Tatis is more valuable than Soto. Better athlete too. Soto & Snell both came on strong when it was way too late to help. Pads could not move runners or steal bases. If they could do either they would have scored more runs. Baseball 101 was not a priority. Bunting was rare and poorly executed when attempted. Talent was not the problem, execution of simple basics. I’m a long time Padre fan worked at The Murph selling Popcorn/ Cracker jacks/ Cokes and ice cream. The 80’s were totally Fun 😃

Agree. Tatis and Kim and Snell, the rest can go. I don't care.

The ultimate fail was the 1 and 12 record in extra innings. Arizona went to the postseason with only 2 more wins than us. That totally bizarre failure was the difference maker. If we'd have just underperformed at a meager 5-8 in extras, we'd have been in the playoffs easily.

@@rayfinkle9369 ..great point ..then ..factoring that in ..would Melvin still be our skipper? ..don’t need to answer that but suffice to say that the 23 season was a great disappointment ..

@@freedomtrucker2332 You'd have to think so. Unless there was a real desire for him to be back in the bay area.
SD is going to weigh their options and do what’s best for the organization…problem for those of us on the outside is we have NO IDEA what the state of the organization is. What we do know is that they had to borrow eight-figures to ostensibly make payroll. They have a lot of very questionable contracts. If they can get their finances in order they keep Soto. If they cannot afford anymore than what’s already on the books then trade him away for cheaper prospects. If their financial house is completely on fire then…fire sale.

@@DugoutDiaries IF, and it’s a huge if, this AND they land Yamamoto then you’ve added approximately $100M to the annual player payroll. That’s roughly what was freed up at the end of the season with expiration of contracts. But Boss Hal won’t want to spend any more than that. Bellinger’s out. Margot’s out. Maybe see who the Twinkies will take for Kepler’s final season under contract?
As a Padres fan I say keep Soto by any means necessary.

@@boomingtx tatis's contract is very team friendly in terms of AAV, despite the length. he's the keeper between him and Soto
"Jeff Passan saying one thing, Jon Heyman saying the complete opposite" Gee, which one of these two has more credibility?
Ironic a Jays fan criticizing the Padres for being confusing and disappointing. Pot meet Kettle.
Soto only came on AFTER the season was lost ..all you see are his finished numbers ..very little clutch time hits from this guy when it mattered ..further ..in my opinion..paying these outrageous numbers for player contracts is ruining the game and teams that get stuck when players mail it in ..every contract should be incentive based ..

That's how I felt about Snell. Dude only shows up during second half and wins cy young
Trading Soto is definitely going to hurt, but with a wider view of the situation it is the wise and best thing to do. Outside of signing Ohtani - who could pay for nearly half of his salary in revenue generated from Japan and abroad - the Padres CAN NOT afford another $30 million plus/year contract (and Soto will likely get $40 million/year from someone). Therefore, trading Soto is the SMART thing to do business-wise and baseball-wise. I think we will be surprised what return the Padres can get. I can see the Yankees sending them Spencer Jones, Michael King, Clark Schmidt, and 1 or 2 more prospects. We shall see.
As a Padres fan, I think every possibility is on the table. I think Preller's preference is to keep Soto because he pushed for this trade, but it doesn't appear that Preller has the autonomy that he did before Peter Seidler became gravely ill. I think the current chairman Kutsenda is driving the "Trade Soto" bandwagon so he's probably going to win this battle, but I think they are prepared to go into the season with him if the deal isn't right.
I think they should trade him
They gone play hard for the late Mr Seidler
The blue jays today background is being used. Love the videos you post. Will there be any livestreams for big signings or will just blue jays today have livestreams?
How does 82 wins with Soto make them competitive? Sure, they played the Phillies in the NLCS the year before. But that was then. To me, the big thing is them having to borrow money to make payroll. Doesn't make them look good. If families overspend, they cut back on groceries, Netflix, Amazon, etc. Padres are going to have to do the same thing.
Here’s some advice…..believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear.
I'm from SD and don't care if Soto goes. Tatis and Kim at the two I watch for and Snell and Darvish would be my fav pitchers. The rest can all go, honestly.
Keep that guy, he was the best player on the team. I understand it's a business, ears are always open. I hope he stays in SD though.

Tatis has a claim to best player as well. Far better defender and base-runner than Soto is. Won a GG playing a new position to him.
You really didn’t address the financial issues the Padres have. They had to borrow $ 50 million in September to cover payroll and other short-term expenses and were counting on making the playoffs to offset that. Also MLB had to take over broadcasting their games because of financial issues with Bally Sports and Diamond Sports a loss of $ 60 million in revenue for the team. Add in the death of their owner and they probably don’t have the financial resources for a $200 million plus payroll.
Trading him at the deadline gets you very little. He’s not going to sign an extension one year from free agency, unless it has an opt out in two years. He’s a hard guy to trade when it’s assumed he’s going back on the market in a year. Yankees are linked to him but I wouldn’t give Dominguez and another prospect for a guy you can’t guarantee you’ll sign. I hope he stays in San Diego.
We went to the playoffs without Soto, Bogaerts and Tatis. We don't need Soto to go to the playoffs. We should trade him for young pitching. Machado, Tatis, Bogaerts and Kim is a solid core.
Keep him and trade X and rid of that huge contract and turn that into Soto’s contract
Soto would fetch a haul for sure. The Padres should really be better than they are
Trade him to the Toronto Blue Jays 👀
His future is in a Mets uniform. The other super high (highest) payroll team that had a miserable 2023.
You could get a ton for soto, if they actually can’t afford it then I think you do it
The truth is RETURN. If the reply is "We will not give you crazy value for a rental" then the answer is as follows. Soto had tons of value for the Padres. They want to win +6 games with Tatis playing +20 games, and hope to get in with Soto. Side note: Shohei Ohtani could solve all the problems the padres have including payroll. New TV deal and Ads galore.
Nobody cares if Soto goes or stays. The Padres still not winning a damn thing 😂
Padres are definitely in a limbo lol
I don't think you are anyone to talk seeing as the Blue Jays are trash
