The SAD Truth About New York Undercover | Disrespect From The Network, Whitewashing

New York Undercover had it all. Drama, action, mystery, romance and bangin’ music featured in every episode, making it one of the most exciting and entertaining television shows to watch in the ‘90s. The American crime drama, co-created and produced by Dick Wolf, aired for 4 seasons on the Fox network from September 8, 1994, to February 11, 1999.

New York Undercover should have lasted much longer than it did. Dick Wolf lived up to his name in full. The musical guests, epsiode music, theme song was on point thanks to James Mtume. The final season was a throwaway season. That being posted: Martin, Living Single, New York Undercover- that was an incredible Thursday night lineup. With the revelations of Malik Yoba and Michael DeLorenzo over the years New York Undercover has a new meaning in 2023 word to the episode Blondes Have More Fun (S1/E12)... IYKYK

All of the seasons until the last one had around 24-26 episodes and the last one was only 13 as it was burnt off so they could get it off TV quickly. Fox has a habit of doing that for shows in their last season or so.

Thursdays on Fox in the 90s was the place to be. The Thursday Trinity (Martin, Living Single, New York Undercover) ruled. The show definitely captured everything 90s with hip hop and R&B. Too bad it didn't last long due to network and BTS politics. Edit: With Thomas Mikal Ford joining the cast its safe to say Tommy finally got a job.

I am watching this on Prime. I remember watching it in the '90s. It's such a powerful show to have people of color as the main characters in a show. Plus, the music itself is unbelievable. I was watching the episode and I was like is that Aaliyah? The musicians are the top musicians. Such a fantastic show all around. Lauren Velez and her twin sister are phenomenal actors as well as Michael D. And Malik Y. I wish That there were more shows like this.

This was a good show. It got better as the years went on. I liked when they had the star guests sing a classic song at the end. Twenty years ago I had a couple of classes with one of the actors from one of their classic episodes. But I found out years later when I was watching the reruns. He was so humble and never put it out there that he was an actor.

And Dick Wolf's excuse about the show being in the red (not making a profit) is just that, an excuse. Virtually most TV shows, sitcoms, and dramas operate in the red. The end goal is for a respective TV show to get to the 100-episode goal line. Once a show hits that number, it is much easier to sell the show to syndication...aka re-runs. The cast of Friends do not have to do anything for the rest of their lives. They make hand over fist ($) in residuals.

To me, it was always this elusive gritty adult show that was too real and scary and sad for me to watch Like, i still have vivid memories of the episode where the main cop's son has a friend who gets shot and killed and that was my first experience in realizing that kids could die. Before, it was like "oh, only old people die", but then i got punched in the face by reality. It was borderline traumatic, lol.

Great video. Minority programming is always on a leash. Think about being on a show for about five years. Get the experience. Figure out the ways of the network. Get the bag. Then be prepared to move on. Quit equating yourself and your talents to non-minority actors and actresses. The networks and industries will always consider non-minority programming superior to minority programming. In other words, the fact that the industry calls it "minority programming" tells you that they have no intent to keep shows that fall under the category on the air. They are mere fillers for when other shows do better. Living Single was a filler for Friends. New York Undercover ended up being a filler for Law & Order, which Dick Wolf ended up getting the cast he wanted. Sometimes you got to know the system, play it for all its worth, and then prepare your own thing in transition.
