theories. For one example I didn’t know much about the location and for some reason just assumed that it was the backyard of their farm (in other channels). Also I didn’t know that the father’s experiences happened 3 years earlier. It’s good that you mentioned the double-delusion as a footnote.

Just wow! The amount of detail in this story by these kids, especially describing how Sam looked, is really interesting. My sense is that if these two kids made up this story I doubt that they would have given that amount of detail. Coupled with Fay's Dad and his seperate experience this story is one heck of head scratcher. I wonder if either of those two kids are alive as they'd be in their 50's, have either of them said anything about this incident as adults? That would be intersting. Bottom line - I have no idea as to whether or not it's a true depiction of what happened.

I wonder if the children had been eating wild mushrooms, possibly influenced by a parent who might forage as well? Foraging was a lot more commonplace back in those days, my family would do it and I still do. I'm really careful around mushrooms, but did make a mistake once, and have been doubly careful ever since! If you think about the description of Sam, and then the description of gnomes (claimed by some to be the manifestations concocted by the consumption of particular types of mushroom), you start to see some similarities - the report of bright colours for features and clothes for instance. The hut could have been a mushroom-induced exaggeration of a workman's hut, also more common in those days. 2 workmen had been knocking in posts, and they would have moved on by the time any parent had checked out the area afterwards. And Sam indeed was one of those workmen, maybe a third in the party, a foreman come to check on how the other 2 were getting along. If Sam had been an alien, and that was the sort of disguise he felt sufficient to fool a human, he hadn't been very observant of our ways, had he? I think an advanced race could do better.

Children and race and specific locations always brew the events. Watching a Human form, in an isolated area, jump and briefly levitate....yes, childhood may cause memories. A shared psychosis, transmitted between people, SURE describes most of reality.

I will say that personally, I don't think whatever those kids were saying ain't true,as the matter of fact, I would like to believe that... though kids are very imaginative, when it comes to reality and fantasy, they do know the difference between both sides. The more weird stories that come from children, the more close to the truth it would be to me...based on experiences also, honestly, I couldn't find any of the story told by those kids who were in my own experiences to be inaccurate, almost true to every words that they said with a bit of exception, mainly to those who still haven't yet develop their vocabularies due to very young ages.... Other than that, can't yet find any story from any kid was added something. As an adult with sound mind, I believe I'm not alone in this statement.

Personally, I have two thoughts of this story. The children might’ve encountered a disfigured man with [harmless] mental issues that may have been plagued with bullying his whole life and took to donning clothes that would hide most of the disfigurement, and why he’d be afraid of people. Something in the symbrachydactyly or other malformations. Or the children, I hate to say this, may have accidentally stumbled into a pocket of released gas from the swamp or fumes, I mean, they did see workmen and assumed they were there repairing a post…in their eyes. I know this explanation seems far fetched, but…then again, so does the children’s story. It seems the girl was doing most of the talking, which I assume could be in spurts of excitement with inadvertent suggestive undertones as to have the boy agree with her story, as they asked the boy and he possibly couldn’t answer quickly as an excited Fay so Fay filled in his gaps for him for example Fay: “remember, how Sam…” or “Sam was very….right?” Or “show them what Sam did” type of suggestive explanation. I mean, at their first encounter and wanting to run, the boy ran without a second thought to Fay, basically leaving her behind. The boy obviously wasn’t the leader out of the, two.
