I had known about Sabbath all of my life and never really got into them, but Born Again changed all of that. Mind, I’ll never forget the first time I heard the opening to Disturbing The Priest with Ian’s maniacal laughter.. after this album, not only did I get into Sabbath, but deep purple as well. Born Again was a major keystone into me getting back into metal. Remains one of my favorites to this day.

APD from Motorhead and Born Again from Sabbath were both released in 1983. Both albums were slammed by the critics and fans. Both line ups only lasted 1 album. Both bands had controversial lineups. In my opinion, Both albums are brilliant. I wish both bands could've given us more albums with these line ups!

I'm one of those guys who initially hated this album but have grown to love it. All it took was listening to the unmixed version on KZread... for whatever reason, that mix did the job for me and I now appreciate how good this album actually is. My favourite songs are pretty straightforward: 1. Disturbing the Priest 2. Zero the Hero 3. Trashed 4. Hot Line

This is my FAVORITE Sabbath studio record, and my first new studio album. I had gotten Live Evil and absolutely loved it and when they announced Black Sabbath and Quiet Riot together in New Haven - How could this 14 year old metal head say no???? I had no idea Dio was out, but I loved the show, and bought the Born Again album as soon as I could in the following days. I loved the record; the production never bothered me, even today. But it was about 10 years ago now that this record was born again to me.... like I totally rediscovered it with a new state of mind. I love all Sabbath but this one really does it for me.

Back in the early 1980's circa 1983 when Rainbow was promoting and touring their BENT OUT OF SHAPE album, singer Joe Lynn Turner and bassist Roger Glover (who had also been a member of Deep Purple Mark 2.0) made an appearance together on the weekly nationally-syndicated call-in radio show called ROCKLINE. I was just a very young teen at the time, but I was already a huge Rainbow fan, and I was just starting also to explore the older 1970's Deep Purple catalog. So I called in to the show and was placed on hold for almost the entire 2 hours until near the very end when I was put on air and allowed to ask Roger Glover if there were any plans or possibility of a Deep Purple reunion occurring sometime in the foreseeable future. I had not yet heard any rumors - - my question had been motivated solely on the basis of wishful thinking on part. Whether or not his response was governed by the true extent of his personal knowledge at the time, Glover promptly dismissed the idea, saying there were no such plans in the works. Of course, it was probably only a year or less later when the official Deep Purple Mark 2.0 reunion, including a new album (PERFECT STRANGERS) and world concert tour, actually came to fruition, so I liked to imagine that my phone call that particular night had played at least a small part in the way events had ultimately unfolded. I do not recall Black Sabbath's BORN AGAIN album being a factor in my mind then when I asked the question, so it probably had not yet been released. In retrospect, I would gladly have accepted the Deep Purple reunion being postponed a few years if we could have gotten an additional one or two Black Sabbath albums with Ian Gillan on vocals. Incidentally, it was only recently that I learned the primary reason the Deep Purple reunion likely had occurred when it did is that guitarist Ritchie Blackmore had just been taken to the cleaners by a very costly divorce proceeding, so he was eager to avail himself of all the record company money that was being thrown at him and his Deep Purple bandmates. Also, regarding BORN AGAIN, I still have a magazine interview from the mid-1980's in which Tony Iommi claimed that it was AFTER he had submitted the master tapes to the record company that someone somehow subsequently intervened to sabotage the recording quality and/or mix. Iommi, if he is to be believed, was just as shocked as everyone else upon first hearing the version of the album that got released to the public.

Thankyou both for encouraging me to give Born Again, a re-listen. I only really listened to Zero the Hero, on the Very best of Black Sabbath compilation but there are so many better songs on this album. I also enjoy the live at Reading Festival show and yes Ian Gillan's otherworldly screams are amazing as they possibly were fear inducing at the gig?! I have now ordered a copy of the deluxe CD and can't wait to share this album with my neighbours! Keep doing all the great stuff you do and thankyou. David.

I have a unique Japanese "Castle" CD of Born Again (not the "Essential" remaster) which Chris might want to add to his collection (TECW 20186). The sound is "authentic" I guess, but it can be improved by reducing treble, adding some bass and "surround" if your system allows you to do so. Then it's quite a decent sounding 80s metal album.

