My mom would play this on the piano every once and a while as I grew up. She passed away a few weeks ago at 49. I'm 19 and completely lost without her. I've been practicing this song on the piano so that I can keep that small part of her with me.

This song was played on the piano at my and my wife’s wedding. My wife passed away on August 15, 2022. I cry every time I hear this song. We were married for 22 years and I feel so lost and sad without her. But I know she is in a better place now with Jesus. I will always love her, miss her and she will always be in my heart forever.❤️

I lost my wife 2 weeks ago from covid-19. The feeling of having to watch the love of your life slowly choke to death, alone in icu and not being able to do anything about it...is indescribably horrific and it tore a hole in me. She tried to call me while I was at work, before they sedated her because knew she wasn't coming back. I missed her calls due to the poor reception where I work. She left her sister a message to give me saying "tell trinity that I love him.". I loved her more than I ever thought I could love someone. And although my heart still beats... I died with her in icu that day. RIP Kathryn Bernard. I hope you know how much you meant to me. I miss you so much, it literally hurts me. I would have done anything to rewind time long enough to have been able to answer when you called. If I could only go back in time long enough to give you one last painful kiss.

“I wrote it in 45 minutes…”, said the American country singer-songwriter, Amanda McBroom, referring to one of the greatest songs ever written! A simple short melody repeats 3 times. On second repetition the lyrics deliver 4 sentences that rival the wisdom of every age and the utterances of every sage: • It’s the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance; • It’s the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance; • It’s the one who won’t be taken who cannot seem to give; • And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live. The creative power of the human spirit never ceases to amaze me.

And just because you’re a man, doesn’t mean you can’t love a Whitney Houston, or in this case, a Bette Middler love ballad. No matter who you are, or what you’re age is, you should always be able to appreciate good music. No matter the genre

My big sister is dying...this was the first song I ever heard her sing. When she sang this, looking at her and hearing her voice, seeing her emotions,...this made me want to be just like her and to sing as good as her one day. Now she is in Maine dying and I am states away just wishing I could be there with her to sing this for her. I love you sissy, more than words.

I never realised just what a good song this is. From a songcrafting point of view, it's genius, people. Amanda McBroom wrote it, and Bette Midler recorded it for the first time. When I was a younger wee bairn I thought it was too cheesy and sentimental for a metalhead boy to play, but now I repent! Embrace the cheese! In fact, pass me some pumpernickel.

My older sister used to sit on the floor of her room in 1979, and played her 45rpm of "The Rose" almost daily, on a Sears record player. She passed last year at 53. Her husband and I were going through her stuff to separate heirlooms, and I found a dog-eared, still with the record in the jacket 45rpm of this song. Good thing she took the time to seal it in a ziplock bag. Otherwise I would have soaked it. Within 30 seconds, there were two grown men sniffling and softly sobbing in that garage. *RIP, Dawn*

When I was 9 years old, i sang this song at my aunt Summer’s wedding. Last week on 11/10/21 she passed away after just turning 40 years old from liver and kidney failure from complications after gastric bypass surgery. She secretly suffered from alcoholism that none of us knew about, and drinking daily after having the surgery to lose weight ended up being the death of her. Now, I am watching this video to prepare to sing this same song at her funeral next weekend. I never realized how deep these lyrics were and just how much they would mean so many years later. Gone from us too soon, but never forgotten RIP my aunt Summer Sierra Lantrip

Tripple, I'm sorry you feel that way. I think you misunderstood my context though. I also don't believe that death is the end... that we cease to exist.... the bitter-cold is a physical representation of death perhaps... but the love and memories left behind last and I have hope that there is something more beyond the physical. Peace to you and thank you for what you did for the council. That couldn't have been an easy task facing death everyday. I pray that it humbles and softens you and not create a bitter dread.

I remember hearing this song for the first time. Imagine a small group of high school kids - full of energy and life. This song comes on. Nothing but silence for the next three-and-half minutes. At the end of the song, someone broke out of the trance and asked, "What just happened?!" We didn't even remember the lyrics - just a song about a rose. It was that powerful. I can't say we have souls, but if we do - this song spoke to them.

My wife and I took in a foster child with a very severe heart defect. We were told she wouldn't live for a year and don't get close to her. We told them that if a child comes into this home, it would be loved. We experienced miracles that saved her life several times. She loved music, but "The Rose" was her favorite and she would break into a lovely smile everytime she heard the first few notes. While we saw her in critical condition several times in her life she continued to live. We adopted her at age 5. She continued to live, but on Sept 2, 2018, she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away at 24 years of age. My grand daughter sang "The Rose" at her funeral. Whenever I think and cry about her we play The Rose for comfort.

We all have regrets: I should've said this, I should've done that; but in the end, all you can do is honour his memory and forgive yourself. he would want that for you. How extraordinary Bette Midler is as a performer. This song makes me reflect heavily on the friends & family that I've lost or are going through a hard time. It makes me realize that there are so many people out there experiencing the lost of a loved one. They need to know that you are never truly alone when facing such hardships. All you need is the love of family, friends & even strangers who are willing to support you in difficult times. You don't need to take on this heavy burden alone.

