Simply put, autoimmune diseases are conditions where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues rather than a foreign molecule like bacteria, and they are a huge problem both in this country and worldwide. You’re probably familiar with the most common autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, and psoriasis. But there are many more autoimmune diseases that affect the nervous system, joints and muscles, skin, endocrine gland, and heart.
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about the main causes of autoimmune disease, the conventional medicine approach versus the Functional Medicine approach to treating autoimmune disease, and how to reverse the course of these devastating illnesses.

Living in a subdivision where 65 neighbors all got together to spray their lawns with insecticides and pesticides. It landed on my vegetable garden, and i was canning vegetables and I popped a snap pea into my mouth and burned my tongue. Within 48 hours, i was paralyzed for 8 days , and my inflammatory markers were through the roof. I then began burning and eventually diagnosed with CRPS. I changed my diet, lost 40 pounds, i don't smoke, and everything has changed. If i have any sugar, my body breaks out in burns. I also noticed my children's hands were sticky after playing in the grass, but there was no sign that any company had sprayed. They did. So I've quit bounce sheets and my son is free of allergy needles after 7 months of my stopping those alone. We have to be pro- active and we'll see results. ❤ this podcast.

It is just crazy that Doctors do not get nutrition training in Medical schools. Every doctor visit should include some nutrition discussion. The majority of the population is over weight or obese leading to high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Schools and hospital cafeterias should be leading the way to good health by setting the example of what is a healthy meal and teaching people what to eat and why.. Every person in the hospital for heart disease should have a nutrition class before being checked out from the hospital with follow up education and training in nutrition. Medicare and Medicaid should require patient nutrition education as part of their standard of care. Nutrition information should be run on the hospital TV channel.

There are support grps & specialists but not local and 1-2yr wait list. The only reason I've been able to get this far after 30+ yrs @ 60yo is your videos and insight on practical, holistic meds. Having autoimmune disease I have battled it for years and I’m going on 68 years old I’m going back to ancestral eating. I did this for several years and I was basically pain free. Gradually I reverted back to old eating habits and boom! I’m sick again. Carpal tunnel surgery, tendinitis surgery, trigger finger surgery, injections in my back and neck… you get the picture. I’m doing the elimination diet and taking quality supplements like colostrum, beef organs, among vitamins d, c, bs, magnesium… Thank you Dr. Hyman for your hard work and dedication to improving our health and sharing this valuable knowledge and information.

I’ve been diagnosed with an auto immune liver disease. This was shown in a liver biopsy. I’ve been a health food nut for over 30 years and have a very clean diet. When I first came down with jaundice five weeks ago, I even got more strict with my diet, drinking green juices, mostly fruits and vegetables and a little bit of olive oil and and a millet bread made from a local bakery. My bilirubin has gone down. My ALT and AST were 30 times higher than normal. Now they are 20 times higher than normal. So even though they are improving, the doctor believes I need to get on prednisone immediately. I want to keep doing what I’ve been doing because it seems to be working. What are your thoughts?

I've been trying to encourage her to consider functional / restorative medicine, but you really have to be ready for that as an individual - it takes a lot of commitment and an upheaval of (typically) years of bad habits and diets. She's finally ready to start after her doctors continue giving the same answers: essentially "we don't know, here's another medication." Our issue has been ease and balance - we're trying to learn what meals/ingredients we can make, while also being able to still go out with friends if we'd like, or if we're traveling. I would love to work with a functional medicine doctor. Unfortunately where I live, Functional Medicine is 100% private healthcare and I was quoted $50,000 for 6 months of treatment, as everything from tests to pharmaceutical medicines to supplements to re-testing is all out-of-pocket expenses, aside from the hourly rate for the doctor. My insurance covers nothing outside of conventional medicine, I don't make enough money to cover the monthly costs, and I can't even borrow that amount, so Functional Medicine is unfortunately out of my reach. Here's hoping others have more access to Functional Medicine than we do in Canada. Seems like true healthcare is only for the rich here, unfortunately.

All living organisms, including humans, there are different types of species, so diseases vary according to the type of organism. Therefore, I identified vitiligo and psoriasis, as well as heart disease and death from cardiac arrest, more among the Aryan or Germanic race. This is not a general measurement, but their percentage of such diseases is high, I think. There is a specific programming for each body according to the type of organism and its original location

All Big Pharma can do is hand out chemicals (I learned in grade school chemicals cause chemical reactions) you take the first chemical, in a few months you'll another chemical and pretty soon people are looking at a plethora of chemicals in medicine cabinet. No thank, growing up on a farm I learned about many natural remedies (which Dr's can't make any money on) and learn about soo many through the wonderful naturapathic Dr.s like Dr Hyman. Barbara Oneill out of Australia has many herbal remedies and also herbs that prevent. Thanks to all the wonderful people on KZread, we can edify our own health.

What was her main source of calories in this diet? Im trying carnivore to work on fixing my gut inflammation with high ANA scores (long time GERD/Silent reflux/severe bloating and gastritis). My problem is getting enough calories to not lose too much weight while on carnivore. Im currently 5'9" at 130lbs, normally 140 when on carbs. It seems each time i go into ketosis or start to, i get so weak and lethargic. I get diarrhea to the point of losing a bunch of water weight. I always get scared enough at this point ot bring fruit back in for carbs to offset it. Just seems to be an endless cycle. What ended up working for her diet wise?
