The Roddenberry Archive: William Shatner (4K)
Ойын-сауық
The Roddenberry Archive presents a preview of William Shatner’s hours-long testimonial for the archive.
The legendary icon shares his memories, aspirations and intentions in bringing Captain Kirk to life in 1965, portraying his death in 1994 - and his personal views on the future he envisions for this beloved character, including visualizations of his 1995 novel “Ashes of Eden”.
Mr. Shatner was captured holographically, on the eve of his 92nd birthday, within a perfect recreation of the 1979 USS Enterprise bridge, as represented in the archive's database.

@@JohnElizondo I agree. And the same could be said of Bill Shatner himself. He is a "man's man" and I don't think he would know how to be less masculine.
Kirk dying was almost as emotional as Spock dying. It was the end of a great time for classic Trek. The ending of this video is very touching with what could have been featured in this movie, and I'm glad that Spock was able to see it and know his friend finally came to pass. Not to take anything away from all the other captains, but Kirk was the best.

Kirk will always be the captain of the Enterprise. I grew up on Kirk.
I'm 67, born in Montreal. My father told me about taking a french language course with Bill Shatner back in the day. He liked Bill.
Kirk is such a great character - and Shatner a wonderful actor. He was great in Judgement at Nuremberg, and he really made the character of Kirk his own. Also very glad old animosities between the cast could be largely laid to rest. I feel that in the cultural consciousness, the parodies and stereotypes of Kirk have far overshadowed the actual nuance, humor, sense of duty and ethics he brought to the character. I'm very grateful to Mr. Shatner, Gene Roddenberry and all those involved who made Star Trek into what it is - and also to the Roddenberry Archive for keeping the history alive.

He's a great actor who gets unfair criticism. He always struck me as a warm guy and Kirk was a larger than life character because he was played that way and it's down to Shatner's abilities. It's why his portrayal has never been topped since.
Kirk and Spock's relationship was more than friends, they were family. The ending shows how much Spock cared for Kirk, it is very touching.

Shatner has stated he is scared of dying....Kirk doesn't believe in God/Jesus of the Bible, as most hollywood folks do not(at least in public)...He's TRYING to find God, but like so many, they are looking in the wrong place......Nimoy was Jewish, and certainly believed in God, now whether or not he is saved is another matter, but Nimoy seemed to take his beliefs seriously, where as Kirk is more 'all over the place'...
I'm 63, I grew up with Star Trek, I named my first born son James, after Capt Kirk. Star Trek had such an impact on me, I went into Air Force to save money for college. Studied Computer Science in college, worked at NASA, became a Software Architect all because of Star Trek and Capt Kirk. The show instilled in me a spirit of " to go where no one has gone before". William Shatner is so lucid, acute at his age, I admire him even more now. Truly a remarkable man and an inspiring show. May it continue to inspire new generations of Trek fans.

Ha! I love that he essentially got two deaths. A bombastic one aboard a starship, putting himself in the way to save others. Then, the smaller one, which still saved millions. With as larger than life a figure as Kirk is/was, I always liked that his death wasn't going out in some big blaze of glory. It's essentially the end result of one of those Kirk Fu fist fights he was known for in TOS. Worked for me.

I also agree. I've read that people who have flatlined but manage to be revived by physicians often talk about a "white light." When I saw that scene back in 1994, I assumed that Kirk saw the white light envelop everything around him (including Picard) and he was just commenting on that. If you believe he went into the afterlife, perhaps he saw dead friends and relatives on the other side.

NOBODY ELSE was able or is able to play James Tiberius Kirk, because it is William Shatner who brings that character to live with everything Mister Shatner brings of himself into that role. All these subtle nuances and personal traits. A look, a gesture, a word.. or just his sheer presence. He made that perfect fusion between Authority Figure, Father Figure, Best Buddy, the funny guy and also tragic & flawed Hero. His Character of Kirk is beloved by so many for almost 60 years for all the right reasons. All i can say is that all the hard work he put into portraying this role was absolutely worth it. Because it touched a nerve in all of us that made James T. Kirk such an iconic and popular Character, that is referenced countless times in all forms of pop culture and culture in general.

As someone who grew up with TOS since the beginning, I know! and I'm sure so does anyone who really knows about the show. He would have loved to have been involved in more films playing Kirk, so long as it was done right. It was William Shatner that drew the audiences in. Leonard Nimoy gets so much credit and was brought back time and time again, and yet it was he himself that said that he never wanted to play Spock again and suggested that he was killed off in The Wrath of Khan. But as William Shatner pointed out to Nimoy during a special talk show. Had he been serious and honest about killing himself off? Why have the mindmeld with Dr. McCoy before his demise. William Shatner told him that he was just trying to steal the limelight and knew he would be returning in the following film. And he has also acknowledged his fans now, and realised that when he criticised them and told them to get a life! He was wrong. It has taken him many years to get what Star Trek actually means to people, even though he was and still is probably the biggest star of the show. Clearly you don't get it! Maybe you are too young.