Despite being in my late 40s, I’m really just making my way through the Sabbath catalog for the first time. Listened to Born Again for the first time last month after this show was announced. While it does sound kind of dated, and some of the lyrics are cheese, I dug this album. The title track in particular stuck out to me. The cloudy/muddy production is something I really like, and totally reminds me of a current band like Dream Unending. I don’t know any Sabbath after this album, but I’m guessing this is the only album in the catalog that has the particular sound. So that would seem like a stand out quality to me, in a good way.

What a fantastic episode guys, keep it up. I love Born Again; in fact, it was because of Pete and Chris' love for the album on here that I bought it despite having read all the poor reviews. It's a great album. The Reading Festival gig was only about a mile away from my house, pretty sure my parents would have heard it at the time (I wasn't born until the following year). Chris, I was surprised to hear that there is no footage of the Devil Baby used on the tour, didn't realise that! Keep up the great work!

I attended the first concert they did for that tour in Toronto. Of course without the Stonehenge on stage that they couldn't get into the arena according to Geezer. I always remember watching Gillan and couldn’t see his face because he kept putting his head down and had his hair was covering most of his face which I found kind of odd. Then I saw an interview by Gillian specifically stating that he had the lyrics written down for a lot of the older songs because he hadn’t memorized them for the early shows of the tour. Now it all makes sense why he kept looking down lol

I was at the Reading Festival (August 26-28th 1983) where Black Sabbath was headlining Saturday, so I believe that must have been the (very ?) first show of them including the Stonehenge stage set, which was later not happening. What is very interesting the album was NOT out at the time, it only was released three weeks later (12. September 1983!) So noone in the audience knew any of the 6 then unrelease new songs from that album! I even can remember the participation within the crowd was kinda quiet. Like said, parts of that concert are included in the Deluxe Edition from 2011. / Yes, that song "Digital bitch" is about Sharon, that is even in the (German) wikipedia. Probably was in Kerrang! back in the day, would have to look at the old magazines, which I still have, I heard that before and Chris reminded me. (You must remember: Sabbath's manager Don Arden at the time was quite hostile towards the band's then ex-vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, who had recently married his daughter Sharon and was fond of telling Osbourne that his children resembled the Born Again cover! :-) hahaha! PS: Also Ian Gillan DESTROYED the 20 copies he got right after the release of "Born Again" as he was DISGUSTED at the sound AND the cover!!!

As crazy as the songs are on Born Again, as good as the songs are on Born Again, I can't get past the production 40 years later. The drums are tinny and Geezer's bass is almost nonexistent. BUT Gillan sounded possessed and Iommi's guitar was heavy as hell. I just can't get passed the bass and the drums. Me being a drummer, it hurt me. I can listen to it, but it still hurts my ears. And I think to myself: "Please remix this album." It can be saved. I know it can. Fun conversation.

On the video for Roots (Sepultura's biggest hit) Andreas Kisser wears a Born Again t-shirt. It was 96 and I remember thinking; "There you go, Andreas. Showing some love for a controversial album". People in Brazil like Born Again nowadays, but it was still controversial during the 80's. That's why it was kind of a nice statement from him to wear it in 96. Specially when Sepultura was leaning to Nu-Metal: Korn, Deftones...

This was great ! Could have listened all day . Saw the tour at Nassau Coliseum Long Island NY and it was amazing. Like you said Ian Gillan was letting out these screams that literally knocked me off my chair that I was standing on , ended up elbowing some poor girl in the face due to it 😳. I have the tour program love the album so dark and heavy the muddy mix adds to that 👹. Also agree that it definitely took its toll on Ian’s voice but dam it was killer . Thanx to both of you can’t wait till the next episode . Funny how right after they got another Purple guy in Glen Hugh’s 😮. Saw that show as well and a week later with his replacement Ray Gillan from a local Long Island band but that’s another story 🧨

I received the remastered CD from 2004 today and love it. I already had the original LP but decided I wanted to get the CD version. It's great. In my own rankings, I gave it 5 stars (I give 6 for what I consider classic albums). It has my favourite Black Sabbath cover artwork. LOL! PS: I agree there is a marked difference in Ian Gillan's voice between "Born Again" and "Perfect Strangers" and onwards. Yes, he can still scream on certain notes, but on others he seems to have hardly any voice. I noticed he now does basically the one scream note.

