What made "No Expectations" wonderful was the simple, clean and sincere instrumentals by Keith, Brian and Nicky coupled with Mick's relaxed natural singing voice. The tempo of the song is very conducive to reflection, regret and sweet serenity. This song alone dispels the myth that the group was only capable of raucous, raunchy rock numbers. To me, the very last piano notes were always the perfect ending to a wonderfully mellow musical composition.

Yes, he clearly says "Alright, I didn't do a good one, Stew, I wanted to finish it somewhere". And the fact that Keith is laughing is a dead giveaway that Stew had just delivered one of his famous putdowns to Jagger and the others to keep them humble and trying harder. But Stew may have been just listening in the recording booth. The Wikipedia page on the song lists Hopkins on both piano and organ. And that tender, evocative style of piano playing is definitely not Stew's style. So I'm sticking with Nicky Hopkins.

This was one of the last songs he played on with the band. Jagger has said he’d come in too far gone to contribute anything, yet the odd time and as in this case, he’d be brilliant. He’s playing the slide guitar here.

A great a fitting tribute to Brian Jones - who played a massively important part in the history of The Greatest Rock n Roll Band In The World - The Rolling Stones. Brian's legacy is full to bursting. He was a very special guy - flawed - but special. Hugely talented. Thanx for the splendid tribute. Peace !! Rx

Well, I guess many of us lost in a methaphoric/retrospective kind of way, as he passed away over 50 years ago, plus at the very least 10 years old to have any appreciation of the music means only people well over 60, or even 65, can say that literally.

Jones had the opportunity to write a song for the recording band he supposedly "led" for seven years. He never wrote one singe song. If he truly had anything to contribute creatively he fruitlessly squandered the chance to express it. He was no genius by any standard. His musical ability was remarkable only in how mediocre it was. Jones was an arrogant, self centered, egotistical and lazy manipulator of those around him. He actually contributed very little to the band before he was fired and killed himself.

@@elenikorkodelaki2695 I'm sorry Eleni. I appreciate that you probably loved the way he looked, but sadly Brian was the Pete Best of the Rolling Stones. He was a founding member but he just wasn't very talented, and to keep the band successful he had to go. He just wasn't cutting it.

I was at the Hard Rock cafe and saw a fur coat that had belonged to Brian Jones. I had seen a picture of him wearing it. He was TINY!! I remembered that at age 13 I was totally besotted with him. He was the most handsome member of the Stones. Of course he was quite a Don Juan. I just wish he could have gotten some help.

If Jones hadn't drown in his swimming pool that night he wouldn't have lived much longer. On autopsy it was found that his liver was failing from a decade of unbridle drug abuse and alcoholism. As Keith so eloquently put it..." some of us just weren't meant to make it to 70. It was easy to see early on that Brian was one of them. Ya just knew it."

Great video...Brian is the Stone some of us have never seen, and I can tell he was a true member of the soul of the band. We love Roonie, and we are thankful for Mick Taylor and his slide guitar, but maybe the Stone needed a bit more of the rebelliousness and the musical instrumentality of Brian

This is the pure, unadulterated Rolling Stones. Brian Jones was the founder.

This is a very nice tribute to Brian Jones. The mood of the song is slow and lethargic. It is so beautiful in all of it's sadness. I believe Brian was quite saddened in his state of mind at this point in life for many reasons, but when he heard this song being played in the studio he must of instantly connected with it and this beautiful slide guitar came out of him.

Long Live Brian Jones.

Can you imagine Ruby Tuesday without the recorder, Under My Thumb without marimbas, Lady Jane without dulcimer, 2000 Light Years with out mellotron,We love You without the mid eastern inspired brilliant freak out at the end,the sitar on Street Fighting Man and Paint it Black and on and on with out even mentioning his virtuoso blues harp (and real harp too!) and slide guitar .He had the spice that made the early period so magical as George Martin did for the Beatles.

There's a handwriting letter, answering to Maureen Pettifer (a fan), where Brian talk about the amalgation of two bands, his R&B band and the other being a group run by Mick and Keith wich became the Stones. Not only one founder. Unfortunately Brian was his worse enemy.

Brian's slide work here shows that he had the taste and discrimimation to make good musical choices. You can hear that, too, on his sharp harmonica solo on "2120 South Michigan Avenue." I've always wondered whether he mightn't have been a really consequential soloist on some instrument-guitar, maybe-if he'd just applied himself. But then self-discipline wasn't really Brian's forte. Such a tantalizing what-if in this final testament…

His father wasn't approving of him as a person. There was probablyy some weird shit going on in his home. That's a long time ago.

Amongst other Jimi Hendrix bootlegs i cant find that i lost in a fire, i also lost my copy of Bastards Banquet. That was just the bootleg that had the real studio demos i believe. And like this song its here & now its gone.

I love playing this song with bottleneck slide in open E. I'm quite honored to be doing Brian's slide work..

