I have always admired Rolex from afar. I will never be able to afford one, but that doesn't make me angry or hate anyone who can. Buy what you like and can afford. Same goes with cars, boats, homes, etc.

I have an LN and absolutely love it. I’ve owned 2 prior iterations of black sub dates over the years and feel this does very well. You just can’t go wrong with a simple black submariner date. It’s basic yet robust! A permanent member of my collection.

I just got my Sub yesterday. Unequivocally, the best watch I’ve ever owned! Fits amazing, looks amazing and a lifelong dream of owning one! :)

I’ve loved the sub all my life. My grandfather used to repair them for clients. So was smitten as a young kid watching him work on them. A timeless classic.

I never really understood the hype behind the submariner until I tried one on the other day. Is it a bit overpriced? Yes. But would I buy one if my AD offered me one right now? Also yes.

@@timcarlstrand5890i’d say yes, it’s overpriced. But so are many other things that we’d still buy. It’s not so overpriced that i wouldn’t buty it (and this is a bit contradictory) that i would say it’s not worth it. IMO the adequate price would be 5-8 thousand and not 9.5k

Their whole AD distribution/grey market price hiking is really annoying...I can't imagine having to go in and beg someone for a year to pay 10-12k for a wrist watch...It is basically the same reason why Jay Leno says he will never buy a Ferrari...You basically have to beg them for the pleasure to get to spend obscene amounts of money on their product....

Great take. Hard to avoid the hype, but not fall prey to the anti-hype hate either! Hype aside, the Sub is a great watch, no doubt. The current ref is the best tool diver yet, but the most expensive; the least dress versatile, yet the most luxurious. Odd paradoxes. Also, for all the clasp and bracelet get a lot of love (and they are exceptionally well made) the large amount of adjustment is included to fit over a wetsuit, but it won't fit over a wetsuit if you've used the micro adjust to get the fit. It needs independent adjustment. Half link helps, but not perfect.

yep I think some people forget that not letting your opinions be dictated by hype also means not hating on something just because it's "overhyped" or what have you. Not that there aren't many reasonable gripes people can have with rolex, just there's definitely a lot of sentiment which resembles the former.

The Submariner deserves the respect simply because all other watch brands have tried to replicate it one way or another. I’m a Grand Seiko fan, but I won’t buy their diver watch because it feels too much like a knockoff of the Submariner. I’d rather strive for the real thing.

But the Submariner is replicated of the Fifty Fathoms. It's simply marketing. That being said, it is a good watch. (I own a Cermit) My preference is the Seamaster. But that's a personal choice.

For 12.1k you’ll be better off paying a little bit more for a Fifty Fathoms. And If you don’t want to spend that much money, go buy a SMP300 for half the price.

I’ve got a Submariner and GMT Master II that I bought from an AD from the window in the shop and managed to get a discount. How times have changed.

In 1998, I bought my first Sub for $2750, and that was with a 20% discount...I'd walked in to buy a used one they'd had on display, saw it wasn't there, and turned around to leave. The owner caught me before I got to the door and asked me what I was looking for...after I told him, he said, "I've got five new ones in stock and it's almost Christmas, let me see what I can do." Wore it hard for over 15 years before it gave up the ghost and I traded it for a GMT...got $2850 for trade-in value. How times have changed.

17 years for the Sub, 7 years for the GMT. I think I got the Sub for about £2000 and the GMT for £5700 (got a free Rolex wallet with it too).

I went for a 116900. Good size, pop of colour, added heft due to the Faraday cage, and the case is a much nicer shape than subs imo but it's still a sports professional model

On august seventh of twenty twenty three I went and put in my name for the rolex submariner date in black but I hadn't heard anything back​. I called the authorized dealer 3 weeks ago and told him I was still interested and he said he could get me the watch in 2 months guaranteed. Just in time for my wedding@Z3CK5

No way, speedmaster is a much more iconic watch. Yeah submariner became the archetype of a modern diver watch but because of that there are thousands of models that look very similar to it. Meanwhile you can recognize a speedmaster from a mile away and there is not a single watch that manages to imitate it.

