The Saddest Flash Game Ever

Ойындар

With the entire world overcoming the COVID pandemic, it reminded me of a classic Flash game called “One Chance” that many players, including I, may not have fully appreciated many years ago, given our young and immature worldview. Now, I want to return and explore this game, one for a trip down memory lane, and second, to understand why this game remains such a fantastic example of how a simple game can become an artistic masterpiece.

Same here! When I was younger, I didn't realize that the title itself was delineating the nature of the ending - you only have one chance to do things! I thought the game was broken and it became so annoying for my little-kid mind back then, which I suppose contributed to its long-lasting impact for me.

It's a bit of a cheaty game too. If you try anything besides work, at any one point - You get one of the terribad endings. At the day where the boss told me to go home, I did and spent the night with the family hoping it would cheer up the mood. Also you do need rest to work more efficiently. But I got the bad ending regardless, where at the finaly day going to work Molly dies in the floor. I felt extremely cheated. "That one 'mistake' ruined it all".

I feel like there were surprisingly many sad games like this made between 2010 and 2017 that made you feel alone and not in control. I remember watching Markiplier play presentable liberty in 2016 and feeling devastated by the ending. Recently I remembered the game and searched it up to look for secrets or an alternative ending of some kind. Instead I found out that Robert Brock took his own life in 2018. To me games like these feel more like a glimpse in the mind of their author rather than just sad and shocking content which is why I will always keep occasionally remembering and coming back to replay or at least rewatch them. .

Obviously, we don't know if they came back out after John finds the serum, but there's got to be somebody else other than John and Molly who survived. You could probably also just delete whatever cookies the site had saved, but I'm not sure if that actually worked or not since I never tried it. With flashpoint, the game files and runtime environment are all on your own computer, so in that case you can just delete the save if it's even a separate file or redownload the game which even for the crappy centurylink DSL that I'm stuck with, it only took around 30 seconds for substantially bigger flash games. for clarity my download speed was at best 2 megabytes / sec, although it should've been somewhere within 3 to 3.5 megabytes / sec. They could still live off non-perishable goods like canned foods and other preserved goods. The setting is evidently modern, and considering there's no need for competition since everyone's dead except him and his daughter, scavenging through somewhere like a local supermarket would be pretty easy to keep John and his daughter fed. It won't be a healthy diet, but they won't starve. Still is a pretty miserable existence, nonetheless.

I got the same ending, the first time i played this like a decade ago. Nice to see I wasnt the only one who got a traumaticly depressing feeling from this game. Even if you spend all your time working, instead of trying to live up what time you have left, its a bittersweet ending at best as although you saved yourself and your daughter. However your wife, all your friends, for the most part your lifes work, and 99.9999 percent of humanity(and if theres less than 500 people in the world after the end then it doesnt matter regardless because theres not enough genetic diversity for humans to continue) are all dead, and to top it all off you are probably carrying around the burden that its your fault for the rest of your life. All because I thought it would be okay to show the daughter the fate of the mother, idk. At that moment I thought that it was better to show her the truth rather than lying. Or some cringe thing like that. I tried resetting it to change the ending to try and save the child, but all I saw was the protagonist, alone, in the bench. Knowing that my decision couldn't be undone. Good game tbh. Would play again.

This game was quite the fascinating experience, but not exactly the saddest I surfed the most obscure flash games back in the day, and found several that were as sad if not more so. Here's a list of emotional flash games you could try, reader: RPG shooter: Starwish (side-scroller with a small spaceship. Lovable characters, humorous tone(before X happens and the atmosphere gets much dourer), sad story, ending depends on your choices and which characters you got closest to. Quite a pearl) missed messages. (not a typo) A game about a girl with depression and you're her roommate and help her. Feels cringey but maybe some would find it sad and worth playing? Air pressure Kind of an airtight game. It's still about depression but much more implicitly than the previous one. Actually I'm not sure what it was about anymore; but it made you think a lot about... stuff. Train of Afterlife Translation is iffy(feels like a VN made by chinese authors, peculiarly enough), and layout makes story hard to understand but it's a pretty good experience. Has multiple endings, some more difficult to grasp but it's honestly an experience. Public version is a demo, you need the full version(which I can help provide, cuz I am a sort of custodian for good but forgotten flash games) (the maker has a few other VN-like emotional games that I never tried tho. X-note, Phantom Seeds, Area X and others) Vorago Inspired by Silent Hill and The Mist(2004), a biblical apocalypse-themed horror game and quite fun actually. Surprisingly good VA and animations, a fun 30-60 minutes play Looming Didn't really understand it cuz played it REALLY long ago, but it gives off a Yume Nikki vibe and there's quite likely more to it than meets the eye. Not really an emotional game, but a mystery/philosophical one, the kind you might play if you're in the mood for emotional games but got no emotional games I woke up next to you It's really weird, gives off an 'off' vibe and an aethereal feeling. Didn't play it through, but looks like it has a lot of potential He beat her Only heard about this game, and that it might be good, but can't find it The Grey Rainbow I think it was an emotional game but can't remember much. Similar to 'A book of Living Magic' that I'll make a passing reference to Personally I found Starwish to be the saddest, because you get attached to the characters much more than you would in a 10 minute game. But author, can you please pin this comment so others can see it and know to seek these good, almost forgotten diamonds?

missed messages, he beat her, and i woke up next to you are all by the same person. i’ve played them all through fully, he beat her is kind of hard, and i woke up next to you is a little unsettling, but i would recommend all three edit: he beat her is about a man being accused of domestic violence, and he has to prove he is innocent, and that his girlfriend was actually abusing him. the game is basically to find clues to prove to the jury that you’re innocent. i woke up next to you is,,, weird? idk it’s about a one night stand except it becomes more than a one night stand and like i think it becomes an unhealthy codependent relationship i don’t remember it was like 5 years ago i played it. ALSO by angela he (creator of these 3 games) is ‘you left me’ which is about loss and unhealthy coping mechanisms and grief, very sad u can find her stuff here - zephyo.itch.io edit 2: ok this comment sent me down a rabbit hole where i relived my angela he addiction so i just want to point out there’s this game that’s rlly similar to one chance in the sense that it’s a virus that’s gonna wipe out the whole earth and you need to come up with a cure for it and the game is called ‘grey plague’ but i never played it bc it’s decision heavy and im indecisive. also ‘there’s this girl’ is a cute short sapphic romance story OK IM SKRRY IM DONE

Ooh, those are definitely interesting games to explore! I can also recommend "The Visit," which has a mix of humorous and sad, mainly at the "You're a sad man" ending. The game is a funny way to show what consequences are like. There's also another game, "We become what we behold" which represents social media in general. Absurdity and Satire about the sad truth.

I played this game a few years back. Too used to getting the bad ending, and restarting for a good one, I tried to try again. I couldn't. I kept trying, but eventually game up. So I started thinking. My mind likes to wander after playing games. So it wandered. Eventually I thought to myself "One shot... One chance at life". And that shook me to the core in a way few things ever have. For one moment, a single iota of time, I felt like I woke up, saw my life and where it could lead from outside myself. It didn't look like it lead anywhere good. And then I was me again. For that brief flash of a moment I was someone else, watching myself live and die, having done absolutely nothing with my life.
