Best thing about the Vostok is the customer service. I told them my second hand on the watch stopped working. So they told me to smack it really hard a couple of times. Unbelievable to see it start ticking again without any problems. It is built like a tractor 😂

I dropped mine once (1 m, carpet) and from -20 s/d it went to -50 s/d. I opened it, tried regulating it using that youtube video, messed up the beat error, had a watchmaker fix it (it cost a third of the watch) and I'm never opening another watch unless I know what I'm doing and have the right tools. Before that it survived: light countryside bike riding and I once took it chainsawing (I'm not repeating the latter).
I had a Japanese friend with a pepsi-bezel Seiko when we were kids (like, early 80s). I didn't remember much about it, just a strong fascination with it and longing to have one. I spent a Summer in Japan with him and his family, and I got a much cheaper, orange-dialed dive watch. But many years later (2010), after I had purchased a few much nicer watches, I remembered the Seiko. Through some online searches I found the SKX and got one. I have a dress watch (B&M) and an upscale dive watch (Blancpain) -- but the watch I wear most is the SKX. I love the look, it feels great on my wrist, and it taps into some emotional pull from decades ago.

I have the pepsi bezel one as shown in the video, but with the jubilee bracelet. Compared to some of my more expensive watches, it's still holds as one of my favorites on the wrist. For $200, it was well worth the buy years ago!
My SKX will never leave my collection. It's just incredible.
Back when I was a child in the Philippines (early 2000s), the SKX is the go-to watch for the people ages 30+ especially those who work for LE, military, construction or any hard labor jobs. Now I regret not buying one when it was still dirt cheap.
Being both a Tool fan and a k-pop fan, it brings me great joy to hear Teddy mention both in one of his videos. Didn't think I could love this channel any more than I already did but this video has proved me wrong haha.

I got my first Seiko recently. Also my first automatic. I went for an SNK361. I really like Seiko.. but I haven't found the SKX all that compelling when compared to the competition. What is it that you love about the watch? Is it just that it's the first of its kind? Or is there some unexplainable "you just have to try one to get it" factor?
@wristviber

@@TrulyZer0 Congrats on your first automatic piece mate! Yeah well the SKX is far from the best option today in terms of bang for your buck. You can find way better watches for way less money these days. What makes the SKX special is the heritage it carries. It used to be the best diver for your money a few years back. It was THE watch for enthusiasts to get into divers with. It wears well for its size and looks stunning. But it discontinued back in 2018 I believe, and since then, the demand has just gone crazy. But it is nothing short of a classic. Quite a legend in many people's eyes. But if I was new to watches, I would not go for the skx because of the premium. For me, my SKX is special because it holds so many memories of adventure. It carries my spirit and that is priceless to me. The SNK361 is a great first automatic in my opinion, so enjoy it, my friend ☺

Wearing my SKX009J while watching your video :). I have many waches (you are guilty on some...), including more expendive brands/models like the Omega Speedmaster and several other more modern Seikos (SPB143, Alpinist, Speedtimer, Presage´s) but there´s something special about the SKX - simple, classic and unpretentious. In fact, I like it so much I have 4 (007/009/0011/013)! Great video, as usual.👍
Thank you for referencing Vince, he definitely deserves more attention.
Very true shortlist, it really reflects the needs of collectors. I was a fan of classical G-Shock models, now I have bought a couple of old Seiko and still keep in mind swiss brands such as Tudor, Gerrard Perregaux, Enicar. What about the same video, but about vintage brands?
Great video, to say I love my SKX009 is an understatement.

One other thing to consider on the amphibia and kommanderski is that models with a date complication won't be a quick set. Not a big deal, at all, if you wear it every day, just something to consider.

I completely understand your thoughts on the SKX. I wanted one back in the day, I never got one, but in todays watch world, no hacking, no hand winding is a no-go for me. With that said, it whole heartedly belongs in the cult following collection. It is a great watch from build to price. My dady bought one NKUWAN and he loves it. It had been there for over 10 years when he went out with it.
Bravo TB!
I am an Amphibia owner since last year and the process to get one described in video is spot on. Shady website, where the watch I wanted had the seconds hand in different colors in the produc photos. The support had a bad english and encouraged me to buy it. When asked they said they would give me a nato strap to it. I ordered it in May and got it in August with no tracking number or estimated time of arrival. This beeing said the watch is amazing, looks better than in pictures, got the NATO strap as a bonus free of charge. I used it this summer for scuba diving and cliff jumping. It is a great beater and I will love this watch for as long as I will live. If in doubt, buy it. Also great video Teddy!

Great fun video. Very true! I am guilty of a couple. My watch obsession started with a seiko skx007' then a 011. Of coarse that led to a number of grand seikos. I am a member of the gs9 club. 😂 The gshock, only have one. The lost island in orange. Just not really interested. My only other digital watch is a 12 yr old timex iron man. Original battery, lost the pushers, still has mud all over from when i fixed a water mainline. Still works. My forever watch!

TB managers to squeeze in both Tool and Vince Carter in a video about watches. That's favorites on favorites for me. Great vid 👍
I know that the Omega Boyz can be pretty rabid too, especially the Seamaster crowd. Oddly enough, Invicta has a pretty rabid following too and I can't say that I blame them. My Grand Diver #3049 is 12 years old and I've NEVER had to open it for any reason. It just keeps on ticking with that immortal Seiko NH35A movement and it's gorgeous. Not bad for $150CAD.
My first watch was a vintage Vostok Komandirskie (Vostok’s field watch). I bought it when I was broke but enamored with the inner workings of mechanical watches and desperate to have one on my wrist. I got it for 80 bucks. A mechanical watch with a real mechanical movement for 80 bucks. It doesn’t get wrist time anymore (mostly due to the risk of RADIUM exposure… these watches are truly insane), but Vostok will always be my first love.
I appreciate the Vince Carter reference for the G-Shock example/mentality. Teddy is cultured lol

I love my SKX and Big Tuna. I miss my Seiko World Time from 1969 that my dad bought me when we lived in Bangkok.
It's very easy to get caught up in the passion of the watch industry. My plan is always to wait a week with any impulse perchase no matter the hype or passion, to see if it's really what I'd want. The same reason I DON'T have an SKX.

Newer movements may enable hacking, hand winding, etc. but I want my dive watch to be rugged, highly water resistant ( 200M or better), legible and have a great unidirectional bezel. A Casio Duro fits the bill ( it is my beater) but I dive with a BFK.

It's easy to get a Vostok directly from the manufacturer in Russia, although their site looks like it was designed in 2000, I guess it's not the case for the world due to the situation. They've increased prices on the basic models by 3-4 bucks this year, not that much if you look at other brands. I have a couple in my set, but I'm definitely in a G-Shock square gang.

Fun video. Thanks. I would add those individuals dedicated to microbrands and nothing else.
My favorite that I cannot stop raving about was one that I believe you may have turned me on to. The 34 mm hand wound Timex Marlin. I only like it at 34 mm and only the silver dial and the Todd Snyder black dial which looks better when you swap out the strap for a brown or even better cognac strap. I actively dislike the California dial version, as well as the larger version and any other variation that Timex has released. Its incredibly elegant and my favorite dress watch with the exception of a Cartier Tank. At around $200 it's a steal. I get the feeling that Timex is phasing it out and its currently out of stock. 34mm is thought to be too small for many, but it really isn't. A dress watch should be small and larger ones look like clown shoes to me. People really seem to resent me for being so enthusiastic about it, but unless you have a really thick wrist, it is so wonderful and wearable.