Like it or not, the Sub is the archetype by which all other dive watches are measured and instantly recognizable...for more than a Speedmaster. My mother knows what a Rolex Sub is. No one is trying to immitate the Speedmaster, which speaks volumes. Omega and Swatch have dialuted the Speedmaster to such an extent over the years, I don't think anyone takes it seriously anymore.

SpeedMaster you can buy at AD and with discount. Sub, a lot harder to buy at retail if you can get one. I would think iconic is harder to obtain.

@@johnt2694 huh being iconic doesn't have anything to do with being hard to get. Exclusive, that's the word you're looking for. McDonald's and Coca cola logos are iconic but their products are extremely easy to get 😉

My Rolex Oyster Precision ( manual wind) had solid links in the bracelet the same as the current models, I bought mine in 1982! So the fold and clasp links were earlier.

The way the Rolex AD treat their customer, I've lost interest too.

iconic design of course, a bit too big for my 6inch wrists, althougth that generous glidelock system would make it fit. As you said, I totally agree, for the retail price, they are fantastic luxury watches. But given the demand, the pre-owned market prices, and the terrible AD buying experience, I would never buy one unless I had masses of disposable income. The swiss luxury watches I hope I can attain in the future is that from brands such as omega, breitling and even tudor. I feel like tudor is becoming what rolex once was.

Firstly, Starbucks suck big time nowadays. Secondly, the 41mm Sub is too big for my wrist size. Who makes the lug width 21mm?? Stupid decision!!! The clasp is so huge for no reason. I really like the previous generation 40mm. I am considering buying a pre-owned 40mm from 2017.

San Martin and others do great homages of the 16610 case shape subs but with modern ceramic bezels and quality glidelock clasps. I wouldn’t pay for a Rolex 16610 and put up with the jangly bracelet and aluminium bezel, and the risk of getting a frankenwatch. The Ginault Ocean Rover II is also a great option.

As for the clasp - there is a reason. Rolex Oyster links are really long and without half links, you need a fairly substantial clasp to ensure that everyone can get a good fit. If they made their links shorter or included half links, then they could get away with a shorter clasp. I think they’d keep it long though so that it can extend over a wetsuit.

The 41mm wears similar to the 40mm. I’ve tried on both back to back and I actually preferred how the 41mm sat on my wrist. Felt more proportional

I think the same stock video is used 10-12 times. I wish you could get your hands on the watch for reviews.

Wish there was a sub-40mm version (outside of the vintage models). I really don't think I can swing 41mm. Incredible and iconic watch for sure but for me, I genuinely think the BB54 is the better buy. Which feels crazy to say.

have you been able to try one on? I own both the 40mm and the 41mm models. they wear exactly the same and i have a 16.5CM wrist. The 41mm has a slightly larger clasp but thats really the only difference i feel

Try a 14060M. You can still get watches produced / sold in 2012. It's a thoroughly modern Sub with a 3130 movement, blue parachrom hairspring, and superlative COSC performance, in the old school 40mm case with aluminium bezel insert.

Still favor Rolex however love Tudor as well and the Pelagos 39 is my beater/daily wear. I have the pro but my iconic explorer 39 full lume, SD 16600 and 116600 (40mm) see little wrist time. Not a fan of the cyclops so I sold 4 Rolex during the late insanity late last yr and early this yr. Do not miss them

Which one is your first preference

It was my grail watch. It started my love for Rolex. I got one, but eventually I didn't feel the love anymore. Eventually, I sold it and got a Deepsea instead. That one will stay with me forever I hope.