From my recollection of the first wave of the British Invasion in 1964, Brian Jones was the only musician to play slide guitar. Listen to “I Wanna Be Your Man”cover of the Beatles.....Great electric slide guitar. It was maybe two years later before any other rock guitar players started playing slide. And then Brian was among the first to play sitar, mellotron, dulcimer......

I think Brian was gone by the time this song debuted. I like it from the movie about a guy who was in prison in California. He was an amazing runner and just when he was on his way to the Olympics he was not let out.

You can see brian's jealousy by his snide comments on early shows like the Mike Douglas show. Brian had an isue with Mick, tried to turn keith on him and Andrew set things straight putting Mick and keith to write, the fact they could write well together is the final nail in the coffin for Brian Jones as leader of the band. Great talent and nice ornamentation but listen to those who were there is what I tell these fantatics, rarely do they write back. People don't like having their eyes opened to the truth when they're fixed on their illusuions. I'm on a mission to set straight some of the facts that are available. I do not claim to know the whole truth but I do know the bullshit and it's easy to set that straight. Did Brian deserve more credit? Maybe but even from the claims I've heard it's minimal, debateble and only on a handful of wonderful songs but not enough to make a strong claim. We know that Jagger/Richard wrote hundred of brilliant song with no claims by anyone else. We know that they may have been tight and stingy about giving some co-credit on a few, not extraordinary in the music business. Satisfaction which forever put the Stones on the map was penned by Jagger with Keith's riff. Brian hated the song, probably 'cause he wasn't part of it. I honestly think Nicky Hopkins and Bobby Keys had as much an influence on the Stones later success if not more than Brian Jones but still not worthy of writing co-credits, maybe Nicky Hopkins? A sax solo can be brilliant but it's not the compostion. Jimmy Miller's production is also a key element to the Stones further success but at the end of the day to take anything away from Mick and Keith is just plain stupid. You very well may know all this and more but this is what other fans should know when they hear all this Brian Jones cultists noise. Brian should be remembered for what he did do, not the exaggerations or flat out lies from his cult which later only damage the man's worthiness in history.

I'm very curious about what Brian thought about his role within the band. Was he interested in sharing the vocals or the attention with Mick ? Were they friends, or just members of the same business?

Ive always wondered if there was a relation between Brian Jones, and John Paul Jones of Led Zep. There is definitely a resemblance. And both played numerous instruments.

They were not related. John Paul Jones real name is John Baldwin and not Jones.

Beautiful song about a troubled needy little boy who did work to get where he was. A beautiful memoir and in good taste in the writing. I wonder who wrote it.

Mich Jagger is truly one of the world's finest poets when he's on. A much better lyricist than singer or performer, for me anyway. This song and "Sympathy" on the same album! Not to mention "Salt of The Earth" and everything else

As much as I admired Brian Jones for his musicianship, that ain't him playing slide. That's Ry Cooder. Want to hear what Brian sounds like, attempting to play like Ry Cooder? Take a listen to the Stones' London concert version of "No Expectations." 12 November 1968. The rest of the musicians on that song, live, are spot on. Brian struggles mightily, sounding like he's just learning that part. Cooder was uncredited on many, many Stones songs. No one in that band before or since has ever played slide that well. When they play that song live now, Woodie and Keef BOTH try to play that slide part, at the same time. And it still doesn't capture Ry's brilliance.

Ry Cooder didn't even enter the Stones picture until the Let it Bleed sessions in early 1969. He and Mick didn't even meet until around the fall of 1968. The Beggar's Banquet sessions occurred in the spring of 1968. This is Brian. The reason Brian struggles with the part at the Rock N' Roll Circus on December 11th 1968 is because 1) The segment was shot at 4am. The Stones as a whole were exhausted after two days of rehearsals and multiple takes of each song for the film 2) Brian was emotionally broken and worn out after being on trial on a second drug bust. So get the fuck out of here with your revisionist BS.

The Stones appeared on The David Frost show in November 1968 miming to a backing track for Sympathy For The Devil. They only played 2 songs (Jumping Jack Flash and Satisfaction) live at Wembley in May 1968 and then made Rock N Roll Circus TV film in December 1968 which is Brian's last live performance. Idiot!

Right and also Brian's performance at the Rock N' Roll Circus is due to several factors: Physical exhaustion (the band didn't start playing until 4am and did at least 6 takes of each song. That's 24 or more songs played basically); Emotional exhaustion (he had just been on trial and was not getting along with the Stones); It was his first time playing the song live (Look at how messy the Stones' first show without Brian at Hyde Park was - does that mean they didn't play on the songs themselves?); and lack of practice. No Expectations was recorded around April or May 1968, and probably not performed again by the band until the RnR Circus. And the band also performed it in a different key than it was recorded in. All factors that would make Brian's performance a little shaky at the Circus. But everyone from Mick Jagger to Jimmy Miller and Keith Richards have said Brian came up with and played this lovely slide. Ry Cooder played on exactly one Stones' song - Sister Morphine.
