Despite destruction in many wars, it has retained its unmistakable character: In addition to the palace, the cathedral, the Zwinger and the Semper Opera House, the dome of the rebuilt Frauenkirche now adds new splendour to the city. The steel girder bridge was once a symbol of technical progress and a bone of contention - today it is a cherished monument.
UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Mankind" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” shows these places in impressive images.
