Lyrics:
I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was a foot-loose man
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
You get what you need
Oh, yeah
And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singin’ “We’re gonna vent our frustration
If we don’t, we’re gonna blow a fifty-amp fuse
Sing it to me now
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
You get what you need
I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standin’ in line with Mr. Jimmy
A-man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda;
My favorite flavor, cherry red,
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me,
And that was “dead.”
I said to him
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you might find,
You get what you need
I was her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands.
Say it!
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well, you just might find,
You get what you need

I’m here at 2:15pm and this song just hit me during the hardest times. My father just passed away due to the coronavirus. As he was fighting for his life for 2 weeks straight and a bunch of prayers. He passed away without having to say one last word to his kids. This song hits because you can’t always get what you want in life, but if you try and keep moving forward you can find light at the end of the tunnel..

I always did this to my daughter when she was too because we also could not afford much. I'm actually here to get the link and send it to her since she is now an adult and id love for her to listen to the entire song. 😆 hopefully I didn't traumatize her too much with it. I didnt expect to see other parents or even children of parents that did this when I came here. Its wild. I'm glad you were able to listen now and have a positive memory of your father. Take care
My wife and I put our 2 1/2 year old twin girls down for a nap a few months ago. One refused to sleep, so I brought her downstairs. She loves music, so I asked our music device to play classic rock. My daughter started playing in a little tent castle my wife set up for her in our living room. We have been taking her to a speech therapist for some months because she has been having difficulty verbalizing like our other twin daughter. So there I was, sitting on the couch thinking, and worrying, and worrying about my daughter - and wishing she would verbalize more. At that moment, the Rolling Stones song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” started playing. My daughter poked her head out of the tent, and she just looked at me … and she smiled. And I realize, she is just perfect the way she is, and she will learn to speak more in her own time. I am so lucky to have my children. “You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need, ah yeah.” So true. Count your blessings.

@mikebrown1485 --- that's a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing that. I am a retired preschool teacher, and your daughter will eventually verbalize when she reaches that developmental stage, or I should say her stage of development, in her time....I used to sing this song to my preschool class whenever they were fighting over not getting exactly what they wanted when they wanted it, and in just a few months, my entire class knew the words. In November one year, at parent teacher conferences, one of my parents said his son was singing it at home by himself and he laughed and asked him where he learned it, and his son said ms. mckinnie taught it to me and he said he started cracking up laughing.... Music makes a huge difference in everyone's lives and it's a great way to teach kids patterns and also math, as music is essentially mathematical in structure and design... Take care 🌹✨💜

My boy was a late talker. He vocabulary was less than a 1/3 of his age group. His speech therapist told me 3 yrs was the magic number. “When he wants to start, the floodgates will open.” Three yrs and 4 weeks later, the floodgates opened and 17 yrs later, I’d be okay with a little silence 😉. One of the truest songs that the Stones ever put out, it is true "You can't always get what You want."
Growing up in the 1970's, my Father always said he wanted this song played at his funeral. When he saw the film: THE BIG CHILL in 1983, he cried. The film opens at a Funeral-- set to this ROLLING STONES' CLASSIC SONG. This song is iconic.
Thank you Mister Watts. Vaya con dios sir. 😔
So many intricate layers to the song, each one a delight to follow. What a rock masterpiece
Winter Break 1969 we played album after album. I lost count of how many times we put the Let It Bleed album on. It was new to all of us and just fantastic. This was the closing track and worked perfectly that way.
The whole track is incredible but the section from 4:18 where the choir comes in and holds that note... it sends shivers down me every time. It's marvellous! :D

That’s right, we can’t always get what we want but if we try sometimes, we might find, we get what we need. Great song by The Rolling Stones🎧