I decided that I wanted to get a luxury watch to celebrate some work milestones and holy cow I’ve gone down the rabbit hole on watches. I had no clue there was such a following. Likely only able to get the wife to approve one purchase so I’m leaning towards the submariner over the Omega moon watch and aqua terra. Now I just want them all! Also, being new to this I’m blown away that you can’t just walk into an AD and buy a watch. You would think the price alone would make it exclusive enough. I didn’t know you also had to sell yourself to the AD in order to have the option to buy one.

maybe go trusted grey market. 3-5k premium but still well worth it in the long run. Rolex datejusts from the 1990s are still selling for 4-7k. A sub holds value even higher. Good luck!

Update: After 4 months I was offered a black submariner date after getting some spend history up at my AD. So happy with this watch and never want to take it off. Also, I underestimated how much I would use the glide lock. It’s really nice to be able to make on the fly adjustments.

I enjoyed this video Teddy after thinking I've seen every video possible about subs. I do have a question about another Rollie, will we ever get an option for an oysterflex on an Explorer II ? I think that would be great pairing. Thanks

Nobody knows. But so far the oysterflex has only come on precious metal watches, for what it’s worth.

Nobody ever tells us about AR coatings on a Sub. Yet for every other watch seems to be very important to mention.

I would love to own a submariner. Its just a little too spicy for my wallet at the moment. The only downside I have with the submariner's design is simply that it's so iconic that almost all other dive watches seem like copycats to me. I don't want to get another watch that every time I look at it reminds me that I don't own a submariner. I'm currently considering in the submariner design space is the Aquis Date by Oris.

Save for the Sub. Don’t compromise. You’ll only buy it later anyway so save your money on the ‘placeholders’. Just my advice having been there & done it.

I won a Rolex Submariner in the 1993 Rolex Spirit of Enterprise competition. I have received two tours of Rolex Geneve HQ plus 20 other service centres.

Can someone please explain why the power reserve being longer is important on something that’s not super complicated to reset (like a perpetual calendar)? The way I see it, a lower power reserve means my watch spends less time ticking (and slowly wearing down it’s internals) when I’m not wearing it. Isn’t that a good thing?

Since then I have bought several watches from Seiko, Omega, and Breitling, and like each of them for different reasons, but my sentimental favorite is still my nearly 40 year old Rolex. I retired a couple of years ago and treated myself to a Rolex Presidential. While I love the watch, I live in an inner city, and hesitate to wear it out in public because of it’s value, and how much crime is in my city, so it spends most of its time in my safe:-(

Love it but if you want a modern but still wearable like pre-ceramic Rolex submariner… the only option would be the Rolex Sea Dweller 116600 SD4K…

I own a GMT Maater II, will get a Submariner soon - it’s the greatest watch ever made (not from a pure horological perspective) - it’s just perfection, iconic perfection.

Thanks Teddy. I have had my black sub for 11 years now and I consider the best attribute of the watch is the fact that I can do just about anything with it on and not worry. I wear this watch every day and could get hit by a bus and know it would fair a lot better than I would. I always feels somewhat nervous when I'm wearing another piece such as my Grand Seika in the fear that it will somehow get scratched or damaged. This watch in my opinion as the most beautiful tank ever made. Thank you.

The quality of the new sub is just on another level. I own one and also the Omega seamaster and you can feel the price difference. Still Omega is my daily driver.

I know right, the sub is on a sub level. Was hold both recently, Omega fill the ceramic bezel engraving, Rolex doesn't and catches dirt. The case shape of the Rolex lacks dimension and creates boring shape, the lyre lugs on Omega creates more surface angles and shape. The sub still has a 1960's style flat lacquered dial, the depth of the engraved ceramic dial on Omega is fantastic. I noticed on the two I was holding Omega even get the logo on the crown to line up when screws down. Rolex do not pay that kind of attention. And then there's the movement, even if we ignore the problematic faults Rolex's are suffering, the METAS certification when you drill down is far superior standard

The bezel rotation is far superior on Rolex, when you knock with your nail on Omega bezel it feels empty, Rolex not. Sure style is more original and not changed every few years like Omega. Both are great, just Rolex has higher quality standard.

