The Royals Really Are All Related (2/2)

Part 1: • The Royals Really Are ...
Please consider supporting me at / lindsayholiday
All 10 of the European hereditary monarchs alive today can trace their ancestry back to a single royal couple, Johan Willem Friso, Prince of Orange and Marie Louise of Hesse-Kassel. Let's meet this prolific pair and 76 of their descendent who went on to sit on the thrones of The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, Spain, The UK, Belgium, Monaco and Liechtenstein. And we’ll take a fascinating journey through the last 300 years of European history.
I make mini documentaries about women's history and royal history:
Queens of the World: • Queen Marie Antoinette...

I listened to a podcast about this. Apparently a lot of royals put the status of the family or monarch they were marrying into above their genetic disorders & ran the risk. They would rather have the prestige & disorder than no prestige & no disorder. Also, at the time, they didn’t know as much compared to what we know today with all these genetic diseases.

3:29 That bit of information has bothered me ever since I read about it some years ago. Alfonso XIII absolutely knew that hemophilia existed in the decedents of Queen Victoria and was repeatedly warned not to court Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. But he chose to do so anyway because he was apparently infatuated with her and eventually married her. Then he had the gall to resent her when their son inherited the illness, an illness she had no control over, an illness he knew she could pass on to male offspring. 😑

Have to say I have mentioned a bit of this on various videos speaking of the Royal family and how they have married distant cousins and the wars were fought and often they changed parts, you may say and the other cousin or brother would take over as King. They did marry other Royals in other countries to keep their money and to keep the fighting down.

Lindsey,... You do a great job pronouncing all the names, titles, and geographic entities. I can help with one, however. The place Hohenzollern is indeed a mouthful, but is easier to pronounce if you divide it into two parts: Hohen, and zollern. Hohen is a geographical adjective meaning Upper, as in Upper New York State. Zollern is a place name. When pronouncing it sat Ho-n-zoll- -urn...or ( Hoe)-(hen)- (zoll, rhymes with roll)-(earn, as in earn a living) I hope this is helpful. I love your videos.

Dear Lindsay, Countess Claudine Rhédey von Kis Réde/Klaudina Zsuzsánna Rhédey de Kis-Rhéde/ was not related to Dracula! IThe Rhédey family has been known from the 13th century. It is one of the Hungarian noble families descending from the house of Aba The most notable ancestor of the Aba noble house was Samuel Aba, the third king of Hungary between 1041 and 1044, married to a sister of St. Stephen I, the first Roman Catholic king of Hungary. Today is our national anniversary. I would be happy if you don't misinform your viewers, many thanks, greetings from HU, Erdélyország

Great video, but just a thing. At 21:15, Emperor Maximilian of Mexico is the bearded man looking down at the couch, not the one standing looking at the camera. Also, he wasn't just appointed but *elected* Emperor. A referendum was held in 1864, where the embattled and bankrupt republic was defeated by a return to the country's original form of independent government -- constitutional monarchy.

Juan Carlos is tremendously unpopular in Spain. His son has a much better reputation but Leonor is definitely going to be a popular Queen when she grows up. Letizia, Leonor's mother is also unpopular and many people don't like her. One of Philip's sister and his brother-in-law, Cristina and Iñaki, have been embroiled in scandal and he went to prison... Honestly, I'm still surprised how much Spain sticks to their monarchs, any country would have got rid of them by now

Felipe has the hardest task of any royal today. He needs to walk the tightrope of being a neutral political overseer while keeping a spotless image for himself and his children while his father, sister, and nephews are delinquent, corrupt messes. He almost fucked up in 2018 during the Catalonian independence movement, but has managed to survive it. If he is able to sell himself as a clean sovereign and pull the monarchy out of the Intensive Care Unit, he'll be able to leave his daughter Leonor a healthy crown.

Also important to note that you're actually incorrect. She is formally ‘Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith’. In everyday usage you might well refer to her as the Queen of England, but that's not her proper title.
