It's kinda fitting that you compared people from Dashcon to Twitter users, because tehcnically, they are. When Tumblr banned NSFW stuff, many Tumblr (even those unrelated to NSFW stuff) users left to Twitter. And around same time, Twitter began to devolve into a cesspool we know it today. Coincedence? I think not.

I'm not sure that's true. Tumblr did lose a lot of users after they banned porn, but Twitter didn't see much of an increase in users afterwards - in fact, Twitter actually lost users in that period, though they attributed that to banning a lot of bots. The Tumblr folks either didn't move to Twitter in droves, or they were already there. Also, I feel like Twitter was already shit in 2018, before the porn ban.

Some important info that IH never included: There were 3 main organisers: Megan Eli, Roxanne Schweiterman and Cain Hopkins (who is the asshole lying about there being a riot of 5000 people). The whole thing was a disaster because of the gross incompetance and genuinely spiteful behaviour of Megan and Cain, who both seemed to really hate Roxanne (who was a literal teenager, while Megan was like 30 and Cain 20-something) and basically refused to do any of the heavy lifting work or communicate with her about anything. They forced her to try and wrangle everything by herself while actively sabotaging the con by ghosting her for weeks at a time, not doing their own jobs, spending all the money on themselves, and talking shit about Roxy to other helpers. Other work (like booking the fucking celeb guests) was delegated to "teams" of "volunteers" who were literal teens and children from different Tumblr fandoms who also had zero con experience and no means to get anything done, which is why there were literally no big guests other than Night Vale (who Megan and Cain fcked over). Poor Roxy really tried to make something out of nothing, but it just wasn't possible when the people with all the control over the money refused to help her do anything or even speak to her when she needed them. It was Megan and Cain (the latter of whom was a known pathological liar in Tumblr circles, and has since been convicted for shoplifting) who orchestrated the money scam, stole the artwork, refused to pay guests/comp their rooms, lied about the charity etc. This entire shitshow was entirely their fault, and when confronted about it they tried to pin it on Roxy/4chan/literally anyone else. Both their tumblrs are still up but Cain wiped his after he got done for theft, and Megan abandoned hers in 2019. They never refunded anyone their money.

Two-spirit is a modern, pan-Indian, umbrella term used by some Indigenous North Americans to describe Native people in their communities who fulfill a traditional third-gender ceremonial and social role in their cultures. The term Two Spirit was created in 1990 at the Indigenous lesbian and gay international gathering in Winnipeg, and "specifically chosen to distinguish and distance Native American/First Nations people from non-Native peoples". The primary purpose of coining a new term was to encourage the replacement of the outdated and considered offensive, anthropological term, berdache. This new term has not been universally accepted, having been criticized as a term of erasure by traditional communities who already have their own terms for the people being grouped under this new term, and by those who reject what they call the "Western" binary implications, such as implying that Natives believe these individuals are "both male and female"

Native American here to help with the question about the Two-Spirits: It’s a belief we are born with multiple ones (depending on tribe) some use male female terms and others use animal terms. For the former it’s believed we’re born with the spirit of both and meant to be equal to eachother but can ‘tune into’ the other as our main one, kinda making the term masculine woman or feminine man. But if a man is more into his female spirit then he will be seen as a woman to the tribe and be called a daughter/sister to his family. FYI I am just passing on how I was taught/raised around my tribesmen and encounters so if it is different for others then that is probably why.

18:28 it gets worse once you find out WHY they were singing. The people at the head of the room pining for donations, were leading the room in this, because a small number of people in the crowd, were legitimately, and rightfully angry and outraged by what was happening, and were speaking out. The heads of the room were leading the crowd in this singing in order to drown out the people who were speaking out and calling this what it was, extortion. This was effectively, a room full of 350 people, sticking their fingers in their ears and going "la la la la la la la i can't hear you" Like pathetic spoiled children being told a truth they didn't want to hear, while the people taking advantage of them, told them to drown it out.

two spirit is an ancient native american belief that some people don't follow the gender norms because they have both a male and female spirit. and they were thought to be blessed people that brought good fortune. So basically, intersex, trans, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people could be considered two spirits in their tribes. and some native american people choose this label of two spirits to identify their gender identity. “Two-Spirit” is a term used within some Indigenous communities, encompassing cultural, spiritual, sexual and gender identity. The term reflects complex Indigenous understandings of gender roles, spirituality, and the long history of sexual and gender diversity in Indigenous cultures.