I never knew lyrics could describe me so well until I heard those words I don’t want to live, and yet I’m too scared to let myself die Right now, I bear through everything for those who may need me I’m 17, I sleep with a fucking Teddy bear because I don’t want to feel alone, I act happy because I don’t want people to see me sad, I pretend to love life because I want to convince myself that I don’t want death 17, and I’m feeling all of this, after years of bullying to near suicide, abuse leading to considering running away, loneliness that led to a fear which drove people away

This was my dad's favourite song. He printed the lyrics and glued it on his food truck he used to work in and he would always request this song to be played, and would sang along. I think the song represented the profound and pure love him and my mother shared over many many years. He passed away nearly 5 years ago. Every time I listen to this song, it brings me back to him and to the great moments we shared together. I love you eternally Daddy, I hope you are at peace wherever you are ♥✨

This is one of those songs I had been hearing on radio when i was just a little boy, yet even back then, I remember the intensity I felt while listening to them. It's one of those that will stay with me for a lifetime. I didn't understand a word of it since I didn't speak English back then. And now, after more than 15 years, so much has happened to me. I can't describe the intensity I felt after randomly finding it. Every single word in it felt so close and true to my perspective of life and love, It was like finding a missing piece of myself, mixed together with a nostalgia. I could hardly breath for a moment. It was a moment of divine happiness, combined with unbearable sadness of the past. I'm grateful for finding this song. It gave me alot

Some say love, it is a river, that drowns the tender reed Some say love, it is a razor, that leaves your soul to bleed Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need I say love, it is a flower, and you, its only seed It's the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed, that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose

Love. It is a flower and you its only seed. When my mom died , I was lost . She was my best friend. We moved a lot. Family was scarce . Friends. I didn't know how to keep friends. We would just move. I'd lose touch. So mom was always my main squeeze. Fast forward 16 yrs later. My father has died. Little family around. I have a child now. Family has nothing to do with him. Or me. We have eachother . This song reminds me of that. Ever if just one person loves you. And you love one person. You are blessed. Love. You. It's only seed. It starts within. The love. Have to love yourself. Others won't do it for you. A select few. But... you. It's only seed. I got to start building a tribe for my boy. He has my best friend and her kids. We shall water our garden there. The rose.

We forget how talented and underrated Bette Midler really is, both as an actress and a singer. She maybe one of the few actresses to have been nominated for an Oscar and a Grammy in the same year. She won the Grammy for best female artist pop for the song and was nominated for an Oscar for the movie. That is a big accomplishment.

Don't think she as an artist has ever been underrated at all - the 60s, 70s and even the 80s now are looked at like they are the "olden days." Unbelievable! Therefore unfortunately she isn't known like she was back in the 70s or 80s. The only thing about Bette Midler that has ever truly been underrated, in my humble opinion, was her song:"I Think Its Going To Rain Today." I like a lot of her big hits, but this song is one of my all time faves by her.

I come back to this song after so many years to say this my gf commited suicide we knew what was happening me and her family and we were trying to help her get through it but we failed i failed to save her. I say this please people be nice to each other, help each other when in need, do not pass someone who is suffering by just telling them to get over it, if you have a person close to you that is going through a rought patch offer a helping hang always be there and do not let that person shove you away because that is what he/she needs the most at that critical junction. I only pray that this world will see more good people, people who care and listen. Whoever you are reading this comment (if anyone reads it) know that you are loved by someone you are very dear to someone , or if you know someone that is in a tough position offer help, you all are beautiful people no matter what someone says you all matter and have value. Whoever you are reading this be strong, be supportive and know that it's always darker just before the sun rises never give up never surrender! Thank you for taking time to read this and may god bless you!

Shortly, The Rose, by Bette Midler , will one selection of music for my sister's memorial. She loved it, we spoke of it many times and we only changed a few words. This was back when it first came out. If you only change one word, at the final line of lyrics it says, "The Seed, That With The Sun's Love, in the Spring Becomes The Rose." My sister and I changed the words, Sun's Love to , SON'S LOVE. Our family is a large group of Believers, therefore, we needed to use HIS name. My sister just passed on the 25th. Brand new pain, but so honored to be with her and her grandaughter when she breathed her last early breath. Note: we all greive differently, in our own way, our own timing, but no one can steal the memories and history of one so close. Be kind to yourself, those left behind from that loved one, God knows it all and will carry you when you can't move under your own strength, wisdom or knowledge. Much love from my sister, me and our entire family. Peace.

Sad story: I have no clue when the woman sang The Rose during my wedding. My (Ex-)Wife is gone long ago, and had taken all the DVDs of the marriage, when she left... I hope all worked out for you and it was a sign from your dad from Heaven supporting you...

My mother just recently had surgery on her head. This is the song that she always sang for me when I was a little kid, and I still love it to this day. I just hope she remembers it. This song is super important to me, in all honesty. I want to learn how to play it on the piano at some point.
