The thing that bothered me most was that right after Hummel called the first time to state his demands the joint chiefs are immediately looking for a plan to neutralize him, including an incendiary air strike. At no point does anyone propose paying up or at the very least compensating the families of the dead soldiers (which was what Hummel was planning to do with the ransom anyway). They basically prove Hummel's point, that these guys don't care about the men and women they order into battle to die. If they offered to rectify the mistake, pay the families directly, and disclose the circumstances surrounding their deaths, that may have been enough to get Hummel to stand down.

Why should they care? They are FBI and military experts, their job is to tackle terrorists. Civilian lives are at stake, millions of them. It is not their job to make up for past governments' mistakes. Then and there Hummel poses a national security threat. And as for the fallen soldiers... they entered the military voluntarily, right? They knew what they signed up for, they knew what risks they took. A soldier might die on the battlefield and be forgotten.

3hutp Hummel was pissed because what happened to those soldiers wasn't supposed to in the first place. They were basically betrayed by their own government, they volunteered to serve with the promise that it would be for a worthy cause and that if they died their families would be looked after, they were owed that much for laying down their lives. At the start of the film Hummel said at his wife's grave that he tried everything else and "did not have their attention" meaning he tried to go through proper channels to correct the injustice but someone on the other end of the argument higher up than him made the conscious decision not to do so, hence why he resorted to this action. The tragedy is that after this ended with him and all his men getting killed by Cage and Connery, the government probably learned nothing, heck when the CO is briefing the F18 pilots on blowing up Alcatraz, he mentions that a number of American hostages and US Marines will be killed in their air strike like it's no big deal. That's the thing Hummel was unhappy with, that soldiers are nothing more than expendable pawns for armchair generals to throw away nonchalantly, I wouldn't be surprised if that seal team that got wiped out got disavowed too with no explanation given for their deaths and will be buried forgotten without honor in unmarked graves.

I feel Hummel should’ve gotten his wish granted. If the film had shown the government apologizing to the marines families and paying them along with the marines and seals that died on Alcatraz promising to learn from their mistakes, and admit that it was their fault those hostages were locked up and almost killed, and that they nearly got the whole city gassed and the hostages almost got blown up because of their arrogance then maybe I’d be satisfied.

I think its because it happens in a "institution" setting. As opposed to "work or a creative entreprise, the institution's sole purpose is to promote uniform "everything", clothing thinking protocols policies etc.. I mean look at the plandemic, everyone wants to act like no one made any mistakes but someone who can afford to see things humbly will come to a different conclusion. The institution cares for its image more than the people they serve; that is its major flaw in my eyes and I hope any organisation that isn't honest fails. (personal opinion of course) How is your week going? Take care.

My question is what their gameplan was if they did launch their bioweapon and succeeded. At that point their one bargaining chip preventing the US military from shoving a missile up their ass would be gone AND they'd become the most wanted people on Earth. As combat veterans, they have to know there is no possible safe haven for them anywhere.

I don't think Frye and Darrow were Force Recon Marines. The movie establishes early on that they never served under Hummel, and they're also frequently referred to as "soldiers" both by themselves and by Major Baxter (something Marines would never refer to themselves as). Based on this, I think they were either Army officers, or freelance mercenaries with an ex-Army past. The latter would also explain why they mutineered when it became clear that "there is no f*ckin' money".

Regardless if they use the Rockets to kill more people they're not going to have a chance to enjoy the money. The island will be surrounded unable for them to escape!

It's a good scene, but it's playing fast and lose with reality. Hummel if anyone would know that there wouldn't be any damn money due to hostage procedure 101, never pay the ransom, as well as the 1st rule in the counter terrorist handbook "we don't negotiate with terrorists" In my opinon the only way for Hummel to get the money would be to be serious, fire a missile from something like a stealth ship and tell them that you will fire one rocket every hour until the ransom has been paid.

I doubt that "good Marines" - captain Hendrix, privates Starling, Yates, Scarpetti and Gamble - would be pleased with Hummel's decision had all or some of them lived up to this moment. At least the officer and sergeant half of his men had definitely sacrificed their military careers by joining him, and all of the renegade Marines sacrificed their normal lives too. Only to find out that Hummel never intended to go through with his threats and fire the rockets. Frye and Darrow were completely right, the government would't have even arrested Hummel like he originally wanted, they just decided to bomb Alcatraz with thermal plasma as they predicted.

To be honest, even Hummel's closest friend and 2IC Major Baxter (David Morse) turned lunatics too, so it's safe to say the other marines under Hummel's command have turned to lunatics too. But that's bcoz Hummel told them to, he asked them to turn to the darkside with him and become bad people doing bad sh*t, and these guys bcoz of their loyalty to Hummel did it. This is the major flaw of Hummel. He should have explained properly to his men, that they were to bluff and not actually kill anyone or actually turn to the darkside.

It is established that Hummel is a genius combat commander. His mistake however is recruiting men who are outside his loyalty circle. For Hummel's loyal men, it was about the cause. For Darrow and Frye and their crew it was all about the money. I do not think they really cared about those other Marines who died under the various commands of Hummel. It was all about the payday and even if they did succeed in getting the money? I think Darrow and Frye would have double crossed Hummel at some point to keep all the money for themselves

  • @dars5229

Hummel's moral blind spot was that he was such a patriot galvanized by the deaths of fellow patriots under his command that he honestly believed other men who put on the same uniform are just like him. Like, SEAL Commander Anderson tells him he personally agrees with him and understands why he's doing what he's doing. But when the SEALs don't surrender, Hummel finds himself yelling "What the hell is wrong with you men?" He doesn't see who Frye and Darrow are until it's too late. Baxter does, and tries to make Hummel see it but too late. Damn, Shakespeare would have loved to live long enough to write action movies.

They take their "we don't negotiate with terrorists" too seriously. Another reason is probably their egos. They would rather let tens and hundreds of thousands of people die than to give away $100 million. They just proved Hummel's point that they don't care about people, they just want their benefits and willing to let people die. What Hummel did wasn't just a terrorist attack/threat or something, it's what the government rightfully and legally owes it to him and his fallen men and their families. And he's asking the money from an illegal arms dealing funds, meaning he's not taking money from the taxpayers' hard earned money (he still respects the taxpayers). If the President was smart, he'll just pay them the funds, and Hummel releases the hostages and ends the crises and his men can escape to safe destinations. Everybody get what they want, and nobody dies.

If that was all Hummel wanted, it could have easily been arranged. But he also wanted official acknowledgment of how his men died, and that wasn't happening. For example, he led troops into China. Sending armed soldiers into another country without a formal declaration of war is a war crime. A China is nuclear-armed. Official acknowledgment by the US government would mean China being free to retaliate any way they see fit.
