The Russian Churches Built without Nails

Two wooden churches and a bell tower have proudly stood on Kizhi Island in Russia for hundreds of years, weathering the test and tumult of time with only a tree-born tenacity. That's a dramatic way of saying that these impressive and ornate structures were built in the traditional Russian carpentry style, using only wooden logs with interlocking corners-no nails or metal supports here whatsoever. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Church of the Transfiguration, the Church of the Intercession and their corresponding bell tower are a reminder that craft and ingenuity really are what building's all about.

people used to build wooden things without metal because it helped make them last longer. if a structure was madw with all the right kinds of wood then it would expand and contract together with the changing seasons/elements.

The narrator is mispronouncing "Kizhi". The [zh] should be similar to the pronunciation of ⟨s⟩ in "treasure"; the first "i" should sound close to the pronunciation of ⟨i⟩ in "bin"; the last "i" is the most difficult sound, for it is unique to Slavic languages, but you can also pronounce it as the first [i] . The name is pronounced with stress on the first syllable.

The traditional Shangri-La houses are also made only with woods. And if someone wants to have a new home, they have to build it themselves (with help of their fellow villagers), and they also have to cut the trees from their village's mountain. But of course, they're not as grand as this church, but still pretty cool though.

I read some here, laughed :)) We borrowed technology from Japan - a masterpiece!!! It is elementary to find out the year of the church's construction (1694-1714), the location on the world map (Karelia, next to Finland, and even Sweden is closer), and finally clarify, and when official data on contacts of Russian researchers with Japan appeared (1739, and the official ambassador appeared in Japan in 1804)??? ! (I think about the closeness of Japan then for the outside world it is not worth reminding, at least it is known to commentators, I hope). Well, yes, in general, this is about how to say that the ancient Egyptians, Mayans, Aztecs borrowed architecture from the Eiffel. Bravo.
