Zelda's Alternate Worlds Explained in 5 minutes

Ойындар

The Legend of Zelda commonly features alternate dimensions and dark worlds, such as the Dark World itself, the Twilight Realm, the Depths, Lorule, Termina and others. Today I take a quick look at the most prominent dimensions featured in the mainline series.

Termina always seemed to me like the place you end up in when you're completely and totally lost, literally and figuratively. Link gets lost in the Lost Woods because he no longer has Navi to guide him, but this is also after he's been sent back in time after being a Hero in the future, and he has no idea what to do with himself now. He's lost

I never saw that perspective! And yes, it’s very possible it’s not a physical place but it is implied that it is

While not really an alternate dimension, the Minish Cap's main mechanic of exploration, shrinking down in size, allows the player to look at the world through a new perspective.

Completely true! In most of the entries without exact alternate worlds there is some form of world change.

That said, there is an alternate world mentioned in the Minish Cap, as its said the Minish themselves come from another world, with the only link bridging them opening once every hundred years, and that's where Vaati and Ezlo came from.

The Great Sea in Phantom Hourglass is also an alternate dimension, as it is revealed to be the world of the Ocean King

I feel like calling the Depths an alternate world is kind of a stretch since it's literally just subterranean caverns deep under Botw and totk's Hyrule, and most of the chasms are just exactly that, chasms tunneling deep into the Earth, it is reminiscent of the underworld and netherworld in most mythologies though at least, especially with the connections to death and the afterlife via a stuff in the Depths like the bargainers' statues, the poes, ganondorf's base of operations being in the depths and the cairns with ghostly soldiers that are lined up with the Great Calamity memorials on the surface. But given how seemingly alien most of the flora and whatnot are down there and the fact that the depths is a mirror of the surface for the most part, the game is very much Totk's take on the Dark World, except as a subterranean series of phenomenally large caverns that can be physically traveled to without any sort of magical aid as opposed to actual magical or metaphysically connected dimensions/worlds like the Dark World, Twilight Realm, Termina and Lorule. But it's still basically the Dark World or a Dark World equivalent from a gameplay perspective

Great video! I am not sure if it counts 100% as an alternate world but in the oracle series there is the overworld too of subrosia where the dead went on like an afterlife. Link travels there through portals so it looks like an alternate world at least. Nevertheless keep going and I loved the video!