Well, you really only know if you keep tabs on what's happening with the cringy side of the internet and there's just so much happening in the world that it's impossible to expect everyone to understand everything that's happening. It's already hard enough to just keep aware of what's happening locally, we stand no chance of always knowing what's happening nationally or even globally. Just staying on track regarding a single hobby is already a full time job to stay informed.

Anyway, the Q&A has some answers to some of the things you mentioned as well as other clarifications, but if you weren't planning on watching it: - I know you didn't say much about Welcome to Night Vale, but I thought it was important to clarify that situation. Basically, they did show up and even did an autograph signing (or a similar fan meet-up event, I forget exactly what it was). However, Dashcon hadn't paid them yet, and so they basically said "Okay, if you expect us to hold up the rest of our agreement, you have to hold up yours first and actually pay us." Not only did Dashcon not, but they stiffed them on the room, too. On top of that, apparently Night Vale had cut short a tour to be there in the first place. - The Dashcon organizers were never sued because the amounts of money that they owed were small enough that pursuing them through litigation wouldn't have been worth it. The only exception was the hotel, and of course, that was the one agreement that they actually made sure to fulfill their end of. The main repercussions that the organizers dealt with is that their reputations are so shot from this disaster that it's unlikely that they'll ever be involved in a con again. (They tried doing a second con, but for this very reason, that effort didn't get very far). - Regarding the DVD, apparently it was never made. It is known that photographers/cameramen were there filming for it, and it was discovered which company they were working for. Unfortunately, from what I've seen, the footage was never found, and likely no longer exists.

There were other videos that went more in depth, but basically the main reason the con went to shit was because the 2 main people who in charge of organizing it spent most of their drinking and talking about what they want to do instead of actually organizing it. In fact they actually tricked a 17yo girl was a friend of theirs on tumblr to help organize the event , which resulted in pretty much her doing it solo while the other 2 did nothing. In fact they were so useless that when they showed up to the con to go backstage or on certain panels the security for the con continually stopped them because they didn't recognize them as associated with the convention.

ALSO: Receipt indicates that they had at least $10,000 in cash before asking for donations, from door sales. But the ticket price is $65. 65 times 350 is 22,750. WHERE'S THE MONEY, LEBOWSKI?!

Another fun Internet Historian video is Going Camping at the End of the World. It details one of the many times people thought the world was going to end and all the chaos that comes with it. (No actual camping unfortunately, Camping is just the last name of the guy predicting the end of the world.)

If you want to see something wholesome from 4Chan then I would highly recommend, as would anybody else who has a disability, "The Visual Novel that Broke 4Chan". I know how loaded that entire beginning sentence seems but, *trust me,* this will not get you demonitized or fill you with shame and regret in spite of _everything_ the title implies.

Dashcon was even worse than IH makes it out to be. The main three organizers, two adults, one minor, shoved everything onto the minor and ran with the cash.

I've been that minor in such a situation before. I now have a physical aversion to anyone who makes high-and-mighty promises and acts like some grand martyr; work for the guy who talks shit but does his job.

The fact that disgusting and deplorable people tend to congregate in select sites and forums (echo chambers) makes them really easy to avoid. Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit, 4chan. Facebook too. Much better to avoid them all.

🤔 I can't remember if she did the rainfurest one yet. That would be the best one to have next. Its another con video. This, rainfurest and fire fest are like the panelists of the failed covention panel. Edit: 3:30 "But wait they took $65 from people. What did they do with the money?" LMAOOO Im so glad he mentions this at the end.
