The band covered this brilliantly in their early days. I'm glad they covered it well here, in front of the master himself. R.I.P. Solomon.

So cool to see Solomon singing his signature song with the Stones… would have loved to have seen them back when they opened their shows with this great number, but it was long before my concert going days!

First time I saw Solomon Burke was at the Charlotte Coliseum in 1964. He did a duet with Sugar Pie Desanto that literally brought the house down.

I just happened to see this video and noticed the Stones say this show was in Paris BUT I was there as part of Solomon's band. We opened the show and it was at the Wiltern Theater in LA. It was a amazing to see Mick's knees buckle under the weight of Solomon's cloak....(maybe there is some parallel meaning behind that?) My wife Brooks and I watched this part of the show while helping hold Solomon's height-challenged wife, Sunday, up high enough to see over the heads of the crowd....We love you Bishop!

  • @Bernacide

Agreed! The cloak thing was obviously a bit of a debacle haha But, I would assume, given the amount of R&B influence in their music, the last thing Mick meant to do was be disrespectful! Makes even more sense if it was as heavy as he said. Mick can't sit still long enough to don a heavy cape! 😜

I went back a few times to watch when Solomon left the stage and I'm thinking there's always a chance he couldn't make it any longer on stage without some sort of rest/relief. NO DISRESPECT INTENDED just being realistic. It's gotta be HOT AS HELL under those lights combined with the energy it takes to sing. Without active training, that's a rough combo even for the healthiest young person.

Wow it's really hard to believe that the Stones can be soooooooo disrespectful- especially Mick who has gone on record whenever possible to confess his debt to the great soul singers like Solomon Burke, James etc. who according to him he would watch perform for hours at places like the Apollo. Of course he never mentions getting up on stage with them. Maybe he was to awestruck like the great John Lennon who was so scared to follow Little Richard that he went back stage and vomited. NO class

Humans have been known to do some peculiar, unexpected and rather regrettable things while in the presence of those we look up to. Maybe it was a combo of nerves and adrenaline, etc. Mick DID atleast admit that he regretted not responding in a more "gentlemanly" way.
