It was said to be able to reach 30mph which is 48km/h. It may not sound fast but locomotives before The Rocket struggled to reach 20km/h and were therefore not practical for transporting people long distances. The speed trial the Rocket competed in was to find a suitable new type of locomotive that could transport passengers fast enough.

It would be incredibly interesting in 12 years time for the bicentenary, to see a re-run of the 'Rainhill Trials' with replica's of all the original loco's.

Gotta say, "The Rocket" design was interesting. It caught my attention since it's one of the oldest steam engines made.

Stephen the rocket (Bob Golding) from Thomas & Friends used to be fast, too, but only in his early days. And he even knows about rail history - when horses hauled cart till steam and diesel-powers were Morden and heritage and electric lines are in service to this very day.

My father died recently before completing a model of the Rocket and this video confirmed exactly what I needed to know: the left eccentric leads the right eccentric by one quarter turn.

womble1981 SORRY to hear that your dad had sadly passed away before completing this true iconic steam locomotive. MAYBE! if you have the skill & knowledge & of course lots & lots of patience to complete the job that was not finished. I did finish the model on my own but the pistons are wrong: both push at the same time. I haven’t rectified it yet because I’m afraid of doing irreversible damage.

Is that steven from Thomas And Friends?

After watching the T&F "Up the hill", I questionted:"Is Rocket really so slow?" After seeing this:"OMG it is slow."

This looks to me simple running machine which still can be produced. Elegant, apparenly no smoke and must be used today on spare railway tracks for fun riding.

The amount of smoke produced is determined by the skill of the fireman tending the furnace. A little combustion theory goes a long way to getting a clean burn and a hot fire with minimal fuel consumption.

We all laugh at historical idiots and "doubting thomases". But yet again people, the people of today who are supposed to be wise, dared to predict that "Tesla will go bankrupt, Spacex will never land a rocket because"the stresses on the fuselage are "unbearable"", that electric cars will never beat gas in performance and price". It was obviously very dumb to doubt the progress but they still did it, and that's because they wholeheartedly believed it. I want them all to be forever remembered as the losers.

Chad, This was a temporary track laid on a pedestrian road closed to traffic between The Albert Memorial and The Royal Albert Hall in Kensington Gardens, London a public park (check out on Google). No one is going to tear up the park to lay track not to mention the expense. The original 'Rocket' is in The Science Museum close by.

So what were locomotives powered by before Rocket? Sails?? Sorry, but the steam machine had been invented long before the locomotive and steam powered vehicles existed in the 1700's already. Check out Cugnot's 1769 "artillery tractor". Trevithick had a road locomotive called "Puffing Devil" in 1801 already. The first functioning steam locomotive was made by Trevithick in 1804 and it pulled mine carts with coal weighing 10 tons So what were locomotives powered by before 1829? Happy thoughts??

I'm building a model "Rocket" in 3.5" gauge live steam, (LBSC's "Rainhill") and my only complaint is that when I stop the video to look at the locomotive to determine the paint scheme, it goes all blurry and you cannot see actual details. The camera is focused in on a tiny part of the locomotive, and you cannot see how the moving parts actually work, because you cannot see what they are attached to at either end. It would be nice to have the camera pulled back another ten feet and be able to see everything. Also use a different camera where when you stop the video, it leaves a clear picture to examine for details. But Thank You for what IS there. Several other "ROCKET" videos literally DON'T have Rocket in the video at all. You can see an edge of it from time to time, but there are no actual frames with the entire "ROCKET" in view. You see the backs of people, and you see the trackside scenery, but only a hint that ROCKET was even used to haul all the people. You DID capture the experience of taking a ride on "ROCKET", though. The steam sounds, the chuffing, the clanking, and the sound of the wheels on the rail were wonderful!

Actually, Stephen is based off this locomotive. Stephenson's rocket was one of the first successful Steam Locomotives to exist.

According to accounts of the rainhill Trial the Rocket wasn't the best on show but because the other one broke down, do to parts made at Stephenson's factory, The Rocket won and with hindsight good job it did too as every steam train made afterwards can trace its roots back to the Rocket. People saying 'it wasn't the first steam engine' yes you're right but that wasn't what the trials were for, it was for pulling Passengers and the Rocket became the first inter city steam train and is worth celebrating that fact.

From my understanding of the trials, Sans Pareil (when they got it working) did indeed manage to pull a full load at around 16 mph which was comparable performance to Rocket, but apart from proving unreliable, SP was very fuel inefficient, and its vertical cylinders gave it a peculiar side-to-side rocking motion. It wasn't a bad loco for the time, but it was far less advanced than Rocket, which was easily the worthy winner.

@@ncs8730 that was helpful…… but the question is valid irrespective of whether the engine is a replica or the original… the answer is the same. Timber was used to clad the boilers to reduce heat loss to the air. I can not speak for the Rocket but in some cases charred timber was used for cladding as it was felt it was more impervious to rotting after getting wet.

Fast well yes and no, for its time it was one of the fastest means of transport but compared to steam trains from the 1900s they would be way way faster

And by law a light railway is limited to 25mph so even if they wanted to take it to 30mph they couldn't light railways would consist of this type of track and almost all preserved lines

This is true, but unfortunately, Mr Trevithicks invention wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Maybe ok for colliery work, but it was deemed by some to be slow, noisy, and ugly.

@@PortmanRd Perhaps, but the first Jet powered aircraft to fly (a Heinkel) in 1939 wasn’t seen as being particularly impressive with its top speed of 372mph. 20 years later the English Electric Lightning was flying at Mach 2. But the Heinkel was still first.

D-day air supieriority would have been severely threatened had Hitler realised the full potential of the Me262. Great numbers of them could have been in service as early as 1943. Imagine the havoc they could have caused amongst all pre- invasion bombing. A lot can happen in development in a year. I still can't believe Hitler downgraded it to a 2 seater bomber.

It's sad to see it running back and forth on a tiny track. A circuit would be much better.

Nope not by a long shot there others before this like locomotion , Rocket is the first modern steam locomotive in terms that it started the DNA of all steam locomotives after that having a multi tubed boiler and on a more depressing note was the first locomotive to run over someone it ran over the Liverpool MP William Husskison when he got out of the VIP train on the opening day of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. He got out his carriage which he was advised not to do, to go speak to the duke of wellington as he had a falling out with the duke, Rocket came the other way on the opposite line he panicked and then got hit by rocket

Sorry, you're simply misinformed. By the time Rocket was built, steam locomotives had been operating on British mining railways for around fifteen years, hauling long trains of coal wagons that were too heavy for horses to handle. Rocket was special because it was the first steam locomotive to prove itself fast enough and reliable enough to be used for *passenger* trains, and because it had design features that completely transformed how steam locomotives were built.

A common misconception. There were several working steam trains before Rocket. Rocket's claim to fame is that it won the Rainhill Trials in 1829.

mikego what about engines like Puffing Billy, which has survived to this day, built in the 1810s. Or the multiple other Stephenson locos, such as Blenkinsop and Locomotion, that predated this.
