True definition of a martyr. He knew what would happen, and didn’t care. Like the man said “if I can bring someone closer to god, then I gladly suffer”… such a powerful and meaningful message.

I'm constantly fascinated by the stories of heroic deeds that took place during WW2, in the concentration camps in particular. Further proves you can't kill the human spirit and the will to show compassion is as powerful as anything. What a man this was to do such a deed for someone he did not know

That is what God did and asked His Son Jesus to be the sacrificial lamb that the enemies of God might be saved and transformed. Forgive them Father, they know not what they do.

No unnecessary homilizing in this film, and as far as I can see a duly diligent attention to historical facts - the number on Kolbe's uniform, the apparently accurate use of red triangles sewn onto the uniforms of Kolbe and his fellow-prisoners. So the arresting SS guys (indicated by the skull at the head) had no shoulder pieces. The first guy had no collar tabs at all, but the second had those of the Wehrmacht. This "Kommandant" seems to have the shoulder pieces of a major but the collar tab of a lieutenant (Wehrmacht equivalent of the SS rank). He has an blank green sleeve band. The only green SS-sleeve band was for "East Turkish Waffenverband of the SS". No commandant of Auschwitz was ever commander of an SS foreigner unit afaik. The medal appears to be the service award of the NSDAP, which was only permitted as a ribbon on the small medal bar or in this type on the big medal bar over the breast pocket. In 1941 I don't think that wearing a swastika arm band within the uniform code. Praise to Kolbe though!

Hee hee I have surrendered all my Plenary Indulgences to the Virgin Mary....to give away as she pleases !!! Not boasting here but my 24 patron saints have helped me release from Purgatory/save earthly souls from damnation.. Just saying and giving glory God

In the graphic novel Maus by art Spiegelman when his Vladek father first came to Auschwitz he was crying, and in despair, a Catholic priest came up to him. And using his number is on his arm, convinced him, he would survive this, and he said this brought him a new life within him as his number is total 18 the Hebrew number of life. And whenever things went bad later, he looked his arm and said yes, the priest was right. It tolls 18.
