The Roland Juno-106 | Quirks and features you probably don't know about
Музыка
The Roland Juno-106 synthesizer can do a lot more than you think. It can use 3 oscillators per voice if you want it to. You can use negative filter envelopes and even use it as a mono synth. And more. I go through some of the more unknown quirks and features. Video tutorial.

Not that it matters, but it's the most pristine 106 I've ever seen. ;-)

The negative envelope sweep sounds good on the 8P too and probably on a lot of synths capable of it. It can make some strange "drippy" sounds playing with the resonance.
My PM-16 pad to MIDI converter was made in September 1990. I remember the day I brought it and my R8m home just in time to get it ready to gig the next night. Thanks for the serial# link! It's fun to look up the old stuff!

Ha-ha.
Hi Espen, thank you for another excellent video. I really appreciate the time and effort you take to share your knowledge and experience. Please may I make a request? Could you please make a video or give some advice on a suitable editor & patch librarian program on PC for 80s & 90s synths? The gear I use includes a Yamaha SY77, Roland MKS50, Oberheim Matrix 1000 etc. Your advice would be much appreciated. PS I'd love to see a video giving your insight and tips for an SY77 too. Many thanks Geoff

Thanks! I don't use patch librarian software. Never did. I've always edited on the synth itself, even the DX7. Never once in the 80s and 90s did I use any librarian software or editors. I've never owned a SY77 or 99 and as such I have no desire to learn them now, just to make a video. So in essence I don't make videos on request, but hopefully I can churn out other videos you might find entertaining none the less.
Just got a 106 that was fully restored, and loving it so far...noticed something odd, though. My fine tune knob didn't seem to be working at all, but then I noticed that the LFO amount slider in the bender area actually acts as the fine tune knob, no idea why...I can only assume it was modded like this in the past, or possibly something mis-wired somewhere...was this something that people used to mod on this synth? Not great, since I need always have that LFO amount slider dead center to keep everything in tune. 0 position is around 45 cents flat, 10 position is around 50 cents sharp, which is pretty much the exact range of the fine tune knob.
Hi Espen great video, do you still have your Alpha Juno 2 or have you replaced it with this awesome looking 106? I know you love the Juno Alpha series.

Still have mine, in a box, needs servicing. Sounds crazy when I play it now but I can’t control anything.

So do I.
Curious to know whether you have any experience with the kiwi mod for the 106? I love using my octatrack lfo's to modulate hardware paramaters via midi cc which seems like it would be a really cool thing to do with the Kiwi 106, seeing as the upgrade allows for midi cc. There's really not many demos of the Kiwi 106 on youtube though, which is making it a little hard to pull the trigger on the upgrade. Would love to know your thoughts

I did a video about the Kiwi for the JX-3P. My position on the Kiwi mods is very clear. ;-)
I had the 106 twice. The sound was ok, not the best for me so i sold it. I have the JX-10 analog monster with programmer and love the sound.

@@ghost_mall Never had the 8P. I think there are some differences. The 10 is warm, deep oberheimish lows/highs, late 80s. But i can also get cutting early 80s sounds with chorus off easily, very 'speak and spell' like. For raw VHS-80s vibes i still have and love my Poly61😋 The 10 is not new but still a fantastic sounding 12voice analog 2osc synth. No need for expensive modern stuff here. Have a nice day!
If only there was a lookup facility that pulled up which famous songs or artists your unit had been used with.

Juno 106 recognizes mod wheel 0-127 values via MIDI. Almost nobody takes this in consideration.
The best tip I could ever give to someone who wants great Juno 106 sounds is, buy a Behinger Deepmind 12.