That movement is a failure, It been and issue for over 7 years still no fix, still no reviewers willing to speak about it. Marketing is an amazing strategy. Makes you realise phrases like ' Bezel rotation superior' has no objective measure, just a bunch of biased people making a claim that can't be varified either way. Just compare a real Rolex with a fake Chinese one, their close aren't they, tell me, are the Chinese that good, or perhaps is the Rolex just that simple and average build quality. Rolex have mastered the marketing over build quality and business is good, because most people just care about branding

@@ALL-il1sw i can't argue with that, marketing is a powerful tool and they are the masters. We the people are more often than not blind and fall for that trap. In my case Omega has 80 % of wrist time.

Good plan. Get that for the wife & then your call for the Sub will surely come quicker.

It's ridiculous. I've been waiting for a year and still nothing from the AD. Might as well just buy an omega seamaster diver and save the money for something else.

I have one of these and a SM300 that I rotate daily. Sub is more accurate, scratches more easily, the Omega has better lume.

Great video, as usual. Hype aside and haters aside, modern Submariners are great. I own a 114060 and 126610LV Mark 1 bezel so I am not speaking out of turn.

Are there in fact 2 bezel colors for the 126610LV now? Adrian was the one to release that info on his channel sometime this year when he saw the new one in Geneva, vut many online sources later claimed it was just the light and that the green was still the same. When i recently searched i found no evidence to prove that the green of the 126610LV had changed

A nice watch- but I prefer the GMT II. The sub is nice- but it’s not twice (or three times) the watch the Seamaster 300 is.

I have this exact watch and am astonished at how good it is. Good looking, wears wonderfully on my 7.25 inch wrist, accurate, stylish etc. I wear it every day and feel privileged to have been able to buy one.

Even Keanu Reeves has a black Sub. That only gives Rolex enough moral redemption. Other than that, haters will hate.

If you wish that you could go back 30 years and buy a Rolex when they were affordable-luxury watches that you could buy in store, you can- they are called Tudor. Rolex are now a peice of shiny jewelry, even the sub. Just buy a Pelagos 39 or a Black bay 58 blue instead. The only justification I can see for buying the Sub now is for showing off or investment (questionable), if you want a great tool diver like the 90s subs, buy a Tudor.

My sub runs -.8s/day after 20 months. 32XX movements have been in circulation for over 8yrs and quite honestly, the ones complaining about them, seem to be those who have the equipment to run these on and are extremely anal retentive over these types of variations. If the concern is a potentially dead watch...I have had a DJ41 for 4 yrs that hasn't died yet on consistent wear and/wind. The average owner isn't worried about these deviations and still use their phones for time accuracy despite wearing a watch. I don't say this as an excuse, but rather as reasons why perhaps reports are isolated to a very small percentage of WIS on an even more niche Rolex message board in the age of Social Media. Rolex also makes quiet minor adjustments to movements every year or so on new releases, as they learn more. So I'd expect those get worked into the movements as minor upgrades to reduce any issues. Unfortunately, at a rate of 1 million watches per year being produced, and over an 8yr time span since the 32XX debuted, I'm sorry but "a lot of data" behind it with respect to the Rolex forum community, is a very small sample size in comparison to what's been produced. That's not how failure analysis rates are conducted in an actual manufacturer.

All true. One of THE investment icons of top timepieces. Ok, l have a question. What is the deal with Movado watches? Understood, they are just a fashion brand. I'm not partial to them, but nobody ever mentions them. It seems they don't earn positive ratings if any. Same with Ebel. Why is that? Just asking. No varnish please. Cheers. I've had mine (5513) for a couple of decades more than you've been on Earth! It has painted indices, aluminum bezel insert on a bidirectional friction bezel and lots of marks showing it's been used as intended. It was christened in the lakes of the Experimental Lakes Area on the Canadian shield and it matured under the ice of high Arctic lakes and Arctic Ocean. These new ones are too gentrified for my taste and hold no appeal for me.