For some inexplicable reason, this song ALWAYS reminds me of an elusive girlfriend from decades past. I met Mary back in the early 90s while living just outside Washington DC. We were both young, up-and-coming professionals of promise in our respective fields. Mary was a lithesome, brilliant, free-lance journalist with contributions in US News & World Report and other highly-regarded, syndicated print publications. Winsome, slender, perceptive, and with legs up to her neck and piercing blue-eyes that perceived much and missed little, Mary was the kind of woman all men sought, as did I. But Mary had another agenda, one that didn't include love, marriage and all the things that modern women (as they always have) considered impediments to a successful career. Mary rejected my romantic overtures, but was tactful enough to do so in such a way as to remain a close friend and confident. I didn't mind since I knew the sea was full of fish, and female companionship, so I was content to be her back-up when she needed a date somewhere with someone who wouldn't try get into her shorts at the end of the evening. Together we had many splendid outings, from parties at Embassy's and the World Bank to steeple chases in the Virginia country side. Indeed, even when I attend those events now, I still half expect to see her there, with her long blonde hair flowing, glittering in the iridescent sun, surrounded by admirers. And I have to say, in that capacity as a friend, we had tremendous fun. No relationship complications, no fights, we were pretty much like brother and sister (in fact, we both introduced the other to people as just that). In the end, I finally met the woman of my dreams, to whom I've been married for some 23 years now. But I still hold dear those memories of Mary, of what was and what might have been. There's not a street corner or sidewalk in Georgetown or Old Town, Alexandria that doesn't evoke memories of our time together. Sadly, Mary passed away a few years back of cancer. It came as a shock as I had spoken to her only a couple weeks before her passing and she sounded as strong and vibrant as ever. The funny thing is, after her passing, one of her friends confided that Mary had always adored me. I miss her every day, or perhaps it was the magic of our youth that I miss now and of lives free from consequences, but at any rate, Mary was the one thing in life that I wanted but couldn't get, but in exchange, I got what I needed. Thanks, Mary...and now through the past, darkly, she comes. :-)

I first heard this song 50 years ago and fell in love with it immediately. Especially the chorus at the beginning. This particular video is the best that I have found on this song.
I wonder if an artist in 2020 could convince his producers to let him open a song with a choir and a french horn solo. Especially if you were a blues-rock band. Tremendous creativity. Bring back the sixties!

Liam Gallagher brought it back last Friday. The first song on his new album 'c'mon you know' is basically his version of 'you can't always get what you want'.
Classic Mick Jagger, telling the truth you can't always get what you want ,what a profound statement for the history books❤❤
As a young kid, the meaning behind this song made a big impression on me. Even now, the lyrics keep my life on track.

We all love that Chorus! But! “I saw her today at the reception A glass of wine in her hand I knew she would meet her connection At her feet was her footloose man” to “I saw her today at the reception In her glass was a bleeding man She was practiced at the art of deception Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands, sing it” Just hits me right in my feels. ❤

Life is full of painful events, and it sometimes makes you feel like you can't get over these things like complete darkness. But, As We don't get the feeling of beauty through the good events, life itself is valuable from our imperfection, which is like the way that We can find out how marvelous the light becomes through the dark.

You are so true. The stones are doing a tour in St. Louis on the 26th of September this year. Charlie( drummer) won't be there for the 1st time since 1969, but is 80 and recovering from emergency surgery. Then Charlotte, etc. I'm from Missouri and would love to go, but later they'll be in Nashville as well and that's closer to Kentucky, where I moved to. Love The Stones. 💜

There is Brown Sugar, Beast of Burden, Paint it black, Start me up, Sympathy for the Devil or Tumblin Dice...but nothing beats this masterpiece. For me personally this is the definition of the Stones. But that's debatable haha. I just love it. R.I.P. Charlie

I remember a disaster in my life only a few short years ago and the catharsis I felt at that orchestral part at 4:10. Its a few years later and I am here surviving, with a whole other set of different problems. It will be OK.
My dad sings this to me when he doesnt let me do something or use something but since he forgets that part of the lyric that says "but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need", i sing that right back at him😁

Ernesto Segundo, you made me guffaw. I AM a dad and I do sing this lyric 3 times as in the song to my 3 boys on occasion for the same reason, but I make sure to add the counterpoint lyric because it talks about TRYING (i.e., laboring) to get ultimately what you NEED, not necessarily what you WANT. I loved hearing the viewpoint of the other side in your post. You cracked me up!

Ernesto Segundo if you wanted something you needed, and made a good argument regarding the need, I suppose I would lean towards giving it to you. Because the good argument would constitute “trying” as the song says. As long as I could REASONABLY afford it. Good rejoinder.

In the summer months of 2019, Spotify harassed me with this song. Every daily mix I played, it was there. Every recommended playlist? It was there. I could not escape it. Then in late August of that year, I finally succumbed to the Spotify algorithm. Oh my God. I'm so glad I did. This song gives me a sense of nostalgia that I can't quite explain, and a sense of reassurance. I listen to it whenever I feel blue or just need a pick me up, and I also play it whenever. The beginning is wonderful, so is the acoustic section at 0:53-2:03 and so 3:28-3:49 and 4:16-4:30 AND 5:44 to the end. Actually, I stand corrected: 0:00-7:30 is the most magnificent part. Enjoy first-time listeners and thousand-time listeners alike! Edit: I was also supposed to see them in May, but of course that was canceled, and overall this song has helped me get through the hardships of 2020 and beyond.
So many great songs by the Stones, this one might just be their best one. And I can say that while not necessarily feeling the it's my favorite, but it's just so uplifting and free. I've heard it countless times over my life but never really thought about it until this listen and it just hit me how freaking great it is.