Interesting video, while discussing particular eras/album cycles I'd find it interesting if you expanded on the tour info & discussing how the setlists changed over the tour e.g., Keep It Warm & Born Again were only played on the European tour; Heaven & Hell was added towards the end of the European tour & played on the US tour & that Neon Knights was added as the opener for the 1984 tour dates pushing Childen of the Grave up after Zero the Hero.

Great episode again fellas! Huge fan of this record and bought immediately after release date. Saw the tour in Atlanta at the Fox Theater from row 2!! They had Night Ranger for support which was kind of curious.

Steve 'Krusher' Joule came to prominence as the graphic artist at Kerrang magazine. From there, as you say, he went on to to album cover work for Ozzy and a few other bands of the era.

Great show, Pete and Chris. Thanks for talking about this amazing album. It's always been one of my favorites from the band. It's the first new Sabbath album I bought and I became a hughe fan immediately. They played in Madrid and San Sebastián on that tour in september 1983 but I couldn't go because I was only 12...😂 What an evil sounding album and what an amazing bunch of songs. For me the heaviest album ever. 🤘🔥♥️ Favorite songs 1 Disturbing the Priest 2 Thrashed 3 Zero the Hero

From the things i have read and heard from numerous sources about the 'super deluxe editions'. They HAVE been reissued in order, next one should be Born Again, which means.... If it's an earlier album and hasn't been given the SDE by now, it won't be.

I was turned onto Ozzy-era Sabbath in `82. I can't remember if I was already listening to solo Ozzy, but both happened around virtually the same time. There was a war of words going on between the Sabbath and Ozzy camps and I took Ozzy's side so I never gave the Dio albums a chance. A friend had bought the semi-recently released "Mob Rules," but I wasn't having any of it. My Sabbath was Ozzy-Sabbath. So, when "Born Again" came out I was all aboard. I was already a fan of Deep Purple. It was also my first "new" Sabbath purchase. I got it right after I saw the "Trashed" video on MTV, so pretty quickly. But I couldn't take the recording. It was just too muddy. I'd basically play "Trashed" over and over and then put it away until I bought the 2011 remaster. It was like discovering a buried treasure in your house. It's so awesome. Gillan has never sounded meaner or nastier. I did get onboard with Dio with the release of "Holy Diver" (I believe I already had "Ritche Backmore's Rainbow," which was a little mellow for me at the time) and went back to the Dio-era Sabbath. I had also purchased "Live Evil" when it came out, to give it shot, but I hated the production on it and did not like the way Dio sang the Ozzy tunes.

The production on Live Evil and Born Again never really bothered me back in 1983 when I picked up both of those vinyls. I was so into the music on both, that the sonics were secondary. Later on through the years as I got spoiled with better production values, I noticed how subpar the sound was on those albums. Since then, the remasters have helped. As for ranking Born Again....definitely up there in my top 3 Sabbath albums. Gillan is an absolute beast on it.

Gillan is unlistenable. In Purple, Sabbath, wherever. The high pitched screaming he does is jarring and lame.

@@promark5317 Quite the opposite. Gillan shines brightly on this album. Any other Sabbath singer could only dream of hitting the notes Ian hits on here - all in the right pitch and all in service of each song. A stellar performance.

I love this album, can't get tired of it. My parents must've thought the devil was in my room when they heard "Disturbing the Priest" one day, when I brought it home from school. One funny story, where I live we had only one earthquake that did some damage and me and a friend felt it at the same time we were listening to Born Again. We freaked out! Thanks for this topic.

Great show guys I left Sabbath by the time thus came out but went back and I actually love it now but my Sabbath history is a long great story! I will post on future shows but my entrance this band is my older brother had We Sold Our Souls For Rock and Roll their first greatest hits album and I fell in love with it! That was 1976 and I was 11 years old.

Whatever the reason for the Mk2 Reunion may have been (interesting theory by Chris): the result "Perfect Strangers" makes Born Again blush like the devilbaby on its cover and wipes the floor with all post-Dio Rainbow!
