The Sad Truth of My DIY Garden Pond

Three years ago I Built one of my favorite projects to date, the DIY Backyard Garden Pond. It was a real challenge to pull off and something that I'm truly proud of, even to this day. Sure it might not be the best looking thing around, but that's alright. It still does everything it's designed to do and it's been so enjoyable to have. However, the time for it had come and the sad truth of this pond, which I've known for awhile now, must be revealed. More on what's happening in the future... stay tuned.

This was a fun one. Few projects took this long to make and had such an impact on my craft. I know it's not the best pond around, but it was my pond. I'll always think of it fondly and I hope you all enjoyed its series. Thank you so much for your support SerpaSquad and have a great weekend!

I just went to the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon. This reminds me of the koi pond. The caretaker had a wooden stick they used to strike the wooden walking bridge, similar to your boarders, and the fish quickly headed over for feeding. It was amazing. It better be a really good reason you’re having to fill it in. I know that you’ve just gotten better and more knowledgeable about building water features, all things living in a watery ecosystem and plants in general. So I understand how this looks less than perfect to you. You know now, what you didn’t know then and can see how you should have done some things that would somehow make it better. I’m sure most of us don’t have that ability. We just see this gorgeous pond with a waterfall and all the beautiful fish, while wishing it was in OUR backyard! It looks and sounds so beautiful.

I think I can sympathize when it comes to tearing down a build. I had to give up my hobby ever since I moved. I have kept my utensils and 2 tanks which became terrariums for the plants I kept. My new place is not as accommodating to have a fish tank. One day I will get back to it, for now I have the plants that I salvage as a reminder.

That's a nice pond! I learned so much from my first pond and all the things I would do differently (that first pond is now 12-13 years old and ready to be totally redesigned). I went on to do a much bigger pond in my backyard. I put a bowl fountain in this pond: a large shallow bowl (like 3' across) filled with large decorative rock, with a water line coming up through the bottom so the water overflows the sides. Last year I had excess elephant ear bulbs, so just for fun I put a few in the bowl. Man did they like it there! They grew 5-6' tall with huge leaves. It looked spectacular. That one feature turned the pond into a tropical paradise. I have to clean the bowl out and replant the elephant ears each spring, but it's worth it. This year I added a few caladiums for color and they like it too.

Yes sad day indeed, Tanner, that such a wonderful, fecund pond has to go. Thanks for the detailed update to document it before the shutdown.

This particular pond went through 4 fazes always go bigger LOL. And my pond is swimable. Great show and a beautiful pond. Will look forward to the update. Thank you.

Moving? I doubt it's causing issues locally otherwise. Definitely a cool build especially since it's at a larger scale and outdoors. Can't wait to see the next one. Great as always. \o/

The rustic look reminds me of an old west wellspring we have around the dryer parts of coastal california ranchlands. I love it!

I've not seen your pond before! I love the modesty and simplicity, it reflects your own hard work and thoughtful function and design. Sad to hear you have to remove it. I hope something similar will be in your future.
