The Russian Campaign, 5th Edition. 1941 Play Through, Part 2
Ойындар
I continue my 1941 Play Through of The Russian Campaign, 5th Edition campaign game. Part 2 presents turns 2 and 3 of the campaign, continuing Operation Barbarossa into the early fall. So far the invasion of the Soviet Union is a mixed bag, with great results in the north of the country and disappointing results in the South. Can the Germans get the invasion back on track? Watch and see.

It says a lot that we all throw the Axis Minor Powers' troops to the dogs whenever losses are made LOL. I've always liked the way the designer was able to encode the historical problems the Axis faced in this campaign, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, not to mention the limitations caused by changing weather. Truly a classic game! Thanks again.
Who needs Netflix when we have such a riveting and well done play through!

Nice videos :) I remember the scary weather rolls from an older version of the game...

Hello PM! Yup, I remember those too. At least you can take solace in that the worst possible game weather in 1941 WAS the historic weather! - Paul
Beautiful intro! One very minor comment: there's only one R in "strategy."

Hi Curt. At least you didn’t comment that “strategery” is not a word. It exists courtesy of President Dub-ya, who had a unique relationship with the English language. 😁. - Paul
Great video, sure looked like the Germans were doing well, but now one die roll away from losing.

The Germans just could not (quite) get it done. Still, they were on the back foot in the South from the start. Amazing they at least had a shot at it. -- Paul
You mention that retreating surrounded units "surrender". But, in reading the rules (13.5) it says that units with no legal retreat path are "eliminated" not surrendered. ("If no legal retreat path exists, retreating units are eliminated.")

Hi John! One of the hardest things about playing solitaire is that you have no one to correct your mistakes. Thanks for catching that and letting us all know. I stand - gratefully - corrected. - Paul
Thank you for your videos. I like the way you zoom in on the action. This gives me a better appreciation of what is happening. I have one question in regard to the German attack on Riga at about the 37:00 mark. Did you eliminate two German 3-4 units in EX for the one Soviet unit? Was this intentional? If so, I was wondering why. This is a game I passed on back in the day, so thanks again for your play through. Cheers.

Hello Robert. Thanks for chiming in! If I did eliminate two 3-4's then that was a mistake. The CRT results either call for the elimination of ALL attackers (AE) or just one unit (A1 and EX). About passing on it, if you are a hex and counter guy (or wanna be) you could spend more money on far worse games than TRC. I think this would be a "go to" game rather than a "dust collector" on most game shelves. For grins, check out the GMT site if interested. -- Paul
In your 2:1 0dds attack on Kiev, it was a single GE 7-7 armor vs a Soviet 4-3 inf that would have been doubled to 8, correct? Shouldn't that attack have been at 1:2 odds? Enjoying the game - thanks much!

Hello Mr Blue. Both stacks had additional units that were stacked with/hidden by the units you mention. Even the worker unit in Kiev counts and is doubled along with everything else there. - Paul
Hi! In your second attack on Riga, I think you removed two 3-4 German units? 😱😱

Hello Nick. I must have done that; you are the second person to comment on it. Can't pull anything over on you guys! As I replied to your colleague, when the CRT calls for attacker losses, it will either be all attackers lost (AE), or a single unit lost (A1 or EX). If I eliminated two 3-4's, then that must have been a mistake. Good thing the Germans did okay in the North even with my error. Thanks again, Paul.
i wonder how this game differs from Compass version
You’ve placed Soviets where they cannot be placed
The russian 12 inf 6-3 cannot be placed there
